Re: Application for Exhibition at the E3 Gallery, Wagga Wagga.

Evanescent
We are two photographers located in Wagga Wagga who wish to have our work
exhibited within the E3 Gallery, the work reflects us as rural artist and it only felt
fitting that we aim to exhibit the work within a Gallery located in the Riverina.
The work we are interested in exhibiting is an ongoing series of rural landscape
photographs that put forward the idea that the landscape photograph will be our last
example of environmental futility; much like the extinct animal, we will only have
images or memories of such an existence. Through out the past two years both Chiu
Yin Tsang and I have been photographing rural landscapes with this concept in mind.
Whilst we have been photographing separately, we both aim to open the discussion of
environmental futility and the idea that can we save the landscapes or only hinder the
process of them becoming evanescent?
The individual paths that lead us to this discussion involved many themes that will be
presented within the works, these include us creating images that provoke the
viewers emotional connection with the landscape and their perception of
environmental melancholia. As artists our works tend to look towards the sublime but
we wish to combine the sublime with an inherent melancholy so that the photographs
will bring about within each of us, a sense of a serenity, sadness and a spiritual
longing. The viewer is asked to think about the inevitable demise of the landscapes,
spaces being non-existent, and much like their own lives and photographs of them,
will come to the terms that these photographs may outlive them.
The reason why we believe it would be beneficial to exhibit both our works together
is due to the discussion that will be provoked by the similarities and differences being
conveyed within the photographs. As well as how each image will talk to each other
and how each image will provide a different emotional connection with the viewer.
By combining the works they will serve as a coherent and valid series in which that
each photographs themes will be reinforced by one another.
We wish to display the images in a variety of sizes; some of which will be small and
framed but larger digital prints will be pinned. From displaying large prints as
opposed to smaller prints we aim to create an idea of importance between the
photographs as well as to play with narrative conventions. Both our works will not be
separated entirely to identify each artist but carefully curated and placed by one
another so they nobodies work will out weigh the other. This way they are separated,
but in conversation. As part of the exhibition program it is our intention to host an
artists talk and an exhibition opening to engage the wider community including CSU
and its programs.
