OF

SSION
At that time, our Lord Jesus said: ...whoever desires to come after Me, let
him deny himself, and take up his Cross, and follow Me. Whoever
desires to save his life will lose it. Whoever loses his life for My sake,
and the Gospels, will Save it. For what will it profit a man if he gains
the whole world, and loses his soul? Or what will a man give in
exchange for his soul?
Whoever is ashamed of Me and My Words in this adulterous and sinful
generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes
in the Glory of His Father with the Holy Angels.
And He said to them: Truly, I say to you: there are some standing here who
will not taste Death until they see the Kingdom of God present with
Power!

SAVIOUR, JESUS C
HRIST
Brethren, knowing that a man is not Justified by the Works of the Law, but by
the Faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we
might be Justified by the Faith of Christ, and not by the works of the Law;
for by the works of the Law no flesh shall be Justified.
If, while we seek to be Justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found to be
sinners, is therefore Christ the Minister of sin? God forbid!
If I build again the things that I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor.
I through the Law died to the Law, that I might Live in God. With Christ I
am crucified. Nevertheless, I live! Christ Lives in me! The Life in the flesh,
I Live in the Faith of the Son of God, Who Loves me, and gave Himself for
me.

Having lost everything that was so dear to him, St Eustathios wept bitterly,
but he realized that Divine Providence had sent him these misfortunes to
test his Endurance and Devotion to God.
Despite his inconsolable grief, St Eustathios continued his Pilgrimage to
Jerusalem, prepared for new tribulations.
In the village of Badessos he found employment and spent five years in
unremitting toil.
Unknown to St Eustathios, by the Divine Grace and Great Mercy of God,
Shepherds and Farmers had saved his sons, and they lived in the same
vicinity as their grieving Father.
Furthermore, the impudent, lustful and wicked ship-owner had been struck
down with a terrible disease and died, leaving St Theopiste untouched
and safe at last living peacefully and free at the final destination of
the ship.
It had become difficult for Emperor Trajan to raise an army for Rome to
deal with a rebellion, because the soldiers refused to go into battle
without their beloved Commander, Placidas.
They had boldly
demanded that Emperor Trajan organised and authorised an intensive
search in all the cities, towns and villages to find him.
Antiochos and Akakios, who were close friends of Placidas, searched
everywhere for him until they finally arrived in the village where St
Eustathios lived. They failed to recognize him and began to tell him of
the Roman Commander whom they sought, asking his help and
promising a large reward.
Meanwhile St Eustathios had instantly recognized his old friends, yet he
decided not to reveal his identity to them. Instead he borrowed a little
money from one of his new acquaintances and fed his old friends.
As they looked at him, both Antiochos and Akakios noticed that he
resembled their former Commander, and when they saw a scar on his
shoulder from an old, deep battle wound, they realized that it was
indeed their long lost friend! They tearfully they embraced him and told
him why they were seeking him.
St Eustathios returned to Rome with them and again became their
respected and beloved Commander.
Many new recruits were drafted into the Roman army from all over the
Empire, and without his realisation, two young soldiers who served him,
and whom he loved for their great skill and courage, were actually his
own two sons.
Neither did they realise that they were serving under the command of their
own beloved Father, nor did they know that they were biological
brothers.
While on campaign, the army led by St Eustathios halted at a certain
settlement, and the two brothers began talking in their tent.
The elder Brother spoke about his life - how he had lost his Mother and
Brother - and how in a terrifying way he had been parted from his
Father.
The younger brother suddenly became aware that the other soldier was
truly his very own brother, and with much excitement and joy, he told
him how he had been rescued from the ravenous jaws of the wolf.
A woman overheard the two soldiers conversation, since their tent was
pitched right next to her house, and she instantly knew that these young
men were her sons!
Not wanting to shock them by identifying herself, but also not wanting to be
separated from them again, St Theopiste went to their Commander, St
Eustathios, to request his permission to accompany them to Rome.
She explained to him that she had been a kidnapped prisoner, and
wanted to return to her home.

3.
While still speaking, she began to recognise her beloved husband and with
great sobs and tears of Joy, she identified herself and told him
everything that had occurred since they had last seen each other.
She also joyfully told him about his two favourite soldiers, who were
actually their sons who had recently reunited as brothers.
Thus, through the infinite Compassion and Great Mercy of our Lord, the
whole family was happily reunited.
Shortly thereafter the rebellion was crushed, and St Eustathios returned to
Rome with honour and glory.
Emperor Trajan had been succeeded by Emperor Hadrian (117-138) who
wanted to celebrate their Victory with a solemn offering of sacrifices to
the gods but to the astonishment of everyone, St Eustathios - the
popular and successful Commander - was not in attendance at the
pagan temple.
Emperor Trajan ordered him to be located and brought before him, and
when St Eustathios did finally appear, he was asked to explain the
reason for neither attending not sacrificing to the gods at the temple.
The Emperor commented: You, above all others, ought to offer thanks to
them. They not only preserved you in war and granted you victory, but
also they helped you to find your wife and children.
St Eustathios boldly replied: I am a Christian and I Glorify and give Thanks
to Jesus Christ, and I offer sacrifice to Him alone! I owe my Life to Him. I
do not know nor believe in any other god but Him!
The shocked and enraged Emperor ordered him to immediately remove his
military belt (similar to a Dishonourable Discharge from the Roman
Army) and further ordered that St Eustathios and his recently reunited
family be brought before him to face charges of Treason against the
Roman Empire!
Nothing and no one could convince nor persuade any of these Steadfast
Confessors of Christ to offer sacrifice to the gods or the dead, man-made
idols.
Consequently, St Eustathios and his family were sentenced to death by
being thrown into a small enclosure to be torn apart by wild, starving
beasts.
Yet, by the Grace of God, the animals did not go near the Holy Martyrs, and
ignored them altogether. So the merciless, cruel Emperor issued orders
to hurl them into a red-hot brass bull, where St Eustathios, his wife St
Theopiste, and their sons, St Agapios and St Theopistos endured a
terrible Martyrdom, but just before going to their death, St Eustathios
prayed aloud: Grant, O Lord, Thy Grace to our relics, and grant to
those who call upon us a place in Thy Kingdom. Those who call upon
us when they are in danger on a river or at sea, we Entreat Thee to
come to their aid.
Three days later, the executioners opened the brass bull, and the bodies of
the Holy Martyrs were found to be totally unscathed! Not one hair on
their heads was singed, and their faces shone with an Unearthly Beauty.
Thos who witnessed this Great Miracle believed and accepted our Saviour
Jesus Christ as their Lord God.
Other Faithful Christians claimed the Holy Relics of St Eustathios and his
Righteous Family, and buried their incorrupt bodies with all due
reverence and respect.
May their memories be Eternal and may they ceaselessly Intercede with
Christ our Lord for the sake of our Eternal Salvation.
