FollowingtheworkofEdmundHusserl,Merleau
Ponty'sprojectistorevealthephenomenological
structureofperception.However,MerleauPonty's
conceptionsofphenomenology,andforthatmatter
thedialectic,donotpreciselyfollowthoseofHusserl
orMartinHeidegger.
MerleauPonty'scentralthesisiswhathelatercalled
the"primacyofperception."Wearefirstperceiving
theworld,thenwedophilosophy.Thisentailsa
critiqueoftheCartesiancogito,resultinginalargely
differentconceptofconsciousness.TheCartesian
dualismofmindandbodyiscalledintoquestionas
ourprimarywayofexistingintheworldandis
ultimatelyrejectedinfavorofanintersubjective
conceptionordialecticalandintentionalconceptof
consciousness.Whatischaracteristicofhisaccountof
perceptionisthecentralitythatthebodyplays.We
perceivetheworldthroughourbodiesweare
embodiedsubjects,involvedinexistence.
