We hope you enjoy this bumper August/September issue and it inspires you to take
part in the wealth of great stuff going on in Bedford.
The beach is coming to Bedford at the beginning of August, there are loads of activities
at the Higgins and the Love Bedford Summer Trail is now in full swing. If you prefer
something more sedate take in some jazz, cruise the Ouse or pitch up for the pop up cinema.
This months cover illustrator is Katie Allen, whose work you will have seen in previous
issues. Katie has recently taken the step to leave her teaching job tobecome a full-time
freelance artist, so feel free to contact her if you are interested in commissioning work or
would like to buy one of her prints. www.katieallen-illustration.com

BEDFORD
FILM FESTIVAL
TH E
C L A NG E R
RE
I feel like my eyes are going to fall out, co-Founding Director of Bedford
Film Festival, Paul Hutchinson, tells us as he completes watching his share of
the 1,300 short films that have been submitted from across the world for their
2015 Shorts Session. We opened up local submission for the 2014 festival and
this year thought wed invite overseas film makers, just to test the water and
see what happened. We expected a trickle and got a tsunami.
In many ways this is a perfect metaphor for how Bedford Film Festival has
grown in a little over two years. Paul Hutchinson, Richard Jobson and Stephen
Judge have created Bedfords go-to cinema organisation for Bedford, and not just
for the films they screen themselves. They also give help and assistance to venues
that want to screen their own films, and filmmakers looking to find a vehicle for
their work.
I remember the day we sat outside The Higgins Pantry and discussed what
wed do for our first year. explains Paul, I never imagined that when it came to
organising our third festival wed be receiving short films from all over the world,
have venues across the town queuing up to be a part of our event, and respected
industry organisations wanting to work with us.
Bedford Film Festival is certainly putting Bedford on the map and is getting
some impressive attention. Into Film, a BFI funded organisation set up to help
promote education through film, has helped the workshops organised with Bedford
College evolve into a two-day long event, and interest from afar is still coming:
Ive just got off the phone from BAFTA. Paul adds: Yeah, BAFTA! Theyve
noticed what were doing and have got in touch to discuss some ideas for working
together. I cant tell you anything more just yet but were keen to see where this
goes, and ultimately how it can benefit Bedford as a town.
And therein lies the reason why Bedford Film Festival does so well. Its
committed to what works for Bedford and its communities. They have loads of
ideas but only put forward those that they know will benefit the town as a whole.
Thats why they attract support from the likes of: The Higgins, The Pad, The
Quarry Theatre, Bedfringe, Advancing People, Future Legend Media, Advancing
Property, Bonfire CI, SEMLEP, SDG, Roosters, Pavilion in the Park, Design
Twenty, The Smallprint, The Clanger, Charles Wells, and Bedford Borough
Council, who all consistently believe in Bedford Film Festival.
Paul knows its that support and collaboration that has enabled them to achieve
what they have: We couldnt have done any of this without our sponsors. They
have all seen what were doing and trusted in us. Weve returned that trust by
delivering a consistently high quality event that brings positive attention to our
town. Each and every one of our sponsors, volunteers, collaborators, and audience
members should be proud of what theyve helped us achieve. Each and everyone
one of them is a Bedford Film Festival BFF.
Bedford Film Festival opens three days of pre-releases, foreign and
indie cinema on 11 September at The Quarry Theatre, followed by fringe
screenings at multiple venues throughout the month, a Childrens Film
Festival at The Higgins Museum and Gallery on 26th September, and a
two-day filmmaking workshop at Bedford College on 13-14th October.

PLAY
THE
It has been many years since a full scale open air Passion Play was last seen in
Bedford but plans are well underway for one to take place at Easter 2016. The story
of Jesus trials, crucifixion and resurrection will be staged around Bedford town
centre and the search is on for local people to be a part of it
In July, the final of the Shed of the Year competition was screened on Channel 4. The
show, hosted by George Clarke and ably assisted by Bedforshires very own Max
McMurdo, celebrates the very best and most unique sheds in the UK. This year, one
of the finalists was Bedfords Luke Wesley with his Cabin of the Green Man
Q1: How long have you been wood carving with chainsaws?
How did you discover your talent?
Q2: What made you enter the Shed of the Year competition?
While I was building the Cabin of the Green Man I put some pictures on
social media and people were interested and started commenting, I had been
inspired by watching last years competition. I just thought despite not
being the competition type that Id just enter and see what happened. I had
a couple of replies to say that I had been accepted into the competition and
it went from there. The whole shed is made from recycled wood stuff that
was being thrown away
Q3: How impressed were you with the calibre of the other sheds?
Amazing! Alban who won the lifetime achievement award is such an
inspiration. Were planning to go and stay with him and I cant wait to show
my kids the stuff that hes made.
Q6: What do you think makes the perfect shed? Does it have to
be practical or can it be frivolous?
For me a shed has to be made of timber, its got to smell like a shed, its
got to have felt on the roof and those functional hangy-screws that you can
suspend a spade from! As long as you fulfil all those criteria you can do
what you like with it after that.

TWINWOOD FESTIVAL
Twinwood is a unique, retro affair with a huge reputation. It is a three day festival celebrating all things
vintage - at the historic Twinwoods Airfield near Clapham, just north of Bedford. Set on the site of a WW2
airfield where Glenn Miller made his well-documented and fateful journey for Paris, the site has a festival
heritage as well, it briefly held a rhythm & blues festival, which was even used as a filming location for TVs
Midsomer Murders starring John Nettles!
Now, the internationally renowned Twinwood Festival hosts numerous stages and arenas showcasing music and
entertainment from the 20s through to the 60s. The whole gamut of musical genres is catered for, from war time
swing to northern soul! This years acts include Anita Harris, Hotsie Totsies, Gypfunk and John Miller (Glenns
nephew) & his orchestra
Its not just about the music. Vintage lovers will find everything from pop up hair salons to cars, vintage
boutiques and of course, the Glenn Miller Museum.

Herd arguably fills the gap in Bedfords gourmet burger market during the day
whilst offering a separate chic bar area at night (open until 1 a.m. on Fridays
and Saturdays). The interior is modern with a minimalist industrial feel that
somehow doesnt detract from its cosiness. Think rustic wooden benches,
artfully draped wires suspended from the ceiling, exposed light bulbs and
Lichtenstein prints lining the walls. Aesthetic-wise, Herd is Bedfords answer to
the trendy eateries-cum-bars found in the capital.
Reassuringly, there are only seven burger options on the menu confirming
that everything is meticulously prepared fresh on the day, yet the pricing is
still reasonable.
Upon talking to the owner, Matt (ex-employee at Pizza Express and now
living out his dream) we learnt that all of the beef used is indeed sourced from
a local provider that also supplies Waitrose with their meat. We opted for the
Classic Burger and Veggie Burger respectively, in order to cater for the meateaters and vegetarians alike within The Clangers readership, with the former
arriving resplendent: succulent beef slathered in a homemade bacon ketchup.
The latter boasted enough wholesome seeds and halloumi to satisfy even the
most critical omnivore - a triumph in comparison to other niche burger restaurants that try to pass off a soggy portabello mushroom sandwiched in between a
bun as a veggie burger (ahem, Byron). Each burger also came with a generous
helping of hand cut skin on rosemary and garlic fries delicious!
AND OVER
IN THE BAR
There is plenty of craft beer talk about at the moment, so when Matt
Wolton, the founder of Herd, asked me to help put his beer range together
it was a real chance to do something different from your average Bedford
pub or bar. Ysee Herd isnt just about the burger. The American craft
brewers are making some superb beer right now so weve brought in a few
beauties for you to have a tilt at. Theres a couple from California based
Anchor Brewing to sit alongside the well respected and highly hopped US
craft classic Sierra Nevada. Theres also a wonderful craft lager from Goose
Island plus a belting IPA from Scottish brewer Brewdog (even a gluten free
version). There are European brands too such as Amstel and Duvel, Asian
brews such as Singha and Tiger and theres a quality taste of home with
Black Sheep Ale. But if you dont know your IPA from your single hop
fear not. At the end of the day, theres a range here thats got something
everybody so get yourself down for a crafty beer when you can.

STREET
The newest kids on the St Cuthberts block are GCH
Fishmongers, and if the reaction on social media
is anything to go by, their arrival is very eagerly
anticipated. Father and son owners, Gary and George
Hooper, are infectiously passionate about fresh fish.
Ive been in the business for 35 year, said Gary
when we spoke to him a week before the launch. My
background is supermarkets. I was retail ops director
at Safeway and ran my own consultancy working
with Sainsburys and M&S to advise and train their
fishmongers. In 2003 I joined the National Federation of
Fishmongers and in 2010 I was the first fishmonger with
a supermarket background to be voted as president.
Talking to Gary it is clear that he is as passionate about
Bedford as he is about fish. I worked on my mates stall
at Billingsgate for years, but always wanted to open a
shop in my hometown. The reaction from Bedfordians
has been really encouraging and were looking
forward to getting started. GCH are going to offer
regular deliveries and will adapt their opening hours to
accommodate the needs of their customers.

BOUTIQUE PLANET
THE ARCADE, BEDFORD / BOUTIQUEPLANET.CO.UK
With the mercury rising, we thought it was about time we got the lowdown on this
seasons fashion must-haves from Nick, Jo and Kath at Boutique Planet.
Bedford Clanger: Summers here! What are the key trends for this season?
Boutique Planet: It is, finally! Dont be afraid of print this summer. Be it on a dress or
trousers. Also, everyone should own a kimono! Wear it either with jeans for a casual look or
on the beach as an on trend cover up.
BC: Do you have any new brands this summer?
BP: Yes, we have taken on French Connection. Style and quality for those seeking a luxury treat.
BC: Your childrens wear is adorable! What are the brands that you stock? What are your
best sellers?
BP: We have Petit Bateau, Bumble Bee and The Loop Factory. Bumble Bee for dresses and
rompers. The Loop Factory for hats and booties. Both are handmade locally and are adorable.
BC: What are your key pieces for music lovers heading to festivals this summer?
BP: We have a great mix of lightweight dresses which are great for if you need to streamline
you packing. Also we have a beautiful and versatile kimono in a pretty floral print from Vila.
BC: Why do you think its so important for Bedford to maintain its mix of big brands and
indie retailers?
BP: Bedford must maintain its great mix otherwise we will soon become like every other
ailing town in the country. We have a wonderful town with plenty of shops to visit, great
places to eat and theatre productions to watch if we chose to seek them out before leaving to
the surrounding towns and cities. It is this unique mix that means Bedfords housing market is
buoyant our education offering excellent and is why people are moving here from the city.
BC: PS: we LOVE your blog!
BP: Thanks, its written by the amazing Kath Law who is the latest addition to the Boutique
Planet family. Well let her know youre fans!

On Bedford High Street towards the town bridge between River
Coffee and Nandos a rectangular plaque marks the birthplace of
William Hale White (Mark Rutherford) on 22nd December 1831.
Hale White wrote to a lifelong friend for some reason I dislike
Bedford. My fathers shade meets me at every corner when I go
there. But later, when writing a biography of John Bunyan he wrote
Elstow and the Ouse and in a measure the temper of the man are in
my blood and his Early life of Mark Rutherford paints a more truthful story of his love of the river, boating and fishing and the town of
his birth.
Hale White, as he was known to distinguish him from his father,
William White, attended Bedford Modern School and worshipped at
Bunyan Meeting where his father ran the Sunday school. His father
was a bookseller who held radical and outspoken views. Business
suffered as a result. He eventually moved to London becoming
Doorkeeper at the House of Commons and wrote parliamentary
sketches for the press which was published as The Inner Life of the
House of Commons.
Hale White left Bedford and went to Cheshunt College to train
for the ministry then moved to New College in London. With two
friends he was expelled for holding unorthodox views prompting his
father to write a defence of his son called To think or not to think.
After unsuccessfully trying teaching Hale became a civil servant.
He married and had four children but his wife had multiple sclerosis
and died in 1891. The Hale White family lived in Carshalton but
when his wife died and children left home moved around, living in
Hastings with his daughter Mollie for a while eventually moving to
Groombridge, East Sussex. In 1911 Hale married again to Dorothy
Vernon Smith, a young novelist 46 years his junior. He died in 1913
and is buried in the village churchyard.
The fictional life story in the Autobiography and the Deliverance
as well as the latter part of The Revolution in Tanners Lane show
a picture of dissenting life in Bedford. His other novels, Catherine
Furze and Miriams Schooling are set in Bedford-like towns. He
wrote especially well about young, independently minded women.
His last, Clara Hopgood caused some controversy prompting him to
deny his having written the books published under the name Mark
Rutherford.
Hales youngest son said, From 10.00 a.m. till 4. p.m. he worked
at the Admiralty and that work he liked, and then he went, once a
week or so, to the House (of Commons) and heard what was going
on and then home to write his newspaper articles, then to bed and up
again at 4 a.m. to work on his books. At 6.30 I got him the papers
and he breakfasted and finished his newspaper articles. Ive often
seen him in the waiting room at Victoria Station writing and writing
always an article to be finished.
For more information check out the Mark Rutherford Resource:
davidfrench.org.uk/markrutherford/ there is a road, a school and the
sixth form building at Bedford Modern School is named after him.
The Mark Rutherford Collection is in Bedford Central Library. The
novels are available for loan from there and are free on Kindle. The
most recent book about him is Michael Brealey, Bedfords Victorian
Pilgrim. 2012.

In the early 1960s, Joan Littlewood and architect Cedric Price conceived
the Fun Palace as a laboratory of fun and a university of the streets.
It was to be a temporary and movable home to the arts and sciences,
open and welcoming to all. For all sorts of reasons, it wasnt possible in
1961 and the Fun Palace never came to fruition as a building. The idea
however, of a space welcoming and open to all, bringing arts and sciences
together, where everyone is an artist and everyone a scientist, remained a
GREAT idea.
On 4 & 5 October 2014 there were 138 local, temporary Fun
Palaces across the UK and beyond, made by local people for their own
communities, bringing together arts and sciences, free and fun, linked by
the digital Fun Palace website Everyone an Artist, Everyone a Scientist.
There will be many more including Bedford joining in 2015.
Theres a story that when Joan Littlewood asked the kids of Stratford
East what they wanted in her prototype Fun Palace, the Stratford Easter
Fair in 1975, the kids said Donkey rides! She replied, Yes, and how
do we get the donkey here? We think theres nothing more radical than
saying Yes and and then doing it.
This year, Bedford has said, yes and now we need your help to do it!

The BedPop Fun Palaces will be taking place in five different venues
throughout the town. Were taking over the whole of the Higgins for
the weekend, will be at Animal Gallery, The Quarry Theatre at St
Lukes, in the Library, in Harpur Square and anywhere else we can
wriggle our way in.
Were still hatching our plans and talking to collaborators, but we can
guarantee that the BedPop Fun Palaces are going to blow your mind with
loads of amazing FREE events taking place in venues and spaces all over
town. If you like art or science or both you are going to LOVE the
BedPop Fun Palaces.
Scientists, artists, teachers, designers, students, crafters, makers, dancers,
architects, coders, photographers, actors, performers, brewers, musicians,
jugglers, chemists, illustrators, engineers. We want you!
Anyone can take part in the BedPop Fun Palace, so please get in touch

We will also need lots of volunteers to ensure all our events run smoothly.
Wed love to hear from you, so if youd like to get in contact, please email
