Believe and Take Me

I

am the bread which comes down from

heaven. The statement of Jesus
which made the Jews squirms with
discomfort.
This truth was too difficult for them to
bear and they were scandalized. How can
they accept Jesus as coming down from
heaven when they know His ordinary
lineage? His father and mother are but
common folks. So, they murmured, a sign
of their unbelief in what Jesus claims and
rebellion against Him.
Jesus further rubbed salt on their
wounded feelings when He declared that
He is the true bread that came down from
heaven that is far superior to the bread
that their ancestors ate in the desert.
Here, He compares and contrasts the
former bread from heaven with Him, the
living, life-giving Bread. Unlike the manna
that provided sustenance for a while, He,

Himself is the source of eternal life.

When Jesus said my flesh for the life
of the world, He added insult to injury, that
the enmity between Him and some Jews
became deep. These Jews tried all their
means to silence Jesus but these did not
affect the radical way of Jesus teaching.
Today, Eucharistic devotion often
takes the form of Adoration of the Blessed
Sacrament. However, we should not forget
that the intention of Jesus in instituting the
Sacrament of the Eucharist is to give His
own Self as food. And we know fully well
that we can normally receive this heavenly
food in the Eucharistic celebration or the
Holy Mass.
Yes, there are some people who
say, why go to the Sunday Mass when
we can also pray anywhere as God is
everywhere? But the question is can we
receive Jesus anywhere? We must know

that the Eucharistic celebration cannot be

experienced its full meaning when we, who
participate do not receive communion.
Why? It is because communion is the
ultimate act of faith in accepting Jesus as
food.
When we take Christ in Holy
Communion, Christ gives Himself to us as
food and drink so that we can continue to
do His will. Doing His will helps transform
our ordinary life into a life of faith that
gives us the power that comes from God
to make the world a better place to live
in. Because in doing His will we become
united as one not only with Christ but with
each other for there is only one Christ.
Eventually we can say that it is no longer
I who live but Christ who lives in me. (Gal.
2:20).
So, believe that the Eucharist is Jesus,
the living and life-giving Bread. Take Him!

pagselebrar sang Balaan nga mga bulohaton
sa pagsimba bilang matuod nga mga pari
sang Bag-o nga Kasugtanan. Labi sa tanan,
paagi sa pagselebrar sang Santos nga Misa,
ang mga pari nagahikot sa labing mataas
nga paagi sang ila balaan nga bulohaton.

lainlain nga grado; ini nga mga grado
amo ang Obispo, pari kag diakono. Ini nga

a. Ang mga Obispo
Paagi sa konsagrasyon sang Obispo,
ang kabug-osan sang Sakramento sang
Pag-orden ginahatag sa iya pati man ang
katungdanan sa pagpasantos, pagpanudlo
kag paggahom. Pero ini, sarang lamang
mahimo sa sulod sang isa ka paghiusa upod
sa pinuno nga amo ang Santo Papa kag sa
mga katapo sang grupo sang mga Obispo.
Ang Obispo nagapanghikot sang mismo
bulohaton ni Kristo bilang Manunudlo,
Manugbantay kag Mataas nga Pari, kag ini
iya ginabuhat sa persona ni Kristo. Ang
tagsa ka Obispo, bilang Tiglawas ni Kristo,
may responsibilidad para sa diosesis nga
gintugyan sa iya pagtatap. Pero upod sa
pareho niya nga Obispo, may katungdanan

pagtuman sang misyon sang mga apostoles

ilisipon lang sa mga pamatan-on sang Jaro

2015 CENSUS OF
POPULATION (POPCEN)
We are calling for the cooperation of
everyone as the Philippine Statistics Authority
(PSA) sets the nationwide conduct of the 2015
Census of Population (POPCEN 2015). The PSA
pursuant to Republic Act 10625 or the Philippine
Statistical Act of 2013, is the governments
central agency on civil registration, statistics
and data collection. The agency has been tasked
in the preparation and conduct of nationwide
population counts.
Enumeration is on August 10 to September
6, 2015 in most provinces and may be extended
until end of September 2015 in big cities.
Enumerators wearing official POPCEN 2015
IDs will visit and interview every household to
ask basic information about its members, such
as age, sex, marital status, education, and usual
occupation, if any. The interview will take about
15 to 30 minutes for each household.
The PSA calls for all to cooperate and provide
truthful answers to census questions.

n our desire to be of maximum service to

the Church, the Ministry of Readers has
a continuous training program for its
lectors and commentators in order to build
a deeper appreciation of the Word of God
and for their own Catholic faith.
Last Saturday, August 1, Fr. Dennis
Batacandolo gave a Proclaim-the- Word!
lector training at the La Isabelita Hall, from
2:00 to 5:00 in the afternoon. Forty-seven
MOR members and twenty-seven walk-in
participants attended the very significant
and most needed lector training.
Here are Fr. Batacandolos important
reminders:
Lectors and Commentators must come
to the Sacristy at a maximum of 30 minutes
or a minimum of 15 minutes before assigned
readings, not to practice but to pray! It
should be embarrassing for the Priest, altar
servers, etc. are waiting for you;
Prepare your readings at home one
week ahead read, reflect, understand the
Word of God and pray and ask God what His
message is for you;
Lectors must nourish his or her own
prayer life with the study of the Sacred

Scriptures through correct practice of

regular scriptural readings;
There is a spiritual message readily
apparent in almost every passage. The
readers goal is to allow the congregation to
hear the message;
Gods Word is holy and its proclamation
is a moment of grace of Gods presence in
the community. Reverence for this would
suggest that reading of the Holy Scripture
must be sincere;
Besides concrete preparation and
the learning of personal techniques and
personal principles, the lector should
deepen his or her understanding of the
messages by reading the Word of God daily;
Discipline, sincerity, humility and
commitment are very important;
Read and read, know the proper pauses,
be sure your voice is clear and audible;
Look at yourself in the mirror, look
at the formation of your mouth, if you can
read what your mouth is saying, people will
also understand what you are talking;
Our general body posture is also
important. We should be alert, relaxed, with
a gentle purpose, in this way the message of

in the lectors voice and emphasis;
Be friendly with the microphone. If you
understand what you are reading, then the
congregation will also understand what you
are saying;
Commentators, must not read from the
Sambuhay because it is of national scope,
do not dictate people to stand, kneel or sit
but do it with prudence, like, everybody is
invited to stand, kneel, or sit;
Commentators should not compete with
the priest. If the people know the responses
of the Mass, stay at the background.
Fr. Batacandolo explained briefly the
English Phonology. He gave examples on
the correct pronunciation of some words be
it British, American and Australian English
accents. The Philippine English uses the
American accent.
It was such a refreshing and remarkable
afternoon for all of us!

The Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary

his marian dogma was proclaimed by

Pope Pius XII on November 1, 1950
on his Encyclical Munificentissimus
Deus.
A distinction needs to be made between
Ascension and Assumption. Jesus Christ,
Son of God and Risen Lord, ascended into
heaven, a sign of divine power. Mary, on
the contrary, was elevated or assumed into
heaven by the power and grace of God.
The dogma states that Mary,
Immaculate Mother of God ever Virgin,
after finishing the course of her life on
earth, was taken up in body and soul to
heavenly glory. This definition as well as
that of the Immaculate Conception makes
not only reference to the universal, certain
and firm consent of the Magisterium but
makes allusion to the concordant belief of
the faithful. The Assumption had been a
part of the Churchs spiritual and doctrinal
patrimony for centuries. It had been part of
theological reflection but also of the liturgy
and was part of the sense of the faithful.
This dogma has no direct basis in
scripture. It was nonetheless declared
divinely revealed, meaning that it is
contained implicitly in divine Revelation. It
may be understood as the logical conclusion
of Marys vocation on earth, and the way
she lived her life in union with God and her

mission. The assumption may be seen as a

consequence of Divine Motherhood. Being
through, with, and for her Son on earth, it
would seem fitting for Mary to be through,
with, and for her Son in heaven, too. She
was on earth the generous associate of
her Son. The Assumption tells us that this
association continues in heaven. Mary is
indissolubly linked to her Son on earth and
in heaven.
In heaven, Marys active involvement
in salvation history continues: Taken up
to heaven, she did not lay aside her salvific
duty ... By her maternal love she cares for
the brothers and sisters of her Son who
still journey on earth (LG). Mary is the
eschatological icon of the Church (CCC
972), meaning the Church contemplates in
Mary her own end of times.
The definition of the dogma does not
say how the transition from Marys earthly
state to her heavenly state happened. Did
Mary die? Was she assumed to heaven
without prior separation of soul and body?
The question remains open for discussion.
However, the opinion that Mary passed
through death as her Son did, has the
stronger support in tradition.
Glorified in body and soul, Mary is
already in the state that will be ours after
the resurrection of the dead.

e are specially featuring in this

issue a kasimanwa of ours whose
name is Fr. Dennis Batacandolo,
who, anytime soon, is leaving us again
for another assignment from his mother
congregation in Rome, Italy.
Fr. Dennis was born and grew up in
Iloilo City. His education include: classical
high school at the then St. Joseph Junior
Seminary; A.B.Philosophy at the then St.
Vincent Ferrer Major Seminary; Theology
at the Don Bosco Center of Studies in
Paranaque; Licentiate and Masters in
Theology at the University of Santo Tomas,
Manila; and Doctorate in Spiritual Theology
at the Pontifical University of Santo Tomas
in Rome, Italy.

For twelve years after his college

studies, Fr.Dennis tried his hand in the field
of the Media, particularly as a radio-TV
broadcaster with the now defunct IBC-TV
12; with the academe at the University of
San Agustin, where he taught and directed
in school stage plays and as the director
of the USA Little Theater. He likewise
initiated a unique landmark project, the
first of its kind, when he opened the Speech
and Language Center Iloilo, offering short
courses on the different foreign languages,
such as: German, French, Nippongo,
Japanese, and English. But when Martial
Law was declared in the early seventies,
everything changed, making him leave for
Manila where he finished his studies for
the priesthood.
Then, in 2011, he came back to Iloilo
after he had been in Manila, Paraaque,
Rome in Italy, and Massachusetts in the
U.S., in line with his priestly duties as a
member of the Congregation of the Sacred
Stigmata, whose members are called
Stigmatine Fathers and Brothers and
whose founder is St. Gaspar Bertoni.
While in Iloilo on sabbatical leave, the
teacher-preacher priest taught in several
institutions of learning: University of
San Agustin, San Jose College (Colegio de
San Jose), Colegio del Sagrado Corazon
de Jesus, and the St. Joseph Regional
Seminary. He likewise officiated in regular

Sunday Masses in different churches like:

Sta.Teresita in the City proper, Sta. Ana in
Molo, Our Lady of Fatima in Alta Tierra
Village in Jaro, and here at the Metropolitan
Cathedral of St. Elizabeth of Hungary.
Those who attend faithfully his Masses will
be missing his singing voice in the Gloria
and Responsorial Psalm, his very clear,
emphatic, and extemporaneous delivery
of his homilies, and a hard-to-explain
feeling of their hearts being touched by the
Lord at the end of his Masses.
Fr. Dennis may be leaving us soon
for Rome, Italy; his mother congregation
needs him. But he gives this assurance,
that being a native of this city, he will be
back in no time at all. At the end of our
conversation, the good priest said, In
life, what is important is our intimate and
close relationship with our Creator. Let
us give our Lord Jesus all our trust and
faith. Let us love Him with all our hearts
and our neighbor, especially those who
are less- fortunate and who have less in
life. Let us focus our thoughts and actions
on spiritual things rather than on worldly
things, so that by the end of our journey
here on earth, we can claim our promised
inheritance and reward which is eternal
life with our God in Heaven.
We will count the days until you return

School had its General Assembly and
Induction of Officers last Thursday, July
30, 2015 at the La Isabelita Hall of the Jaro
Cathedral Compound.
It was attended by a good number of
parents mostly officers of their respective
class.
Outgoing Federated Parents Teachers
Association (FPTA) President, Mr. Rolito
Milan gave the Welcome Message and
his Accomplishment Report. During Mr.
Milans term the FPTA were able to install
6 units of CCTV cameras around the vicinity
of the SEHKS grounds. They were able to
repair the cement benches in front of the
canteen, the stage and the cyclone fence.
Repainting jobs of the outside walls of the
whole SEHKS building and the statue of St.
Elizabeth of Hungary in the faade of the La
Isabelita Hall facing the Jaro Plaza was made
possible. They were also able to purchase
one unit of LCD Projector for the school
and concretize the side of the Guadalupe
classroom. School programs and activities
were very successful because cooperation
was very much alive among parents and
teachers last school year.
Mrs. Elenita G. Java, the SEHKS
Principal also gave a Welcome Message. A
report from the Fortune Insurance Agent,
Mrs. Flora Lupangco was delivered and
queries on insurance concerns were well
