You can also mix both terms, but its not usual to say: Schne Weihnachten und ein schnes
neues Jahr (= to many times "schne").
I prefer "Schne Weihnachten und Prosit Neujahr"
Most people in Germany actually wish "Frhliche Weihnachten und ein gutes neues Jahr". It is
very popular to say "Frhliche Weihnachten und einen guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr", too.
Frohliche Weihnachten is the way it's said in proper German. Frohe Weinachten is a bit less formal and you'd
use it with friends and people you know well.
Frohliche Weinachten would be seen on Christmas cards, it's the way you'd say it to strangers, your parents,
grandparents, etc. They mean the same thing however.
Frohe Weihnachten is more commonly used, and yes it's slightly more formal.
