INTRODUCTION
The method is based on measuring the attenuation of light beam in a cell filled with the measured
smoke.
Both steady-state and acceleration measurements are possible.
The acceleration test (obligatory during the emission inspection) registers the idle and over speed
revolutions, acceleration time and peak opacity.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
The apparatus meets requirements for operation according to the EN 61010-1.
The LCS 2004 must always be connected to the network voltage, supplied by separable feeding

Removing covers from the apparatus is not allowed, there is danger of injury caused by electric
current.
For emission control working sites and for service working sites, relevant safety regulations are
applied. In that spirit, the operator must organise training course for service staff of the measuring
apparatus. From the point of view of measuring provided on the car, those acts are usual service
actions, which are, however, executed at run.
Therefore, safety precautions must be kept according to the manufacturers of the car and of the
engine that are valid for testing the engine during its run. Sufficient suction must be ensured of
escaping exhaustion gases, and outlet of outleting gases from the analyser, out of the measuring
working site, too.

The device should be protected against ambient water in any form (rain, sprayed water, etc.)
WASTE DISPOSAL
A NOTE ABOUT RECYCLING:
This product's packaging materials are recyclable and can be reused. Please dispose of
any materials in accordance with the local recycling regulations.
When discarding the unit, comply with local roles or regulations.
Batteries should never be thrown away or incinerated but disposed of in accordance with
the local regulations concerning chemical waste.
This product and the accessories packed together constitute the applicable product
according to the WEEE directive except batteries.
4.
DESCRIPTION OF APPARATUS
Opacimeter is composed of personal computer (PC or Laptop not included in the set) used for displaying of
measured values and communication with operator, and of the LCS 2400 sampling unit used for taking and
processing of samples from oil engines exhaust gas.
The instruments mechanical design is described in Chap. I - 4.2.1.

The sampling unit is an integral part of the Opacimeter. It is connected to the PC via interconnecting cables,
which are 7 meters long (connectors K1).
4.2
CONSTRUCTION OF APPARATUS
4.2.1
MECHANICAL PART
Coating of the sampling unit is made out of black matted plastic. Electronics of the sampling unit is situated in
the sheet shading cover. Sampling probes are made of flexible stainless hose, provided with protective braiding.
Prolonging hoses of probes are made of silicone rubber, resistant against crude oil products and increased
temperature.
The stand for LCS 2400 is made of steel material and is sprayed with acrylate two-component paint.
4.2.2
ELECTRONIC PART
Inside electronic system and all clamps, connectors and sensors accessible from outside are galvanically
separated from the network, and there is voltage on them not exceeding the safety voltage.
The sampling unit is fitted with electronic control of opacimeter optical system. Communication with the PC goes
through serial line RS 232C.
Sampling units electronics is placed on two printed wiring boards, namely the microprocessor, memory &
decoder board and board of alternating voltage distribution. Alternating voltage 230 V feeds both two built-in
fans and heating system of measuring cell and detector.
4.2.3
PNEUMATIC PART
Pneumatic part the Opacimeter is placed in the sampling unit and is represented on the Fig. 2. Basis of the
sampling unit is measuring cell (1), light source and detector block (2), with support of which the opacity
measuring itself is processed. Mirror (3) serves for the reflection of the light, which is sent from the light source.
Fans (4) direct the direction of smoke, so that no contamination of optic system occurs. Heating coil (spiral) (5)
serves for the measuring cell warming up.

MEASURING PRINCIPLE
The Opacimeters smokiness measuring method is in accordance with ECE R24 directives for measuring by
free acceleration method.
Principle of opacimeter measuring consists in measuring of amount of light passing through a sample of an
exhaust gas. Absence of smoke in the measuring cell means zero opacity (optical density). Complete shading of
the measuring cell (non-transparent gas) means 100 % opacity. As shown on Fig. 3, exhaust gas is led by
sampling probe (6) to the measuring cell (1) with 364 mm effective length. Smoke column in the cell is
measured by means of an optical system, where a green LED is used as a light source, which emits visible light
of 560 nm. GaAs photodiode is used as a detector, which is heated minimally to 30 C. For stability and
accuracy purposes, the measuring cell is also heated to 75 C.
The free acceleration method is a smokiness test, when engine changes its speed from idle to over speed with
accelerator at full-throttle, and the engine is loaded by its own inertial mass and by clutch and gears at geared
neutral.
During free engine acceleration (caused by setting of its accelerator from position idle speed to position fullthrottle) the opacimeter tests opacity in the given time with sampling time interval of 20 ms. Measured samples

are mathematically evaluated and the front panel display shows resulting opacity k [m ]. This procedure repeats
so many times as prescribed until measured values of smokiness fulfil the reproducibility condition. Resulting

smokiness in absolute units [m ] is calculated as arithmetic mean of last valid readouts.
The instrument also calculates the acceleration time ta using the following formula:

In order to ensure correct function of the sampling unit it is necessary to observe the following directions:

The sampling unit must be fixed vertically (with its handle upwards) in the stand. It is not allowed to
use the sampling unit in other position, or without the stand, for the air and outlet holes must be
accessible.
The interconnecting cables must be connected correctly.
Check if both two fans work.
After start-up period, check if both two heater work (temperature of the measuring cells outer metal
cover should be about 10 C higher than ambient air temperature).
7.
SOFTWARE INSTALLATION
7.1
The attached CD contains all the necessary software for the use of Opacimeter system.
Insert the CD in your CD-ROM drive. If the CD does not run automatically, run the autorun.exe program which
you will find on the CD.
7.2
7.2.1
FIRST INSTALLATION
If you install, the program on the computer with Windows 2000 / XP / Vista operation system, log in as a
system administrator.
Click on the menu item Opacimeter Installation (see Fig. 4).

Note 1:
If the CD does not run automatically, run the
autorun.exe program which you will find in the root
directory on the CD.
The Opacimeter program installation is intuitive
you should follow the Installation Wizard displayed on
the PC screen.
Note 2:
The default language of the Wizard is English but
it can correspond to your language version of
Windows.

The installation may take several seconds. Click on Finish to complete the installation.
The pre-installation of drivers for the RS232-USB converter starts after its completion (see Chap. II - 2)
7.2.2
Note:
The default language of the Wizard is English but it can correspond to your language version of
Windows.
To uninstall the program open the installation dialog box. There are 2 options:
a)
Click on Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel. Then click on Remove (Fig. 8). Confirm this
choice in the displayed dialog box (see Fig. 9) and the program will be removed promptly and without
further warning.
Note:
Open the Add or Remove Programs by clicking Start, Control Panel and double-clicking Add or Remove
Programs.
b)
Click on the menu item Opacimeter Installation see Fig. 4 (Autorun.exe on the installation CD
must be launched). Then select Remove (see Fig. 10). Confirm your choice in the displayed dialog
box (see Fig. 11) and the Installation Wizard (see Fig. 12) will immediately remove the program.

7.3
PROGRAM CONFIGURATION
If you configure the program on a computer with Windows 2000 / XP / Vista operation system, log in as
system administrator.
Prior to launching the configuration program, do the following:
a)
exit the Opacimeter program
b)
install the USB-RS 232 converter (see Chap. II - 2)
c)
the communication cable and analyser power supply must be correctly connected
Start the actual configuration utility by clicking on Opacimeter AT605 configuration (see Fig. 13)

Launch the FindPort.exe program which can be found on the installation CD or which can be downloaded
from the website www.atal.cz/download/FindPort.exe
The program displays all available serial ports (see Fig. 16). After the port testing device is connected to the
serial port, its description and status are displayed on the screen (see Fig. 17).

Note: Some devices only require the Rx-Tx connections to function correctly (e.g. the AT605 Opacimeter).
Remove the testing device and plug in the connector of the selected device. It is important to set the detected
port number for the selected device (in this example COM5) in the Configuration Program (for starting this
program see Chap. I - 7.3 and Fig. 14 - note3).
8.
PROGRAM CONTROL
After successful program installation, a new Multi-Diag program group is created if not already present (see
Fig. 18) with a Opacimeter entry. A Opacimeter icon (see Fig. 19) is placed on the desktop.

Before you start the software, the Sampling Unit should be connected to the power supply and the computer,
and it should be correctly configured. In the same way the Speed Sensor should be connected to the computer
and configured. If the software cannot communicate with the devices it will notify the operator with a fault
message and it will not be able to carry out testing.

PROGRAM STARTUP
If everything is connected and configured properly, you can start the program itself. The program will be started
by clicking on the Opacimeter icon on the desktop of the screen (see Fig. 19) or on the Opacimeter item from
the Start\Programs program group (see Fig. 18).
After the program has been started, the heating-up test for the Sampling Unit measuring cells (LCS 2400) will
be carried out. Until the unit is heated up to the required temperature (75C), the message about the heating is
blinking in the info box and the current measuring cell temperature is shown in the temperature box (see Fig.
21).

The measuring is carried out by connecting a suitable cable to the battery of the vehicle. There are two options
to select from:
Connect it to the vehicles battery terminals: Red terminal is + pole; Black terminal is pole

11.1.1
MEASUREMENT PRINCIPLE
The universal speed sensor performs frequency analysis of the battery voltage. The ripple waveforms added to
the DC battery voltage by the alternator allow engine speed to be computed.
11.1.2
RECOMMENDATIONS
It is advantageous not to have fully charged battery - switch the headlights on for a while before
measurement.
While the measurement is in progress try to increase the current consumption (e.g. switch headlights
and/or other electrical instruments on).
Direct connection to the battery terminals usually gives more reliable results than other points.
In case of implausible speed readings try to resynchronise the sensor by pressing the F9 key
(position 5 - Fig. 23).

The measurement is performed by reading the values from the electronic control unit (ECU) of the vehicle. The
communication with the vehicle can be started or ended by pressing the F9 button (pos.5 - Fig. 23).

Warning:
You should disconnect the EOBD cable when no communication with the control unit (the F9 button is red) is
present, only. Therefore, if you want to disconnect the cable from the EOBD connector quitthe communication
by pressing F9 first.

The measurement is performed by reading the values from the electronic control unit (ECU) of the vehicle.

As soon as the cell is heated up to the required temperature, the linearity test and calibration will be carried out
before the test is started, the probe shall be removed from the exhaust. If the probe is not removed from
the exhaust, the calibration may be carried out incorrectly and error will be displayed.

Then the program is automatically switched over to the Current Opacity Mode, see Chap. 15.1 in which the
current values are measured.
Note:
Within the first 15 seconds or so after the initialization is completed, the speed and temperature values may be
scored out (----) because of the initial synchronization of the Speed Sensor. Then the speed and temperature
values shall appear.

MEANING OF COMMANDS
HOLD GAS PEDAL command
Keep the gas pedal to the floor at this command.
ACCELERATE command
Accelerate at the maximum speed at this command.
SET IDLE SPEED command
Set idle speed of the engine at this command.
BREAK command
Obligatory break before the acceleration. The number in the centre of the command box shows how
many seconds remain till the end. During this waiting time you shall run the engine at the idle speed.
FAULT signal
This command signals the presence of a fault in the emission test. The program requires operators
interference.
STOP command
Release the gas pedal at this command and run the idle speed.
INSERT THE PROBE command
Insert the probe back to the exhaust at this command.
REMOVE THE PROBE command
Remove the probe back from the exhaust at this command and ensure it sucks fresh air.
CONTINUE command
You can continue with the next step of the emission test at this command.
VISUAL INSPECTION WRONG signal
Signals to the operator the selection of the visual inspection result insufficient.
VISUAL INSPECTION ALL RIGHT signal
Signals to the operator the selection of the visual inspection result sufficient.
WAIT command
At this command wait until the operation in progress is completed.

CURRENT OPACITY
The current opacity values are shown in this mode. These values are periodically updated approx. every 50

PEAK OPACITY
This mode is used for the informative check of the maximum opacity value. The value is measured by the socalled non-revolution acceleration. This test can be started pressing the F5 key (see Fig. 22)

This mode serves for performing the official emission test of the diesel engine set forth by law or decree. This
mode can only be started from the Current Opacity Mode by pressing the 11 button or the F4 key (see Fig. 22).
Before you enter this mode, you shall connect and set the Speed Sensor and the Engine Temperature Sensor
properly. The measured engine shall run.
You can use a remote control (RC) for a comfortable control of software during the emission test. The symbols
on the RC correspond to the symbols used on the buttons in the program. (Note: cross and enter on the RC
generally correspond to the ESC and ENTER keys.)

ZERO CHECK AND TEST LINEARITY TEST CARRIED OUT FROM THE TOOL BAR
The zero check and linearity test are carried out automatically after each switch-on and heat-up of the device.
The zeroing is also performed before every emission test. From the Tool Bar, you can carry out the zero check
and linearity test of the Sampling Unit at any time while in the Current Opacity Mode.
If you press the Zero check button (Pos.4 - Fig. 56) or the Linearity Test button (pos.5 - Fig. 56), the software
will go to the Current Opacity Mode automatically and the message box shows the zeroing result (see Fig. 59
) or the linearity test result (see Fig. 60) for a time of approx. 5s.

SAMPLING PROBES
Various variants of sampling probes are supplied to Opacimeter. For measuring on tractors, the probe of U
shape is determined. Sampling probe 10 mm is determined for the vehicle with exhaust pipe to diameter 70
mm. Sampling probe 27 mm is determined for the vehicle with exhaust pipe over diameter 70 mm. The
vehicle producer can change this regulation in the diameter range 60 80 mm.
Probes are connected to the outlet opening of the sampling unit. Probe terminal, designed for being inserted
into the car exhaust, shall be during measuring placed in the exhaust pipeline in the distance that is equal to at
least diameter of the exhaust.
Correct placing of the probe in the car exhaust is shown in Fig. 61. Probe can be fixed to the exhaust using
fixing tongs.

RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE
The Opacimeter instrument is designed so that it needs almost no maintenance. However, some components of
the sampling units optical assembly do require regular maintenance. It is recommended to check visually
cleanness of optical lens one time per month, and, using soft moistened cloth, remove possible stuck soot. It is
prohibited to use any cleaning liquids!
Possible soot deposit inside the measuring cell caused by measuring of smokiness before sufficient heating of
the cell can be removed by means of the nylon brush, which is a part of instruments standard equipment. Prior
to cleaning, it is necessary to disconnect the sampling unit from the mains supply.

The drivers are installed and will be used later for the detection of new hardware after the connection of the

If the old drivers are not removed, the new drivers will not be installed and the correct operation of the RS232USB converters cannot be guaranteed.

An infrared remote control AT 157 is
supplied with the Opacimeter as an
accessory so the operator can carry
out the emissions test from the drivers
seat of the vehicle under test.
The
remote
control
receiver
(hereinafter referred to as RC) is
connected to a USB port of the PC.
The use of the RC is intuitive as the symbols on the RC correspond to the symbols used on the buttons in
programs using the RC.

If you install the program into a computer with Windows 2000 / XP / Vista operation systems, you must
have administrator rights.
Warning:
1)
The receiver should not be connected to the USB port before program installation.
2)
If you install a newer version, first exit the RC program if it is running. You will thus avoid
potential issues after updating the installation.
You install the RC on a PC only once. If you have already installed the latest RC version, then you do not have
to install it again if you install new Opacimeter software.
Click the option Remote Control Installation in the menu (see Fig. 77).
Note 1:
If the CD does not run automatically, run the
autorun.exe program which you will find in the root
directory on the CD.

The RC has its own configuration utility called Remote Control configuration which opens when you
click on Remote Control configuration from the Start\Programs\Multi-Diag program group (see Fig.
100).

The following dialog box is dispalyed after launching the configuration utility.
Recommendation:
If you do not know or are not sure which port the RC is connected to, use the auto detection by clicking the
Auto Detect CommPort button (see Fig. 102). You will then be prompted to press and hold any button of the
remote control while auto detection takes place (see Fig. 103). After a few seconds the RC should be detected
(see Fig. 104).

If the auto detection is successful, an appropriate message is displayed and the detected port number is
automatically set. Fig. 104).
Otherwise a warning message about unsuccessful automatic detection is displayed (see Fig. 105).
In such a case it is necessary to check
whether:
1) the RC receiver is connected to the PC
2) the batteries in the RC are OK
3) otherwise try to set the port manually
However the auto detection should work
in the vast majority of cases.

For the RC to function correctly it is necessary to set the address of the RC transmitter (if there are more RCs in
the workplace, you should give each RC transmitter a unique address).
You should proceed by clicking on the Auto Detect Address button (see Fig. 106). Then the user is informed
that they should click on any button of the RC several times while address detection is in progress (see Fig.
107).

The user should OK the information message and then press on any RC button. If the communication port is set
correctly, the address will be detected after pressing any button approximately five times.
The user is informed about address detection by a dialogue box (see Fig. 108).
If the address is not detected, even after several button presses, then the communication port for the RC is
probably incorrectly set or the RC receiver is not connected to the PC.
Warning:
1) Launch after WIndows start should remain ticked.
If it is unticked, the program will not start automatically when Windows starts. Then you will always have to run
the RC program manually from the Start menu (see Fig. 98).
2) At the end of configuration, always remember to click on the OK button! (see Fig. 109).
Thus the new settings are saved. Otherwise if you click on the Cancel button, no changes to the
configuration settings are made.

If you set the RC COM port incorrectly, then it will not work despite the fact that the icon signals functional state.
You can check whether the RC is really correctly configured and functions by selecting the option Test remote
control in the menu (by right-clicking on the RC icon - see Fig. 112).

Click Test Remote Control to open the test window. A remote control dialog will then be displayed on the
screen (see Fig. 113). Now if you push any RC button (see Fig. 114), the relative button on the screen will turn
green (see Fig. 115).
