Message From The Campus Director

Med-Life Kissimmee Students,

I wanted to take a moment to encourage all of you whom have a HESI component in their
class to PLEASE prepare each and every day AND utilize all resources at your disposal.
Whether it is:

The instructor,
your text(s) books,
online resources such as HESI practice, etc.,
even the public library or the computer labs on campus

for these are all fantastic opportunities to learn the nursing content of each course.
One bit of information to always consider is: you have endeavored to become a nurse. A
nurse, like any other allied health care professional, requires that you continue your education
(and to keep your license) by earning Continuing Education Units (CEUs), therefore you will
have to learn on your own via various technologies and methodologies to earn acceptable CEUs
for the Board of Nursing. I have am required to earn the same CEUs as a registered nurse
(R.N.), although I am a radiographer R.T. (R): 24 CEUs every two years.
Please note: the ability to study nursing in any nursing school, not just Med Life
Institute (MLI), requires you to go above and beyond what is taught in class. Above and beyond.
Nurses are on the frontline of medical care. You will get patients when you are employed who
may have a multitude of pre-existing health problems on top of any acute condition(s) presented
to you. This requires you to prioritize what is most urgent versus what can be addressed later.
Prioritization is done via critical thinking skills.
Critical thinking is the ability to extrapolate from the clinical history, chief complaint,
and physical or psychological manifestations to determine what is important right now, versus
what can wait for later (triage). The patient may not be able to reply, respond, and you must have
the ability to analyze the situation and make the correct decision. We must always be mindful
that our goal is to help, assist, or alleviate any problems or illness of a human being.
Therefore, please take it upon yourself to utilize the instructors lecture and associated
laboratory practice in addition to your own research on the course room topics. The instructors
cannot explain or teach every potential issue you may encounter as a nurse during class time
only.
You must have the personal initiative to also reach out to other reference materials such
as those I had noted above, because you are accountable for all information whether the topic has
been discussed in class or not because you have been provided the materials and tools to conduct
further research.

Any additional research that you do as part of your studies to be a nurse, whether you
study for classes at MLI, Valencia, or any institute of higher education in the country, will build
upon information you have already learned from prior courses or personal experience thus
reinforcing the old information you learned while supporting the new information learned via
your own research.
Lastly, HESI is one component of many that comprise your grade for any core nursing
course with a HESI component. One cannot fairly blame that they received a poor grade after
taking their HESI course Exit Exam because their grade was good prior to the HESI exam. If
your grade was good prior to the exam, there is no reason why one could not pass the HESI
exam because each course exit exam is comprised of nursing questions, approved by the Board
of Nursing
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter and I wish you all the best for success.
Respectfully,
Brian D. Love, Ph.D.(c), M.S.R.S., R.T. (R) (ARRT)
Campus Director & Chief Administrator
