(b) Write down Johnsons straight line and parabolic formulae for columns
(c) Derive an expression for the maximum stress induced in long column

[2]
[10]

02

(a) Explain the failure of long columns and short columns.

(b) Explain the term slenderness ratio and describe with mathematical
expression, how it limits the use of Eulers formula for critical load.

[4]
[4]

(c) The external and internal diameters of hollow cast iron column are 5 cm
and 4 cm respectively. If the length of this column is 3 m and both of its
ends are fixed. Determine the crippling load by using Rankines formula.
(Take the values of c = 550 N / mm2 and a = 1/ 1600)

[8]

03

(a) Determine the shape factors of rectangle and circular sections.

(b) Describe creep and discuss effect of strain hardening on creep behavior of
materials with help of creep curve.

[8]
[8]

04

(a) Determine the maximum allowable internal pressure to which a cylinder

with an internal diameter 10 cm and external diameter 20 cm may be
subjected, if a cylinder is to have F.S = 3. Use maximum shear stress theory
of failure, the yield point stress determined by actual test for the material is
y,p = 3000 kg / cm2 . What will be the internal pressure, if the maximum
principal stress theory is used?
(b) A solid disc of radius 15 cm is rotating at a speed of 2500 rpm. Determine
the radial and hoop stresses in the disc. Assume = 0.3, = 8000 kg / cm 3.
If a hole of 2 cm radius is bored at the centre of disc then determine the
stresses in the disc.

[8]

Derive an expression of bending stresses induced in the curved beam with

large initial curvature subject to bending moments at its ends.

[16]

05.

[8]

Contd on P/-2

(-2-)

06.

Define residual stress. A rigid block weighing P lbs is supported by three

bars (two aluminum bars and one steel bar).
For aluminum bars: yield stress = 48,000 psi, length = 14 in, area = 1 in 2,
Modulus of elasticity = 10106 psi.
For steel bar: yield stress = 42,000 psi, length = 10 in, area = 1.5 in 2,
Modulus of elasticity = 30106 psi.
If P is the limit load, determine the residual stresses after P is removed
Assumption: The material is elastic-plastic.

[16]

07

(a) Define the following terms:

(i) Stress tensor
(ii) Unsymmetrical bending (iii) plastic deformation
(iv) stress concentration
(b) The stress components at a points are x = 22, y = 12, z = 7, xy = 12,
yz = 6 and xz = 7 MPa. Determine the normal and shearing stresses on the
plane whose direction cosines are 1/ 3, 1/ 3, 1/ 3. Also calculate the
direction of the shear stress.

[8]

(a) Describe the following theories of failure along with its graphical
representations:
(i) Max. shearing stress theory (ii) Maximum normal stress theory

[8]

08

(b)

Write short notes any two (02) of the following:

(i)
Castiglianos theorem associated with energy method
(ii)

Rankines formula for column.

(iii)

Thick walled cylinders

(iv)

Photo elastic analysis
