Canada’s sweet
sixth for McIvor
Where Canada started to fear their medal
count, all of a sudden the amount of gold
is starting to rise to great heights. After
Virtue and Moir won the gold in the ice
dancing event two days ago, Ashleigh McIvor
did it in women’s ski cross yesterday. The
26-year-old Canadian, second in the world
cup rankings, defeated Hedda Berntsen of
Norway and Marion Josserand of France to
win the sixth gold medal for Canada and

De Jong completes
Olympic collection
Winning silver in Nagano, being the Olym-
pic champion in 2006 and getting bronze in
2010; Bob de Jong has completed his medal
collection. Surprisingly, he won all medals
on the same event, the 10 kilometer. After
he saw Sven Kramer being disqualified, he
couldn’t believe what just happened. “It
took me a few minutes before I realized that
I would receive the bronze. It’s sad that it
needed to happen this way, but I’m still very
happy with this medal.”
Rochette keeps her
emotions in control
With her mother passing away just a few
days ago, Joannie Rochette kept her cool du-
ring the short program in the figure skating
event. With a personal best of 71.36, she
ended up in third place, giving her a good
chance to win a medal on thursday. Only Yu-
Na Kim of Korea and Mao Asada of Japan
produced a higher score.

Canadians caught by
orange skating fever
The 10K speed skating started, to favor the
Dutch viewers, at 11.00 am. For the Canadians,
25 laps is way to many to stay focused, even if
there are only eight races. So, if Canadians aren’t
interested in speed skating, why are they at the
Olympic Oval?

“No, it’s certainly not a Hockey stadium, but I love
it.” Rob Maclauchlan sees a speed skating arena
for the first time, and he has fallen in love with it
instantly. “There is some awesome energy in this
place.”
Together with his wife he left Toronto for the 2010
Vancouver Olympics. After seeing several hockey
games, Maclauchlan is for the first time in the
Richmond Olympic Oval for the 10K race. With a
beer and lots of questions he settles himself between
the orange.
“We wanted to visit as many games as possible. We
were hoping for some free style skiing, but all those
tickets were gone pretty quickly. Then we thought,
why not going to speed skating. We remembered
some good results for the Canadians in the past, in
the short distances mostly. And the Olympics are

You were present at the 10K event, how was
the atmosphere in the oval?
It’s the first time that I’m at the Olympic games,
and my first speed skating contest as well. The
funny thing was: It felt just like home, like 90
percent of the Olympic Oval was filled with fellow
countrymen. When a Dutch skater passed by, the
oval would rise up, even when he was behind.
And all of a sudden, it went wrong…
Very wrong indeed. Everybody thought that Sven
was going win gold. He skated so easily, and every
lap was terrific. But he doesn’t win, just because he
skated in the wrong side of the pylon. Kramer is a
real winner. For many years, I had to work hard to
get myself to the level I am now. But even I didn’t
have to overcome a disappointment like this.

sports. So here we are.”
Within a few minutes, he knows the fans in orange
are the ones who can give him all the answers to his
questions. When the Dutch party band ‘Kleintje
Pils’ arrives, he’s wondering if these ‘artists’ are fa-
mous in Holland. “And how that Kramer guy? Isn’t
he the one who should bring you the gold?”
As soon as the event starts, Maclauchlan is totally
focused on the ice. Sometimes his eyes cross the
scoreboard to see the lap times. For the rest, he wat-
ches the skaters and keeps firing questions at the
Dutch.
“Your skaters look like nice accessible guys. You
could even compare them with our Canadian hoc-
key players. Most of the time, hockey players are
regular, hard working guys, without showing of.
These skaters are just the same. I like that kind of
attitude.
Maclauchlan is a quick learner. When he sees the
Dutch supporters aren’t pleased during Kramer’s
race, he knows what went wrong. But still, he learnt
a lot in just over two hours of speed skating. “I like
this sport. I’m going to visit this more often. I just
became a fan, and with the orange crowd around, it
still feels good to be here.”

Now you’re going to perform in the Holland
Heineken House, but no gold to celebrate.
That’s true. At first, I didn’t even want to perform
today. But I figured out that the people needed
something to cheer them up. I’ll just go for it, per-
haps the atmosphere is a little bit weird. The funny
thing is, yesterday I was in the House of the Swiss.
But the atmosphere here is a lot better already.
This place in unique.
