Hello everyone,
Regular readers of this column will be pleased to
hear that those of us who go skiing on our nearest
northern mountain are on Mt Buller and not skiing
down the sides of Bulla Cream Factory. Meanwhile
most of us are in hibernation waiting for the first
burst of spring.
Thank you to the members who have rejoined,
or are in the process of rejoining for 2015-16,
and a special thank you to those who have made
donations.
Vale Diana.
We were sad to learn of the death of Diana
Learmonth a longstanding resident of Barwon
Heads and member of the BHA. We will all miss her
in town, her humour, wisdom and great knowledge
of Barwon Heads, its families and the Barwon

July was a cold month and while I was

recently enjoying my first holiday in
Bali, facebook messages kept
informing me that you were
freezing...literally, as temperatures
plummeted below 0c and it snowed in
many areas. Youd expect this in

Questions and feedback to Sarah covered:

concerns about the health risks of wind farms but

winter and hope for it as fruit trees and

other flora depend on it.
July average was 10c and rainfall was
49mm over 16.1 days.
August will again start off cold but a
couple of warmer weeks will take us
out...a welcome change for us

all...bring on Spring!!
This month Ill share some of my

BARWON HEADS

Kind People

Whilst we have had some of the bitterest

winter weather, there are some things that
warm the cockles of the heart, and Im
not referring to warm scarves, or hearty
soups.
One such thing was the recent action of one of our Scout
leaders, who came with his trailer, and without needing
payment, took a HUGE load of rubbish off to the tip. We
also had offers from the Barwon Heads Fire Brigade,
along with their thanks for our donation, to do whatever
chores they could to help us. We were also blown away
by the donation of much-needed wool from a kind man
called John, from Ocean Grove. Many of our volunteers
still knit items...now small blankets, to send off to AIDS
babies in Africa. We had been almost unable to have

enough wool to sell to needy customers, and certainly

had not been able to keep any for our knitters. However,
the supremely kind actions of a young Barwon Heads
woman, Jasmine Wilkie, beats all of that. Jasmine has
taught aboriginal children in the far north for several
years, and is very happy for us to collect small, unsold
items....jewellery, craft stuff, and for boys, small toys,
balls etc. These go back with her after she has spent her
holidays with her parents in Barwon Heads. When her
pupils turn up to school regularly for her Earn and
Learn scheme, she awards them with money tokens.
Then, at the end of the week, they can go and buy the
simple items we are so happy to pass on to her.
Talking of toys....we older ladies are often unaware how
certain items we have donated as toys, fit together, or
what they should sell for. If any younger people could
come along to advise, wed make them very welcome. I
was especially conscious of this when a child
commented, I wouldnt pay $1 for that. It was a
McDonalds give-away. This was something I would not
have known, since I so rarely go to that outlet.
During the recent school holidays we worked five days of
the week which is quite a strain for many of us, even
though we do have some extra volunteers, who come to
help us during that time. Each day we get to the shop
about 9 a.m., since it takes quite a time to set out many
things....racks of clothes outside the Sorting Room, and
toys, bikes and small items of furniture outside the
Show-room. I often dont leave the shop till 1.30 by the
time Ive popped over to our excellent Community Bank

to deposit the takings. So it was most disappointing that

for all our efforts, our results were pretty dismal.
Certainly, when the weather is so awful, people dont get
up so early if they are on holiday, but even later in the
day, our shop was FAR from crowded. I have heard that
we are not Robinson Crusoe, which is a very oldfashioned saying to mean that other shops are feeling
the same situation. I had commented on this, and many
people report that with losses of jobs, and other financial
bad news, maybe people are just not spending, even at
our bed-rock prices. I had also noticed during term-time
that customers were fewer. Once again, another local
trader mentioned that since we have the wonderful Bop
Bop Karrong down at the far end of the town, many
young mums who previously spent a short amount of
time browsing at our excellent kids wear, find that they
just dont get up as far as this. PLEASE come back to
us!! I jokingly say that my six grand-children were almost
exclusively dressed by the Barwon Heads Op Shop, as
are most of our volunteers. We get some really super
childrens clothes, often barely worn because they grow
our of them so quickly. The only items parents mention
they find difficult to get from us, which I found when
looking for them, were boys pants. I guess, like my
grandsons, knees of pants go though so quickly on
active boys!
Anyway, cheer up, only another month till spring, and we
DO need the rain.
God bless you

Midwinter Jazz

Join us for an afternoon of Jazz

featuring Kym Dillon on piano and
Isaac (Zac) Barter on Double Bass

Sunday 9 August 2015 at 2.30pm

All Saints
Anglican Church
Barwon Heads
Tickets: Members $10 Visitors $15
Enquiries: phone Jenny on 5254 2580
Please join us for afternoon tea following the concert!
Proudly sponsored by

The Anglican Church Hall was packed on Sunday July 12,

despite it being the coldest day so far this winter. The
occasion was a concert by Abe, Kerrie and Friends. Abe
Cytrynowski, (more often known as Avi) and Kerrie Lange
had given us a concert 2 years ago, and this time they
brought with them pianists Sam Coates and Sally Dimsey,
as well as singers Genevieve and Holly, better known as
the Citronella Candles.

The program began with Avi and Sam performing the well-known Furiant in G
major by Dvorak. The piece was performed with both delicacy and vigour, the two
pianists working beautifully together. Holly and Genevieve gave us two of their
own compositions, playing guitar, ukulele, and piano. Their sweet voices were
really refreshing. Sally Dimsey performed several works: Five Rumanian dances
by Bartok, O Polichinelo by Villa-Lobos, and Nocturne op 54 no 4 by Grieg. Sally
has a precise, delicate touch, with every note beautifully distinct.
Kerrie sang two items for us: Trenet's Que reste-t-il de nos amours (I wish you
Love) and Lloyd-Webber's Memory from the musical Cats. Both were done
beautifully and with much feeling. Sam brought us the ever-popular Claire de
Lune by Debussy, with both delicacy and power, and then sang to Sally's
accompaniment the well-known Mozart piece Rhondo alla Turca: But this was
no ordinary singing! She sang it in solfa, at lightning speed, and invited us to join
in as percussion. It was great fun and an astonishing feat by Sam
Avi brought us the jazz style of Gershwin, in his Prelude no 3, and also Chopin's
haunting Nocturne in C# minor. As a finale he presented the incredibly energetic
theme from the Pirates of the Caribbean, by Badelt. Avi's playing was full of power
and vigour, but with appropriate precision and delicacy as the pieces demanded.
Perhaps the high point in a stunning concert was Mozart's Sonata in G, K283,
played by Sam and Avi. Most interestingly, Mozart wrote this 3-movement piece
in 1774 and then 100 years later, Edvard Grieg thought he could improve on
Mozart, by adding a second piano score. Amazing to think that anyone could
presume to improve on WA Mozart! Avi played the Mozart, and Sam the Grieg, in
a wonderful interlacing of harmonies. This was a superb piece.
It is wonderful that we are able to present music and musicians of such quality in
our little town. Those who braved the wintry day had their hearts warmed by what
they heard!
Next month we move to a jazz mode, with Kym Dillon on piano and Isaac Barter
on double bass. The concert will be at 2.30 pm on Sunday August 9th, in All Saints
Anglican Church on Hitchcock Avenue.

WINTER COLOURING IN

Joy Chellew

Last month we featured poetry by Joy

Chellew from her recently launched
book In Search of Peace and this
month we meet the nonagenarian poet
and author.

Joy welcomes me into her comfortable,

warm home on a freezing Sunday
afternoon and as we sit to chat, Im drawn
in by her beautiful, twinkling blue eyes.
In Search of Peace is a spiritual book and
comes from Joys faith which, growing up in
a caring, happy and loving christian family,
has remained with her all of her life.
Joy is of Scottish heritage and is well
traveled having lived in England, Scotland,
France, Switzerland and Israel.
Part of the former Wattle Valley Christian
Poetry Group, later to become The
Wordsmiths of Melbourne, Joy delighted in the regular workshops they ran where one would take along a
poem and have it discussed by the group.
Many years ago, Joy was Joy of Brighton to listeners of 3AWs John Reid program when she would ring in
weekly and read one of her delightful poems.
Recently, she was invited by friends Joshua and Lillian to read her poetry and give an address at a
conference in Kenyas capitol city, Nairobi where she stayed in a magnificent house and was taken up to a
tea plantation for afternoon tea.
Closer to home, Joy is involved in many groups including Probus, KYB (Know Your Bible) Study Group, she
volunteers at the Op-Shop and is known to the children of the Anglican Church playgroup as Nanna Joy.
Nanna Joy delights in the Thursday morning playgroup activities and prepares a poem with pictures to read
to the littlies each week. Stacey Copeland runs the playgroup and Joy pays tribute to Staceys musical and
organisational skills along with her natural talent for bringing the young mums together.
Joy has family in Barwon Heads, and she also loves the friendliness that village life offers and has made
many friends in her time here
Joy is currently writing another book of poems and we look forward to featuring them in coming issues.

Our imagination sculpts his life.

Notes from Bali...

While on retreat at Abing

Terrace, we arrived at
7am ready for yoga on
the first morning to meet our retreat
organiser, Wayan Win. He had 6 young
green coconuts ready for us and one
by one, he tapped the coconut sending
a spray into the air...hed drawn the om
sign onto the side and calling each of
us to sit in front of him, he gave us
blessings and sent us off with our
delicious fresh coconut to drink. He
performed the same ritual on the
closing day. As our yoga studio looked
out over the rice paddies, we watched
people tending the rice, throwing mud
at and shooing away a mother duck
with her 5 ducklings.

Spring is nearly here, so time

to get serious about getting
fit and healthy for summer.

It is suggested that exercise increases mental

abilities by up to 30%. That's why it is said that
exercise is as important for the brain as for the
physical well-being of those over 60.

Decrease free radical damage-the

molecules that help increase cellular
deterioration.

Exercisers are generally more flexible, have more

stamina, are stronger and have a higher libido than
their sedentary counter-parts!
Not only that a person with a healthy, toned body
feels more attractive and confident, which can help
to be more relaxed in certain situations.

We're going to look at a few more reasons to

include exercise into your daily, or at least weekly
regime.

Studies indicate that people who weight train 3 or

more times a week seem to experience less free
radical damage than those who don't.

Training helps to create a more

retentive memory- research indicates
an improvement in short term memory
for regular exercisers.
Scientists have found cognitive function improves
with exercise. The effects of senile dementia and
Alzheimer's as we age can be reduced by regular
exercise. This may be because exercise improves
the heart pumping more oxygen laden blood to the
brain.

Better sex- If for no other reason, that

should get you up and running!

Exercise also kick starts the immune

system, hopefully keeping those last minute
colds that creep up at the end of winter.

And of course it will increase your

metabolism, and give that feel good
feeling of the regular exerciser

So get out there and start today or maybe your

reason will be in the next issue!
Regards
Kerry Pettigrove
P.S. If you're finding it hard to get motivated' give
me a call; I'll get you going.

Talking life

So, last week I clocked over 1000 km in my car.

I could have driven to Sydney and beyond with this. Found a
little bit of heat to thaw my constantly purple July toes. But
I had traversed no state line. I'd just driven between
home and the big smoke. That is, our little house by the sea
and Melbourne.
With it being school holidays and loving grandparents in said
big smoke, there was much too-ing and fro-ing (which meant
me driving up and back repeatedly) to access some much
needed extended family time. This loosely translated as
my parents providing free child-care. So that my love and I
could continue our present states of employment, have a
cheeky date night out and even attend a significant
birthday party without much thought of our small loved ones.
Loved small ones they clearly are because I pretty much
clock up this distance to Sydney in my car each week along
the Barwon Heads road. With the swimming, the footy and
all the kooky crazy antics my 3 small ones get into, I spend a
lot of time in the car. All the while, trying to hold down my own
job, feed a happy home and re-train my kids pop music
taste by shifting the dial from fox FM.
When I told my small loves of their impending date in
Melbourne they were pumped. Probably more pumped than
my parents. All except for my middle red. Who had some
social plans of her own. Involving a significant birthday party
for one of her friends. At an indoor trampoline centre in
Grovedale, on Friday at 4:00. About 120 km from where she
was to be sleeping. Making a 240 km round trip for me
starting at 11:00am if she was to attend the party.

So I said No.
To which she howled. And howled. And howled some more.
Layered in the howls were words around my selfish job, how
everyone else is going, how she misses everything and finally
how if I loved her I'd let her go.
And I do love her.
So I agreed to drive the distance. And let her go.
We took off from the other side of Melbourne at 11:00 on
Friday as planned. My only rule was that there was to be no
Fox FM or any commercial radio channel for that matter
during the drive. She agreed and we left on our girls' road
trip happy and excited. Her because she would be going to
her party, Me because I was clearly uma-mum 101. All my
mother guilt at being a working woman conveniently wiped
under the doormat of the passenger seat of my car as it
speed back from Melbourne along the Geelong road. It took
2 hours of driving, just me and my middle red. Watching the
winter grey of the city drawl out into the blues and greens
of the coast.
We arrived at the trampoline centre at 4:05.
I explained to the seemingly 14 year old kid behind the
counter that we were here for the party. He asked me
what party. I told him the birthday party. He told me there
was no booked birthday party. I asked my middle red to
just look for her crew as I stepped back and re-ran the
days of the week through my head. It is indeed Friday. It
is indeed 4:00. My middle red chimed in Friday, 4 o'clock
the 10th of July.
I froze. Turned as purple in the face as my chilblained July
toes and screamed TODAY'S THE FIFTH OF JULY!
I screamed it at my middle red, I screamed it at the
frightened 14 year old behind the reception. I screamed it
at to the world who watched me drive up and back the
same road over and over again getting nowhere every time
except to the same place I started.
Until I stopped screaming. I stopped shaking.
I just stopped.

shodhana.
Sometimes we can be so focused on what we are meant to
be doing and where we are meant to be going, that we lose
the finer details of what we could be doing and where we
could be going. When we try to be everything for everyone it
can often fall apart and ultimately be present for no-one.
Especially those small ones we work the hardest for and
that we love the most.
I looked down at the white face of my middle red, one who
hardly knows how to spell calendar little know read one, and
I saw my own eyes reflected back at me. Wide, open, honest.
I saw the kilometres my own mum clocked up for me. I saw
the sacrifices she had made in her then so I could be who
I am now. I saw the selfless service that motherhood can
be. And in the devotional gift of the ultimate Mother, I saw
my love for my daughter. I saw her love for me. Together we
stared into our shared eyes and saw time.
I hugged my daughter closer than I had for a long time
that day. I made a promise to myself to be less busy and
more present. I made a promise to read every party
invitation to the letter. I promised to look into my middle
red's eyes as often as I could to see her and just as
importantly to see me.
We got back in the car together, my middle red and I. We
hit the Geelong road back up to the big smoke. The return
trip was 3 hours. We hit peak hour traffic. We clocked up our
slow km smiling silently together.
And we did so listening to Fox FM.

WHAT'S COOKING AT FOURTH LIMB OF YOGA - PRANAYAMA

Vast colonnades of newspaper space and

devoted to global leaders predicting some
new, imminent global catastrophe to
enhance our anxiety about the future.

Locally, those comments may be confusing to

some.
With daylight hours increasing by about 1 1/2
minutes from day to day since mid winter, you may
notice that it is no longer pitch black at 5.30p.m. any
more. On a sunny day there may even be time for
an evening walk. Walks that remind us why we live
here in the Village by the sea. Strollers may notice
an emerging green presence: new growth (both
good and bad) at ground level and blossom above.
Yes, all those positive signs that we are recovering
from winter gloom. With Summer to follow soon.
You can bank on that.
The Friends of the Lobster Pot do!
With this in mind, plans have been made; working
bees held and more planned. A flurry of activity to
make the Lobster pot ready for the summer
opening season.
As attentive readers will know this commences on
Boxing Day and continues daily until Australia Day
weekend. Only 160 sleeps away.
The Barwon Estuary Heritage Centre (better known
as the Lobster Pot) is the GREEN building on the
river near 'At the Heads' restaurant. It is operated by
volunteers united by an interest in the natural and
cultural heritage of the Barwon River estuary. If you
share this interest and have spare time once a
month you may wish to join the Friends group. You
can make contact through Barwon Coast. Call in or

The word Pranayama

is broken down into a
couple of words Prana means 'life
f o r c e ' a n d Ya m a
means restraint or
control.
Put simply Pranayama is about breath control. The
practice of Pranayama is a very important limb of
Yoga and our daily life.
The way in which we breathe has a direct effect on
our central nervous system. We can vary the rate of
our breath to either soothe or stimulate the mind
and the body.
There are many forms of Pranayama: Basic 4 part
Yogic Breath, Ujjayi (Victorious) Breath, Brahmari
(Humming Bee) Breath; Sitali (Cooling) Breath;
Sitkari (Hissing) Breath; Nadi Sodhana (Channel
Cleansing). This is to name but a few.
When we marry our breath with our Asana (yoga)
practise we experience great benefits. As we
become more mindful, we learn that our posture
contributes to the flow of our breath. We realise that
when our bodies are hunched that it is more difficult
to breathe. We learn to focus on our posture and to
use the breath by contracting the body on an
inhalation and stretching the body on an
exhalation. We focus on the stretch, encouraging
the muscles to gradually release any tightness and
tension.

turn affects our

breathing!
When we exhale into a
pose, we can focus on
'breathing away' any
mental tension or
negativity.
When we experience a
fright or a shock, our first
involuntary reaction is to
'catch our breath'. In that
moment we have halted the natural flow of the
breath and interrupted the natural flow of energy
moving throughout the body. This can be the first
step to creating an illness or injury. The moment
that we catch our breath, a small pocket of emotion
has been trapped and stored within the body.
This creates a blockage.
This may simply be rectified by focusing on
breathing. With practise, we can learn to 'guide' the
breath to any tight spots within the body and relax
the tension in the muscles or the mind to restore the
natural flow of energy.
This is why conditions such as anxiety, depression,
hyperactivity or hypo activity, low self esteem, etc.
all benefit from a holistic approach to our Yoga
practice.
Working with the breath teaches us to quiet the
mind and prepares us for the inner work on our
Yoga journey On and off our mats!

Notes from Bali...

Each morning I rise early with the crowing

roosters, the beeping scooters and the
omnipresent incense wafting in through the air
conditioning vents.
After a simple meditation and some yoga Im dressed and off,
sometimes by 6.30am. One morning, Im greeted warmly by a
lady who calls me in to her beauty salon (as they do)...after
almost daily massage, my hair needs washing & conditioning
and for $5 I agree to come upstairs, past the family having
breakfast who all greet me...to where a waiting young teenage
girl washed & dried my hair while her sweet faced 4 year old
sister tried to entice me to have a manicure (with polish).

BARWON HEADS FILM SOCIETY

At the Community Hall, Barwon Heads Film Society presents

Thursday March 26 at 7.45pm at the Community Hall

Thursday August 27th 7.45pm

Dir: Rolf de Heer. Blackfella Charlie is out of sorts. The intervention is
making life more difficult on his remote community. So Charlie takes
off, to live the old way, but in so doing he sets off a chain of events that
forces him to return to his community, chastened, and a little wiser.
Filmed in his home country of Ramingining, Arnhem Land, the story
was inspired by Gulpilil's own experiences.
This beautifully crafted film is both humorous and heart-rending.
Cast: David Gulpilil, Peter Djigirr, Luke Ford
"In years to come, the work that Rolf de Heer and David Gulpilil have
done together in the past dozen years will take an exalted place in the
history of Australian film. There is no partnership like it in our cinema."

Talking food...
Perkedel Jagung

(Indonesian Corn Fritters)

3 ears fresh corn, kernels removed from the cob
1 tablespoon chopped garlic chives
(or spring onions)
1 egg, beaten
2 tablespoons rice flour
vegetable oil (for frying)
Spice paste
1 teaspoon coriander seed, lightly toasted
1 chopped hot red chilli
6 shallots, minced
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 teaspoon rock salt
1 tablespoon granulated sugar

Chef Nyomen (centre) shows Lorna how to make sambal

while his assistant makes corn cakes
The recipes this month are inspired by
my first trip to Bali where I dived head
first into the life, the culture and the
food...especially the food!
For the first 5 days, we were at a retreat and all of
our traditional Balinese meals were cooked for us
by chefs. After 7am yoga, 6 of us trotted up to the
restaurant to plates of fresh fruit, omlettes, sunny
face eggs, banana pancakes, nasi goreng, mi
goreng and more.
Lunch and dinner started with soup followed by an
assortment of rice, noodles, curries and salads
and rounded off with a favourite, green rice crepes
(Dadar Gulung) filled with fresh coconut and the
ever present palm sugar syrup.
Our head waiter Mika told us that the food came
from the farms hooking his head towards up the
mountains...and we jumped at the offer to take an
early trip to a market up in the hills, beyond the rice
paddies, through a couple of villages.
As we wandered through (with our driver as a
guide) we became aware that we were the only
westerners there...smiling faces greeted us as we
bought super sweet finger sized bananas, snake
fruit & little fish to be crispy fried whole and served
with lunch...after being touched and pushed on my
back a few times, I realised that, like the scooter
beeping, it was just their way of letting me know
they wanted to come past me as they went about
their business and as I dawdled along.
Chatting to our drivers, Mika and chef Nyomen, we
learn that Balinese eat fresh and seasonal
rejecting processed western style foods like
Maccas, KFC etc. as they dont like the taste.
Processed food is not for them and why would you
bother when you can get a delicious and freshly
cooked nasi goreng for $3 or under or a fresh gado
gado at a Warung (food stall) almost any time.
The best and freshest gado gado I ate was at a tiny
hole in the wall.
Lets try making the pandana leaf crepes so
common on the Balinese menu...

Combine the coriander seeds, chilli, shallots, garlic,

rock salt and sugar in a mortar and pound to a smooth
paste...set aside...in a bowl, lightly pound corn, then add
in spice paste mixing until well combined...add in garlic
chives (or spring onions) then add in the rice flour and
toss to coat evenly...add beaten egg and stir until well
blended...drop by the spoonful into hot peanut oil and fry
until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes...remove and
drain well...serve with sambal...

Dadar Gulung (coconut crepes)

250ml coconut milk

35gm palm sugar
2 eggs
Pinch of salt
2 tbs pandan juice (or green colouring)
75gm rice flour
25gm melted butter
In a mixing bowl, combine flour and coconut milk then
stir until you have a runny paste, adding water if a
thinner consistency is desired...set aside while you
prepare the filling...
1 cup grated coconut
cup coconut (palm) sugar
Toast the coconut in a large frying pan...once the
coconut starts to brown, add the sugar and continue
to toast until your kitchen smells amazing (2-3
minutes)...in another large frying pan, add a drop of
oil, and add one ladle of crepe batter into the centre of
the pan, and spread evenly...cook each side of the
crepe until golden brown, and lay to cool on a
plate...spoon a few tbs of the sweetened coconut
mixture into the centre of the crepe...fold in the
corners and roll like a spring roll...serve warm.

Sambal
5 to 6 cloves of garlic, chopped
knob of fresh ginger
knob of fresh turmeric
5 to 6 shallots minced
3 red chilies
6 candlenuts (or macadamias)
4 medium sized tomatoes
1tsp shrimp paste
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon of palm sugar
Heat 1/4 cup olive oil then fry off all ingredients...cool a
little then blend until smooth...serve with corn cakes.
These cakes would be delicious with potato and I would
add some chopped fresh or dried dill along with some
finely chopped celery.
Pierce then microwave 4 medium potatoes for 6 minutes
on high...cool slightly then mash until not quite
smooth...mix with other ingredients then form into cakes
and shallow fry until golden brown.
Serve with sambal

Bellarines newest chiropractor Dr. Kane Fraser

is an engaging person who is very fit with high
energy levels.
Coming from a successful 10 year practice in Hamilton, Victoria, Kane is
delighted to join his family in Barwon Heads as a committed and involved
community member.
From his home in Furneaux Close Barwon Heads and as we sip herbal tea,
Kane tells me of his love for his work and dedication to achieving the best result
possible for all of his clients, indeed after only a few months, he has built up a
good local client base.
Kane treats all age groups and is also working with the BHFNClub.
Post natal is another particular interest of Kanes as he believes women can
sometimes sacrifice their own health for the sake of their baby at a time when
they most need a healthy balance.
Kane loves the warm friendly feel that village life offers and is enthusiastic about
his role within this community (and he loves Starfish muffins!)
Kane is also opening a clinic at 14 Tuckfield Street in Ocean Grove and will look
forward to seeing clients from there.
You can contact Kane on the number below for an appointment.

BARWON HEADS URBAN FIRE BRIGADE

Responding to call outs

Barwon Heads Fire Brigade has responded to 29

call outs so far this year in and around Barwon
Heads, Ocean Grove and Connewarre.
A recent call out was to a fire on a power pole near the
corner of Geelong and Sheepwash Roads.
The transformer on the pole combusted and large
electrical sparks were seen from the top section of the
pole. The CFA along with other emergency services
attended the incident.

favourite tv program or about to have dinner.

Such situations remind us to prepare in advance. There
are a few things we can do in the home to make sure that
even if the lights go out, we can still find our way around.
The precursor to the power going out is a pulsating of the
lights; if you notice straight away you'll have seconds if
not a couple of minutes to get into action. Go to the loo
and grab your torch. Keep matches and candles handy
too. Always keep a torch close by and regularly check
the battery to make sure it works.

And while the power is out, your gas connection will still
work so you can run the heating or continue cooking
dinner albeit carefully! Dinner then becomes a candlelit
affair quite romantic in the right circumstances.
Barwon Heads Fire Brigade has a Facebook page
informing you of local community safety events and
insights to what the Brigade is up to. Make sure you jump
on and give us a like to follow what we are up to!
The Barwon Heads Fire Brigade is seeking new
members. If you are interested in learning new skills,
meeting new people and being part of a team that
contributes to the safety of our community, please call
Captain Tony Hodder on 0419 546 347, or email
Secretary Andy Halnon on andrew.halnon@gmail.com

If you are on the road near a sparking power pole and you
notice the lights go out, pull over away from the power
lines (never park under them) and dial 000 to alert
emergency services. Drive with caution and if you are in
an area with traffic lights be mindful that these are also
likely to be out.

As a result of the transformer combusting many Barwon

Heads residents were without power until the power
company had repaired the transformer.

occur at night time when you're settled in watching a

Barwon Heads Community Garden

It has been another big
month down at the
gardens with plans for
citrus circle coming to
fruition. We've had such
a good crop of lemons
this year and felt it
time to dress the area
up a little with a fresh
load of Lilydale
toppings, giving the
area a somewhat
Mediterranean feel.
We also noted that tomato seedlings had begun to
emerge from the un-cropped soil along the edge of
the poly-tunnell, not at all deterred by the colder
weather and with it came the idea to rework this area
to allow for early spring plantings. Plans of the redesigned tunnel have been drawn up and it is time to
get busy. Instead of having such long propagation
tables that extend the full length of the tunnel,
garden beds along each side of the main entrance
will now create a productive path up to a more
condensed and practical propagation area. The
intention is to take advantage of the warmer
environment to grow veggies for all members to
enjoy.
At the recent committee meeting we also saw a draft
mud-map of the new kids play area to be
constructed adjacent to the pizza oven, a much
better use of space and the chance to revamp our
kids play facilities. Thanks again to the Barwon

MEET THE AUTHORS - Sunday

the Authors for 2015. We have an exciting Trio of

authors to present on September 20th. The first is
Dr. Don Watson , who will talk about his latest and
much talked about book The Bush, which has
recently taken out several prestigious prizes.
These include two Indie Awards as overall winner
and also for non-fiction; the NSW Premier's Book
of the Year, and the Douglas Stewart Prize for
Nonfiction. The Bush is causing much interest and
a little controversy and it is said that 'no-one who
reads this book will look at this country the same
way again'. It is also said to unravel many myths
about the Australian bush. The second author ,
Alan Gold, will discuss his intriguing book Bell of
the Desert, the story of an English woman
Gertrude Bell and her fascinating years in Iraq in
the times of her friend T.E.Lawrence. A film of this
book is shortly to be released starring Nicole
Kidman. Gertrude Bell was considered one of the
most powerful women in England in her day. Born
in 1868, and after reading history at Oxford, she
became an archaeologist and the rest as they
say Our third speaker Trisha Dixon Burkitt will
talk about her most recent book Adagio: Living
and Gardening Mindfully. Her research into the life
and landscape designs of Edna Walling has
resulted in a number of books, articles and a
consultancy on the famous landscape artist.

Trisha also leads Garden and Photography Tours

of Europe on a regular basis and we hope she will
tell us about those also. She also leads tours to the
island of Hydra in the Greek Islands for
photographic and literary workshops. She is a pilot
and has been a presenter on ABC TV. Trisha will be
a delightful way to wind up what is shaping up to
being a fascinating and illuminating day! Bookings

News from the Beaches and Coastal Environs

Our Committee members are local

consideration of the skills and
experience that they have to offer
in the management of this
important piece of coastline.
LITTER ACTION
This month Barwon Coast
representatives attended the Victorian
Litter Action Alliance (VLAA) Local Litter
Measurement Toolkit training day that
was supported by Bellarine Catchment
Networks Caring for Our Bays State
Government funded project. The training
provided staff with increased access to
best practice data collection techniques to
inform management of litter and illegal
dumping, and conduct cost benefit
analysis to improve local litter prevention
projects. The methods applicable will
also be used in our schools environmental
education programs. The day also
provided networking opportunity with a
range of other agencies, schools and
community groups.
All data collected will be entered into the
VLAA database.

Barwon Coast staff Ben Mills and James
Pender, pictured at left, expect to have
the board walk completed in the coming
weeks. When complete it will provide a
resilient section of the walk better suited
to the coming and going of riverbank
sand; allowing walkers and cyclists
continuing access along one of our great
paths.
I encourage you to contact Barwon Coast
to discuss any issues related to coastal
management in our region by phoning

Notes from Bali...

Nearly everything I was warned about didnt happen...no sick tummy, no dodgy money
changers, no being hassled...well, unless you include one early morning walk along Sanur
beach where a young pregnant Balinese, falling into step with me, engaged me in friendly
chat. Dressed in jogging clothes and in beautiful English she asked me all the right
questions and appeared interested in the answers. We walked for a few mintes then she
steered me into a lane and into her shop where I was convinced to be her first lucky customer for the day. By
now I was onto her and, playing the game, allowed the clever little minx to sell me three tops for 300,000RP
(about $30). I beat her down from 600,000RP. As I was leaving, she asked me for an Aussie gold coin and
smiling, I gave her two $1s. They melt them down and make jewellery. A bit of fun and I really love the tops
despite seeing them later in Hardys department store for 58,000RP each, about $17.40!

algae called

kelps
These large plants attach themselves to solid structures such as
rock, and extend their leaves into the waters above them, reaching
towards the sunlight. These larger algae in turn create a habitat for
smaller algae and a wealth of animals that can either live attached
to the rocks beneath the kelps, on the kelps themselves, or in the
sheltered waters between individual plants.
In the same way that trees provide shelter and food for many
different species, kelp forests are the true forests of the sea.
Because the kelp forest has a dense canopy of blades blocking
out light, it can result in shading of the rock surface providing an
ideal environment for an understorey of encrusting algae and
non-moving animals.
Kelp species populating these forests include Giant Kelp
(Macrocystis angustifolia) and Bull Kelp (Durvillea potatorum).
Animals that make their home in kelp forests are Eastern Rock
Lobster (Jasus edwardii), Black Lipped Abalone (Haliotis rubra)
and Old Wife (Enoplosus armatus).
Unfortunately in recent years the Giant Kelp forests off the
Barwon Bluff have been greatly diminished. Macrocystis
angustifolia is now listed for protection.

Barwon Heads Cricket Club

So we're well and truly over
the hump of the winter now.

Not that it has warmed up to any appreciable extent, but

the days are a little longer and there's just the smallest
amount of zing in the limited amount of sunlight we might
get in a still afternoon. Even the timid dandy horsemen of
the faux BHCC, who hardly venture out in the cold, have
begun to slow the traffic again ten abreast on the bridge.
Cricket is still a little way off, but preparations are well
under way for the new season. Junior coaches have
been named and the new committee is in place. I'm
writing this a few weeks before the AGM, but as you read,
the new committee has been elected.
During the winter the players and assorted luminaries of
the club have been busy with an array of activities which
have as little as possible to do with cricket. I've seen them
at the footy and walking dogs and or the children on the
beach. You can be sure that there are pergolas, fire pits
and garden beds being built and the odd gearbox getting
a recondition or a deck getting a long overdue coat of oil.
Winter is a wonderful time to reacquaint yourself with the
normal world. And the ashes are on telly too.
Now there are a lot of other sports that can be played in
the winter and for those that don't have the inclination for
sport, there's the watching and critique and remark on
sport. Such a group of on-looking commentators are a
group of troubadours known as the Coodabeen
Champions. For the uninitiated, the Coodabeens have a
mostly football based radio show during the footy season
which observes and comments on many aspects of the
game, but takes great measures to avoid any reference
to the actual playing of the game. In the non-AFL season,
the lads also have a national Saturday evening variety
program called The Saturday Soiree. In a few different
personnel incarnations, including for most of their tenure

the oracle of Bell Street, and on a number of different

stations the Coodabeens have been a part of the footy
scene for 35 years now and have embarked on a tour of
the country to celebrate.
There are a number of the more mature members of the
BHCC who have followed the Coodabeens since they
were younger and decided to attend the first show of the
tour in Geelong recently. Arriving at the GPAC well before
the appointed time of the performance with the intention of
partaking in a cool beverage and a chat before the show,
these four fellows found themselves confronted with a
room where, despite their seniority in cricketing terms,
they were in the younger ten percent. Not only this, but
they also found themselves with almost exclusive access
to the bar and despite the outrageous prices, they were
there to have a beverage and by golly that's what they
intended to do.
And then one of their number saw it.
It was not pretentious or outlandish in its presentation, not
terribly large and no effort had been made to draw any
attention to it. Yet there it was. A sign, rather, more like a
poster. Black lettering on white in an easy font in capital
letters. It was something he'd never seen before and he
could barely believe his eyes so he read it again and again.
Three, maybe four times he read the words, but there was
no mistaking what it said.

PATRONS ARE ADVISED THAT IT IS

PERMITTED TO TAKE DRINKS INSIDE THE
THEATRE.

He could barely hold back a tear from rolling down his

cheek. And it wasn't an invitation that our young men were
going to dishonour either so they took just the one they
were holding into the auditorium when the curtain was
raised.
During the show, in a room full of senior citizens, during the
first half there were only four people who left the room to

attend the amenities. The four young old blokes from

Barwon Heads.
In other news, there are other members who are not
players, but for whom the winter still presents opportunity
to try out new sports. This is true of one of the junior
players' mothers in Indy McCulloch who has taken up
golf and has only been playing for about three weeks.
Many readers will remember in the movie Karate Kid
where Mr. Miyagi is trying to catch a fly with chopsticks
and his pupil Daniel asks if he can have a go. Miyagi say
that, ..a man who can accomprish catch fry with
chopstick accomprish anything. He then tells Daniel
how he's never done in his long lifetime. Of course Daniel
then catches a fly within three or four tries. Miyagi then
exclaims, You have beginner ruck! Well in the best
traditions of Danialsun it would seem that our Indy has
achieved a hole in one on the beach course at Thirteenth
Beach. We congratulate Indy on her good fortune, but
believe me Indy golf will be all down hill from there.
Lastly let me tell you that I have an awful time some
months trying to get stuff for this column. After a night like
the Coodabeens it writes itself, but many months I have
difficulty and writers block is a real hazard. Spare a
thought for the local who has recently taken to social
networking and has taken to writing a Thought of the
week each Sunday on social media. Given that having
one thought a week is a bit of a stretch for this fellow and
having a thought that's fit for public consumption is a
fantasy almost literally. I admire his good form thus far
though as there has been some great wisdom so far and I
encourage him to keep it up. Not least of which reason
being that I'm going to end up pinching one or more of his
ideas eventually.
More on cricket next month.
Matt Dunell

BARWON HEADS CYCLING CLUB

the night before and

readyPacked
to go, I had finished my

breaky and was enjoying my early

morning coffee.
A text and the tone told me it was BHCC rider, Wiggle out
the front and ready to escort me along Thirteenth Beach
Road for the start of my eleventh Victory Cycling Tour.
Wiggle and I rode along side of the beach as I headed
towards Marshall Station. I could hardly keep up with
him as we reached speeds of up to 25 km/h. Slow down
Wiggo, I was puffing. I was carrying a lot of weight; tent,
sleeping bag, sleeping mat, cycling clothes, casual
clothes, wet weather gear and more. We were greeted
by Graeme and Big Nick who were heading back to
Barwon Heads for their coffee. Wiggle did a U-turn and
left me to make my way to the train to meet Jeff in
Melbourne.
When Jeff and I go cycle touring, we are self sufficient,
both carrying all our sleeping gear, clothes, tool kits, first
aid and riding gear. I take the tent and Jeff takes care of
the cooking equipment and we buy all our food and wine
for each night along the way. Jeff is a qualified and
brilliant chef which is a great reason to ride with him.
Each year we do a 3 to 4 day ride somewhere in Victoria,
except for the last tour when we rode the east coast of
Tasmania. We have been doing this for over a decade,
always looking to discover something new. Following is
a summary of our recent ride in southern Gippsland.
Tuesday: Train from Marshall to Southern Cross, then
the Traralgon train. Jeff joined me in Caulfield. We
disembarked in Drouin and started riding. It wasn't long
before we had to stop to put on more gear; warmer
gloves, head bands, vests. It was cold and the down hill
rolls were even colder. The roads were wet, the wind
was blowing and there were many grey clouds. But, then
again, what could we expect when riding in Gippsland in
the middle of winter. We only had a short ride planned for
day one. Up and down many hills through luscious green
farmland and on to Poowong where we topped up our
limited supplies for the evening. We then cycled a further
3 or 4 kilometres to Bass Valley Camping Ground.
I set up the tent while Jeff started gathering wood. I then
joined my mate collecting firewood and we were busy for
over an hour we were ready for a cold night and a
campfire would be the only way I was planning to stay
warm. As the fire started, we were joined by a local
named Jess; a guitar maker from Loch. We chatted for
hours as we finished our cider and moved on to a
McLaren Vale shiraz to keep us warm while Jeff cooked
a bolognese sauce with cous cous. Jess loved to talk
and kept us both entertained with his tails and antics. A
memorable night was had by the fire before retreating to
bed to fall fast asleep in an instant.
Wednesday: It rained throughout the night and we woke
early and packed up. I was the unlucky rider who got to
carry the wet tent, adding an extra kilogram of weight (or
so I thought anyway). We headed south and rode
through Bena where we had our muesli, then on to
Krowera, Ryanston, Archies Creek, Ryanston and
Dalyston. Lots of hills, drizzle and plenty of westerly
winds to make things worse. My feet were wet and
numb. At some stages throughout the day, I was wearing
five layers of clothing. We eventually made it through the
hills before joining the Bass Coast Rail Trail and heading
west to Kilkunda for lunch. Egg and bacon panini and hot
chocolate and I started to warm up. Back on the bikes
towards San Remo where we had a break before
crossing the bridge to Philip Island. The road to Cowes
was covered on a bike track that followed the busy
highway. The only issue was the strengthening westerly
winds as we completed the days ride. Destination for the
second night was the Cowes Caravan Park. Boiling hot

showers followed by a spicy Morrocan broth in the

camp kitchen. I was finally warming up. After some
discussion and solving the problems of the world, it was
finally time for some well earned sleep.
Thursday: After a wild stormy night, we woke early and
decided to get moving to catch the 8.30 ferry across
Western Port Bay. As I put the tent into my rear pannier,
I was relieved that my decision to pack up early was a
good one when it started pouring. We waited for a break
then headed to the jetty to meet the ferry. It was only us
and another passenger who braved the boarding on the
pier (we were both relieved that our bikes actually made
it onto the boat). The bay was so rough that the captain
could not stop at French Island: Too dangerous, was
the call. Once at Stony Point, we disembarked and had
to spend nearly an hour sheltering from the downpour in
the train station. It was very tempting to board the train
for Frankston, but we knew the rain would eventually
subside and once it did, we got back on our bikes and
headed towards our lunch stop at the Cellar and Pantry
in Red Hill South. We stocked up on local red wines and
cheeses to take to our host in Main Ridge.
After our break and a flat tyre repair, we rode to Mossy
Willlow Farm in Main Ridge (or Main Fridge as the
locals call it in winter). Once we climbed the steep
driveway in our 'granny gear', Simon greeted us and we
went straight for the open fire and a warm cuppa. Our
shoes took pole position in an attempt to dry. Simon
showed us around the farm with his dog Leah close by
his side. It was wonderful to hear from someone who
had found his passion accountant turned organic farm
manager. The farm tour took well over an hour but the
time raced by as I was so engaged and interested in the
discussions that were taking part between the three of
us.
Once back at the farmhouse, we were treated to some
of Simon's home brews and let me tell you, these were
not any ordinary beers; they were outstanding. We
soon moved on to the local red wines and were treated
to Simon's amazing hickory smoked barbequed beef
ribs. This was truly a memorable meal. The beef was
slow-cooked in a barbie that looked like a burnt out R2D2. But the flavours were outstanding and the meat
was tender and juicy. I can still smell and taste the
hickory when I think about it. This was followed by some
great cheese and Jeff's sourdough that was still fresh
after 3 days! Bed was a real bed tonight no tent, no
self-inflating mattress. Luxury.
Friday: An early start again as we said our farewells to
our host and rode off to Johnny Ripe for a filling egg and
bacon roll by an open fire place. This was washed down
with a caf latte before Jeff and I parted company. Jeff
was heading back to Melbourne and I was riding
towards Sorrento. There were plenty of hills, but today
most of them were downhill. Once I reached the coast,
another westerly slowed me as I headed towards
home. A cruise along the wide bike lane of the Nepean
Highway to the ferry and once on board, a rest in the
warm and dry lounge before reaching Queenscliff.
Last part of the journey was the ride home through the
Bellarine Peninsula. I decided to take the bike paths for
the final part of the journey and was rewarded by
bumping into the Ramages as they were off an an
family bike expedition.
Not long after, I was warming in the shower before
unpacking the kilos of gear that needed washing and
drying before being packed away for another year.
Thanks for another fabulour ride Jeff. You are always
great company and I look forward to the next tour. We
have even talked about a family tour let's hope we can
pull it off

July 20th sees the Under 16s sitting 2nd on the ladder
with a 9 win 4 loss ratio.
Playing South Barwon at South Barwon they had a 41
point win which was set up after a strong first half.
Zedekai Copland with 5 goals was the major goal
scorer.
Best players: M Witherden, Z. Copland, S. Harris, C.
Sprague, Z. Walter, L. Reekie.
Next game was Drysdale at home.
Controlling the game from the first bounce we went into
the first break 34 points up. A great team effort ended up
with a 90 point win.
Best players: L. Reekie, Z. Walter, M. Witherden, N.
McMahon, P. Richards.
After a couple of weeks off due to school holidays we
were at home to Bell Park.
Zedekai Copland with 9 goals helped the team to a 20
point win.
Best players: Z. Copland, N. Sutton, N. Young, L.
Hooper, L. Reekie, F. Guina-Stannard.
After 12 rounds of footy the Colts are 6th on the ladder
with 7 wins & 5 losses.
Round 10 saw them take the long trip out to Colac a new
experience for most of the boys. After an even first half
we gradually got on top of the opposition, William Ford
kicking 5 goals helped them to a 32 win.
Best players: L. Holloway, B. Michell, C. McKinnon,
W. Ford, J. Ollis, B. Ryan.
Round 11 had them travel into Newtown.
Another even first half had them well placed for another
victory. Newtown had other ideas and kicked away in
the last quarter to record a 31 point win.
Best players: B. Michell, T. Croft, M. Beckwith, W.
Armstrong, C. Balshaw, D. Hewitt.

Round 12 at home to Ocean Grove. Although sitting on

the bottom of the ladder Ocean Grove made our boys
work had for the 19 point win.
Best players: W. Ford, B. Michell, T. Croft, M. Philp,
B. Eddy, T. Blair.
Round 11 saw the Seniors & Reserves at home to
Anglesea.
The Reserves struggled in the first half only registering
2.5. The second half was a more productive half; the
final margin of 52 points was a good result. The Seniors
broke the game open after time kicking 7.2 to 1 point in
the second quarter. Wizz playing in the unfamiliar role
of centre half forward kicked 4 for the day, as did Sachin.
The 79 point margin at the end was indication of the
endeavor throughout the game.
Round 12 we travelled into Newcomb.
34 goals were kicked by both the Ressies and the
Seniors .
Corey Normington 9, Kyle Johannesen 8 were the
main contributors for the Ressies and Jimmy Taylor 7,
Johnny Read 6, Ed Mitchell 5 were the main ones for
the Seniors.
Round 13 was Battle of the Bridge at home.
The Ressies going into the game undefeated were
warm favourites. Unfortunately they suffered their first
loss of the year.
Tom Jackson and Sam Peter down back tried hard.
The Seniors blew the game open after time Ocean
Grove could only manage 1.3 for the half whereas we
kicked 8.16. The 68 point margin could have been
greater if we were more accurate in front of goal, Jesse
Mawson as with his other mates down back were
fantastic. You would have to go a long way to find a
better back 6 than ours.
The club would like to thank all the supporters that
turned up it was another bonanza day for the club.
The Black Tie Ball was a huge success everybody
that attended said it was the best footy function they
have been too. Congratulations Clarkey & Bec all
the hard work paid off. Well done also to our well
know life member who took out B.O.G. for the night.
Although not playing with us this year a local product
made the Under 19s rep side for Vic Country.
Well done Hayden Smith.

move towards finishing the 2015
season. Most exciting is the prospect
of having a number of our teams
featuring in the finals probably more
than we have enjoyed for a few years.
D Grade continue to look strong and are a definite finals
contender. They are not resting on their laurels though
and Bec is still working hard with the girls to ensure they
maintain their strong position. With B Grade currently in
equal 4th on the ladder, they too need to maintain their
focus if they want to keep their place on the ladder and a
spot in the finals.
The outstanding work that our coaches are doing with
the juniors is clear as we look at the ladders for all
divisions, with nearly all of our teams sitting in the top
four. Amongst them are our U17 Division 1 team in
second place (equal first on points). If they continue to
play as well as they did again Ocean Grove recently
they will be cruising into September. With finals a
definite possibility for most of our junior teams, the final
four home and away rounds are bound to bring with
them some exciting matches for both our players and
spectators.
Our Tuesday and Friday night junior teams are also
playing well despite the icy conditions. It is great to see
how much they are improving week, particular our U11
girls, many of which are playing their first season of
netball for the club. Our U11 coaches are doing a
wonderful job, providing the girls with a great foundation
for their future years in netball. This is not only about
learning ball skills but about understanding what it is to
be part of a team, to listen to their coaches and most
importantly to have some fun.

Plans are in progress for the vote

counts and club presentation night so
stay tuned for news relating to this.
While we are, in a sense, winding down, there is still
plenty happening at the netball club and we would love
to finish our season on a really strong note. Yes, it is
cold and miserable, but it would be great to see
everyone down to support our girls through to the end of
the season.
