Annual EEO Public File Report 2015

The purpose of this EEO Public File Report ("Report") is to comply with Section
73.2080(c)(6) of the FCCs 2002 EEO Rule.
This Report has been prepared on behalf of the Employment Unit that is comprised of the
following stations: KION and KMUV and is required to be placed in the public inspection files
of these stations, and posted on their web sites (as applicable).
The information contained in this Report covers the time period beginning August 1, 2014 to
and including July 31, 2015 (the "Applicable Period").
The FCCs 2002 EEO Rule requires that this Report contain the following information:
1. A list of all full-time vacancies filled by the Station comprising the Station
Employment Unit during the Applicable Period;
2. For each such vacancy, the recruitment resource(s) utilized to fill the vacancy
(including, if applicable, organizations entitled to notification pursuant to Section
73.2080(c)(1)(ii) of the new EEO Rule, which should be separately identified),
identified by name, address, contact person and telephone number;
3. The recruitment source that referred the successful candidate for each full-time
vacancy during the Applicable Period;
4. Data reflecting the total number of persons interviewed for full-time vacancies
during the Applicable Period and the total number of interviewees referred by each
recruitment source utilized in connection with such vacancies: and
5. A list and brief description of the initiatives undertaken pursuant to Section
73.2080(c)(2) of the FCC rules.
Appendices 1, 2 and 3 which follow have been designed, in the aggregate, to provide the
required information. Please note that the numbers listed in Appendix 2 under the column
entitled "Full-time Positions for Which This Source Was Utilized" refer to the number of the
full-time job positions listed on Appendix 1.
For purposes of this Report, a vacancy was deemed "filled" not when the offer was extended
but when the successful candidate started the job. A person was deemed "interviewed"
whether he or she was interviewed in person, over the telephone or by e-mail.

Undertaken by KION and KMUV
Statement of EEO Policy
NPG of Monterey-Salinas, CA LLC believes in equal employment

recruitment, recruitment advertising, hiring, promotion, demotion, transfers,
reclassification, selection for training, compensation, benefits, companysponsored educational programs and any other aspect of employment.

1. Internship Programs:
KION/KMUV has always been involved in helping members of the
community achieve their educational goals. During this period, we provided
internships to Chapman University, CSU Sacramento, Syracuse
University, and UC Berkeley in the News Department. Student interns must
be enrolled in a class at their institution and must receive class credits for
their internship
KION/KMUV implemented a paid 12 week summer internship program
budgeting for one intern in the news department and one in sales. Paid
internships were provided to CSU Sacramento and UC Davis.

2. Description of Supplemental Outreach Initiatives 2014-2015

1) On August 30th Chief Meteorologist Dann Cianca and Morning Anchor Megan Munro
emceed at the City of Marinas Labor Day Parade. They were responsible for announcing
dignitaries, floats, and parade entrants and this popular local event. Dann and Megan
were able to interact with volunteers and spectators individually as well to explain what
types of broadcast careers are available and what sort of education is necessary.
2) News Channel 5 sponsored the Capital Insurance Group (CIG) Insurance Community
Safety Saturday on September 6th. It was held at their Corporate Headquarters where
they worked to help raise awareness about child, teen, and community safety in a fun,
educational atmosphere. Their goal is empowering people with the tools and
information needed to provide more safety and security for their loved ones. The KION
members helped create a safer and more secure community and while we were there
we were able to communicate to people what the broadcast industry is all about.
3) On September 13th, Chief Meteorologist Dann Cianca served as the Heart Walk emcee
for the Central Coast Heart and Stroke Walk at the Custom House Plaza in Monterey. He
kicked off the event and led the opening ceremony. There were 400 walkers and the
event helped raise thousands of dollars for research and education to help build lives
free of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Heart disease and stroke are the number one
and three causes of death in Monterey County so this was a key event for the
community. Dann also talked about being a meteorologist, the career and the
education behind it, as well as what opportunities there are in broadcast.
4) Reporter and weekend anchor Jake Reiner was on the Veterans Day Parade Committee
that helped barbeque and raise funds for their parade in the Oldtown Throwdown on
September 20th. He was one of six men chosen to participate in this event for the
community, one of them being the police chief of Salinas. While he ate, he chatted
with volunteers about jobs at KION and what types of careers there are in the industry.
5) On September 26th, Brooke Holmquist gave a tour of KION to Santa Cruz Cub Scout Pack
676. There were seventeen people on the tour who were shown the newsroom, the
sets, and production area. Brooke discussed the kind of jobs available in the field, the
schooling and skills necessary, and the stations internship program.
6) Reporter and producer Michelle Pulido, reporter and anchor Jake Reiner, and anchor
Jon Brent visited Fairview Middle School in Gonzales on October 1 st. Two students from
the middle school reached out to KION themselves, asking if reporters and anchors
could come in to answer questions in their journalism class.

7) On October 11th, anchor Spencer Washburn emceed the Make a Wish Greater Bay Area
event at the gala in Monterey. It helps support and raise money for children with
cancer. Spencer was able to spend some one-on-one time with people attending and
volunteers to discuss ways to be a part of the broadcast industry.
8) Anchor and producer Claudia Otero was the Mistress of Ceremony for the 19th annual
Dia de Los Muertos afternoon event at the Center for Community Advocacy on
November 2nd. It was held at the University Center at California State University
Monterey Bay (CSUMB). It recognizes leadership, courage, and volunteering in farm
work and honored many leaders in the community. Claudia talked with students about
an educational path in broadcast journalism.
9) Chief Meteorologist Norm Hoffmann was a member of the Salinas Veterans Day Parade
Committee on November 11th. The parade was held in Oldtown SalinAs and honored
past, present and future Veterans. This year was dedicated to those who served in the
Korean and Vietnam conflicts. The route began at Salinas High School and ended at the
corner of Gabilan and Main Street. Norm also talked about being a meteorologist, the
career and the education behind it, as well as what opportunities there are in broadcast.
10) On November 11th and November 14th, Brooke Holmquist led a tour of KION for Joshua
Carrs 1st grade class of the International School of Monterey. There were 28
participants each of the tours where Brooke showcased the newsroom, the sets, and
the production areas. They got an in depth look in the weather center as well. Brooke
talked about the skills and schooling necessary for the career and what kind of jobs are
available.
11) On November 19th, reporter and anchor Jake Reiner attended a Press Information
Officer training for the Carmel Police Department. Per request of the police
commanders, Jake took the 4 new officers through potential interview questions, the
information that is necessary for a good press release, and real life interview
scenarios. Jake was also able to give insight in to careers in news.
12) Chief Meteorologist Dann Cianca did a weather presentation at Panoche School in
Paicines with 8 total students ranging from Kindergarten to 6th grade. He talked about
schooling it would take to be a meteorologist or anchor or reporter. As well, as
explained other careers in the broadcast field.
13) Brooke Holmquist gave tour of KION to the Santa Cruz PRIDE (Personally Responsible
Individual in Ethics) group on November 21st. There were 10 middle and high school kids
and 4 adult chaperones. This program was created by the Santa Cruz Police Department
in conjunction with Santa Cruz City Schools. It is a multi-faceted approach to early gang

prevention for local intermediate school aged kids. The program is designed to educate,
mentor, and guide troubled youth in the decision-making process. KION has been a part
of the program by providing tours to enhance the education of the career paths for
people in this community and beyond. The students learned about each job in the
newsroom from the assignment desk, to directors to on-air talent. They spent an hour
not only learning but experiencing firsthand the jobs available in the news industry.
14) On November 21st and 22nd, anchor Spencer Washburn attended the Dominican
Hospital Holiday dEleganz on the first day and emceed the second day. Nearly one
thousand community, healthcare, and business leaders were at the event to help
benefit many programs and services for the Dominican Hospital. Spencer was able to
spend some one-on-one time with people attending and volunteers to discuss ways to
be a part of the broadcast industry.
15) From January 6-9, 2015, Chief Meteorologist Norm Hoffmann attended Operation Sierra
Storm, a weather conference in South Lake Tahoe, CA. At the conference Norm not only
received the most up-to-date weather studies from the researchers themselves
(including topics such as climate change, water supply and oceanography,) but he was
also able to bring that knowledge to the Central Coast community by doing live shots at
the conference. Additionally, he was available to talk to and mentor student entering
the meteorology field.
16) On January 21, 2015 Hollister Pack 444 Boy Scouts were given a tour of the studio by
Brooke Holmquist. The group came for the 6pm newscast, got a full tour of the station
including newsroom, studio, and production control room. They were able to watch the
newscast live and talk to the anchors. Additionally, they took part in a special interactive
session with Dann Cianca in the weather center. Brooke discussed the kind of jobs
available in the field, the schooling and skills necessary, and the stations internship
program.
17) Also on January 21, 2015 the Youth Group Monterey 1st Ward, Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-Day Saints was given a tour of the station. There were 22 kids and 6 adults on the
tour. The group came for the 6pm newscast, got full tour of the station including
newsroom, studio, and production control. They were able to watch the newscast live
and talk with the anchors as well as a special interactive session with Dann Cianca in the
weather center. The kids learned what kind of jobs available in the field, the schooling
and skills necessary, and the stations internship program.

18) On January 27, 2015 Brooke Holmquist attended the Watsonville High School Video
Academy as one of the mentors. Each mentor was matched with two or three students.
Brooke has communicated with them a multiple times a month asking how their school
year is going and trying to encourage them to be focused on what they are planning to
do after high school and what sort of things they need to do to be successful in
broadcast journalism.
19) Reporter and anchor Jake Reiner attended iHeartMedias St. Jude Radiothon on
February 20, 2015 and worked in the phone bank, answering calls and taking donations.
The event was very successful and booked $52K this year, 18% more than in 2014.
20) On March 3, 2015 reporter and producer Erika Mahoney attended the Read Across
America program at Boronda Meadows Elementary School in Salinas. She read to a 5 th
class and answered questions after she finished reading her favorite book. Erika was
about to talk with the children about the kind of jobs available in the field, the schooling
and skills necessary, and the stations internship program.
21) Also on March 3, 2015 reporter Michelle Pulido had a job shadow with Alexis Casas. She
talked about the kinds of jobs available in news-press, talked about schooling and skills
needed for employment and discussed the stations internship program. Alexis is an 18year-old freshman community college student at Hartnell College in Salinas and
previously attended North Monterey County High School. Alexis spent the day with
Michelle learning some producing skills as well as going out in the field to see how
reporters shoot video, conduct interviews, then write and edit a story. Alexis said she
appreciated the hands-on experience and real world insight into the news business.
22) On March 4, 2015 reporter Michelle Pulido attended Boronda Meadows Elementary
School in Salinas for their Read Across America program. She read to Andrea Toccis
fourth grade classroom. This was her second time in the classroom; they liked her so
much she was asked back. Michelle was about to talk with the children about the kind
of jobs available in the field, the schooling and skills necessary, and the stations
internship program.
23) Anchor Jon Brent attended the New Republic School in Salinas on March 5, 2015 for
their Read Across America program. He read the book StellaLuna to elementary aged
students. The event was attended by hundreds of students and their families from 5
different schools in the district. Jon was about to talk with the children about the kind
of jobs available in the field, the schooling and skills necessary, and the stations
internship program.

24) Reporter and anchor Jake Reiner attended Harden Middle School on March 11, 2015. He
was invited to be a guest speaker for their career day. He spoke about his experience,
KION, his career as a journalist, and the education needed to be in the field. Jake even
took the kids through a mock interview process.
25) On March 12, 2015 Brooke Holmquist gave a tour to the Youth Group Monterey 2 nd
Ward, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. There were 16 kids and 5 adults
on the tour. The group came for the 6pm newscast, got a full tour of the station
including newsroom, studio, and production control. They got to watch the newscast
live and talk with the anchors as well as a special interactive session with Dann in the
weather center. Brooke discussed the kind of jobs available in the field, the schooling
and skills necessary, and the stations internship program.
26) On March 12 and 21, 2015 reporter Michelle Pulido was a judge at the Monterey
Countys Office of Education Migrant Education Program for the speech and debate
tournament. Michelle attended a training session first and then was a judge at the event
at Salinas High School. The Migrant Education Speech and Debate Tournaments provide
students with the opportunity to grow academically, linguistically and socially.
27) On March 23, 2015 Kristy Santiago met with Paul Farmer, CEO and Chief Member
Advocate of the Salinas Valley Chamber of Commerce. 27 students in their leadership
development program were filmed by a camera person as they gave a short elevator
pitch, being able to practice being on camera. KION then put together a DVD of the
recordings and sent it to them.
28) Chief Meteorologist Dann Cianca and morning show anchor Megan Munro attended
the Boys and Girls Club of Monterey County on March 28, 2015. The two emceed the
22nd Annual Comics for Kids Gala.

29) On March 30, 2015 Soledad Cub Scouts 365 got a tour of the station. There were 30
people on the tour. The group came for the 6pm newscast, got a full tour of the
newsroom, studio, and production control. Got to watch the newcast live and talk with
the anchors as well as a special interactive session in the weather center with Dann
Cianca. Brooke discussed the kind of jobs available in the field, the schooling and skills
necessary, and the stations internship program.
30) On April 2, 2015 Charles Bell and Matt Mehle, meteorologists with the National
Weather Service were given a tour of the station and weather center with Dann Cianca.
It is very important to us as a station to work closely with the NWS and have an active

working relationship with them. This is a regular tour with new and ever changing
meteorologists as the local weather service location.
31) On April 8, 2015 anchor Amanda Gomez went to the Salinas Steinbeck Rotary Club
meeting as their guest speaker and spoke for nearly an hour beginning at 8:00am. She
discussed her journey in the news business, some little known facts and behind the
scenes trivia, and explained the NewsChannel5 brand. She talked about the passion for
community outreach in covering the stories that really matter to the viewer, not just
what we get on a scanner or in a news release. Meaning, getting the community to
interact with us and telling us what is impacting them both positively and negatively
locally.
32) On April 10, 2015 anchors Spencer Washburn and Amanda Gomez emceed the
American Cancer Societys Celebration of Life Fashion show at the Hyatt Regency in
Monterey. The models were all cancer survivors in our communitymen, women, and
children. It is an important and touching event in the community. Spencer and Amanda
were able to spend some one-on-one time with people attending and volunteers to
discuss ways to be a part of the broadcast industry.

33) On April 15, 2015 Brooke Holmquist gave the Young Farmers and Ranchers Group from
Salinas a tour of the newsroom, studio, and production center. There were 20
participants in the tour. Brooke discussed the kind of jobs available in the field, the
schooling and skills necessary, and the stations internship program.
34) On April 20, 2015 reporter and anchor Jake Reiner gave Troop 43 Cub Scouts from
Monterey and Carmel a tour of the newsroom. He discussed the kind of jobs available,
the schooling and skills needed for employment, as well as the stations internship
program.
35) Chief Meteorologist Dann Cianca and meteorologist Jason Atcho emceed the Walk With
Me event in Salinas Valley hosted by the Easter Seals Central California organization on
April 25, 2015. It was held in Sherwood Park.

36) On April 30, 2015 anchor Amanda Gomez attended the 10th Annual Womens Fund
Luncheon of the Community Foundation for Monterey County. She participated in the
networking part of the program. She spoke one-on-one with women who are influential
in the community. The Womens Fund invests locally in women and girls to create a
better future for us all. The 10th Annual Luncheon celebrated the successes of the

Womens Fund and shared their vision for the future. Amanda spoke with women
individually about career opportunities in the news field.
37) Reporter Michelle Pulido and anchors Spencer Washburn and Amanda Gomez attended
the Boys and Girls Club of Monterey County on Friday May 8, 2015. The Boys and Girls
Club was hosting a career expo for over 300 teenagers. They each spoke about their
career paths in the media industry and answered questions from the students.
38) Chief Meteorologist Dann Cianca attended Ladd Lane Elementary School in Hollister in
Jamie Fowles 5th grade class on Monday May 11, 2015. She wanted a weather person to
do a presentation to her students before they took the states 5 th grade science test.
39) Also on Monday May 11, 2015 Pack 230 from the Silicon Valley Council were given a
tour of the station. Most of the kids are from John Steinbeck Elementary in the
Creekbridge area. There were 10-15 kids and 5 parents on the tour. The kids focused on
a specific lesson while taking the tour- why it is easier to communicate to mass amounts
of people through TV and how local government gets the word out working with TV
stations.
40) On Wednesday May 13, 2015 Brooke Holmquist gave Carmel Valley Troop 127 of Boy
Scout Cubs a tour of the newsroom. There were 6 kids and 6 parents on the tour. She
discussed the skills and education needed for news jobs as well as KIONs internship
program.
41) Brooke Holmquist have a tour of the station to a 5th grade class from Robert H. Down
Elementary school in Pacific Grove. There were 25 kids on the May 14th tour.
42) On Friday May 15, 2015 Chief Meteorologist Dann Cianca attended Calaveras
Elementary school in Hollister. He spoke in Debi Lewis 5th grade class of about 60 kids (2
classes in total) and showed a PowerPoint presentation about being a meteorologist.
43) On May 16, 2015 anchor Spencer Washburn emceed the Relay for Life event on the
Monterey Peninsula. Relay for Life is the American Cancer Societys top annual
fundraiser. Its an organized, overnight fundraising walk that features food, games,
music, and activities for the whole family. It was held at the Monterey Fairground. He
was a part of the opening ceremony and spoke about being a part of the KION team and
his personal connection to cancer. He introduced the mayor and took part in the walk.
Spencer talked about the role the broadcast industry plays in the community and how
people can be a part of that.

44) On Wednesday May 20, 2015 Brooke Holmquist gave a tour to 4 kids and 4 parents of
the Cub Scout Pack 286 out of Prunedale. She gave them a full tour of the newsroom,
studio, and production center and discussed what education and skills are needed for
news jobs as well as the stations internship program.
45) Reporter Michelle Pulido appeared at the Dream Academys fundraiser at the Salinas
Sports Complex on May 31, 2015. The fundraiser was a Spanish language concert.
Michelle volunteered to work with the kids and helped organize and run the event the
day of.
46) Anchor Jon Brent attended ASPIRA Nets Cherish Food Fight event on June 14, 2015. It
was held at the Portola Hotel in Monterey. The event is to aid foster children and
halfway homes on the Central Coast. Jon emceed the event for his second time (the first
was in December 2013.) The event was a culinary challenge featuring junior chefs and
chef mentors.
47) Reporter Michelle Pulido participated in a Skype interview on June 18, 2015 with
student interns with the Engaged Latina Leadership Activists organization. Michelle was
recorded answering a series of 10 questions pertaining to Latino/as in the media given
her role as a reporter and fill-in anchor for Telemundo. The edited PSA will be
presented to city/county leaders.
48) On June 29, 2015 at 10:30am a group of special education students and their
chaperones and teachers from North Salinas High School toured the station. Brooke
Holmquist led the tour and although there was not a newscast happening at the time of
the tour, the students were able to see the studio, the set, the teleprompter, and the
control room technology.
35) On July 8, 2015, Brooke Holmquist went to be a presenter for the non-profit, Girls, Inc.
It holds summer camp sessions and one was on Media Smarts -- I told the girls about the
news, what it is like to be an anchor, a reporter, showed them our camera gear. Show them
clips from the newscasts, then we grouped them up and they had to deliver a short news story
as anchors, reporters, and interviewees.

3. Job Fair Participation:

KION and KMUV participated in two job fairs. The first job fair was on April 6, 2015. This
was the Community Job Fair in Monterey, CA. The second fair attended was at Hartnell
College, the Spring 2015 Job Fair on April 28, 2015.

4. Employee participation in community events and

nonprofits.
General Manager, Kristy Santiago, is a member of the Board of Directors of the Boys and
Girls Club of Monterey. Brooke Holmquist sits on the board of the Aptos Sports Foundation
and Robert Martinez is a board member of Shelter Outreach Plus. Lori Sarmiento is on the
YMCAs board, Josef Kachman is a member of the Pajaro Valley Chamber of Commerce
Board and Kirk Hamrick volunteers at the Hollister Air Show and is on the board of the San
Benito Olive Festival.

5. EEO Dept. Head Meeting.

General Manager, Kristy Santiago met with the Department Heads to discuss recent
cases finding inadequate EEO vacancy recruitment practices and the need to continue to
pay close attention to the stations recruitment practices and other EEO obligations to
ensure compliance with the FCCs EEO rules.
