LOADSTAR - Introduction

Introducing LOADSTAR
Highlights of LOADSTAR
LOADSTAR is an advanced loading computer with a very user-friendly interface. It
facilitates the often time-consuming process of planning and controlling conditions.
LOADSTAR from IBM is designed to be fast and easy to use. It has been designed in cooperation with leading shipping companies throughout the world. Thus, it has gained the
benefit of the valuable experience of these companies. The outcome is a loading system,
which integrates all necessary functions into a single program.
The many practical system features of LOADSTAR ensure quick and accurate cargo
planning, concerning both rough pre-planning and detailed planning.
LOADSTAR has a clear and consistent design, supplying the necessary information at a
glance. Only a few keystrokes or mouse clicks are required to make it function.
Therefore, LOADSTAR reduces operation time and man-hour requirements to an
absolute minimum.

Use of Mouse and Keyboard

LOADSTAR follows the common Windows standard for use of mouse and keyboard. In
most cases you can use both the mouse and the keyboard to move around in the dialog
boxes and views. In a few cases you have to use a combination of mouse and keyboard,

LOADSTAR - Introduction

Testing of the Loading Computer

We recommend that you test your loading computer frequently to ensure that it calculates
correctly. To do so, load the test conditions and compare the results with the approved
test conditions.

Longitudinal Strength and Stability

Longitudinal Strength
The primary purpose of the loading computer is to secure that the limits for longitudinal
strength given by the classification society are not exceeded. There are limits for seagoing
conditions as well as harbour conditions. You switch between these limits using <F4>
key. You can see the limits by choosing the Limits topic under the View topic in the
menu bar.
Each time a weight is entered into LOADSTAR a complete new calculation of the
condition is performed. After having found the draughts, heel and trim, the shear force,
bending moments and the torsion are calculated. The calculation results are compared to
the limits. The actual values on each of the calc stations can be obtained from the
Limits view mentioned before. You are also able to see the relative use of the limits on
the stations represented as a percentage of the max allowable value. If the calculations
exceed 100% the digits showing the shear force, bending moment and torsion max
percentages in the Condition Status view are colored red. Further the strength indicator in
the Status bar in the bottom of the LOADSTAR windows turn red.
Non of these checks require any other operator action than typing in the weight item.

Intact Stability
To secure that the intact stability fulfils the IMO requirements in all conditions the
LOADSTAR checks these requirements every time weight is entered into the program.
These checks do not require any interaction from the operator. If one of the requirements
is not fulfilled the stability indicator in the Status bar in the bottom of the LOADSTAR
windows turns red.
Further the digits showing GM in the Condition Status view are colored red if the GM
required is not fulfilled.
To see the actual GZ curve choose the topic GZ curve from View in the menu bar.

LOADSTAR - Introduction

A Guided Tour
Purpose
The purpose of this section is to explain the functionality of LOADSTAR to first time
users. We will guide you through the basic steps of using LOADSTAR.
You are going on a test voyage from Port AAA to Port BBB. While staying at Port AAA
you are going to plan the condition of the vessel in LOADSTAR.
We suggest that you follow the examples by actually doing the exercises on your own
PC, thus gaining hands-on experience with the program. You are requested to follow the
instructions as carefully as possible, as you will enter data into your own LOADSTAR
program. LOADSTAR then calculates the current values of strength and stability of the
condition.
Note: This Guided Tour is a general introduction to LOADSTAR, whereas the Reference
part in Part II of the manual deals specifically with your vessel. Therefore there can be
some minor differences between how the system is described in this Guided Tour and
how it works on your vessel. If you need advice concerning your vessel, use the
Reference part of the manual in Part II.
You will try to work with tanks and containers, and create port codes.

Import / Export of Port Code Tables
LOADSTAR is designed to handle multiple port code tables. This provides the user with
the option to create port code tables matching the ports of call for the actual trade or leg
of the voyage.
To Import (or Export) port code tables select "Port Code (*.PCD)" in the "Files of Types"
("Save as Type") list box in the Import (Export) dialog box.
When a LOADSTAR condition is saved the name of the port code file is saved along
with the condition.
Next time the condition is opened LOADSTAR automatically imports that particular port
code file. This import can result in a replacement of the port code file currently being
used in LOADSTAR. The replaced port code table will be saved automatically prior to
the import operation.
When LOADSTAR starts up the last port code table used will be imported automatically.
If no port code tables are found when LOADSTAR starts up an empty port code file
named WINLOAD.PCD is automatically generated. This file is located in the BIN folder
where LOADSTAR is installed.
How to attach a port code table to a condition file:
1. Open the LOADSTAR condition
2. Create or import the port code table
3. Export the port code file
4. Save the LOADSTAR condition
The name of the port code table is shown in the title of the port code dialog box.

Load Containers
Now you are going to load some containers onto the vessel. Move the cursor to the cell in
bay 01, row 01, tier 82.
Press Enter and the dialog box opens. Here you can enter information about the
containers. The first information to be typed is the container weight.
The height of the container is set to the standard value of 8'6", but can be changed to for
instance 9'6". The destination is the three-letter code from the port list above. Both the
height and the port codes are selected from a drop down list. You can only select between
the heights and ports defined.
Type the following information in the window:
The container is to be placed in bay 01, row 01 and tier 82:
Weight 20.0 tons
Height of 9'6"
Destination is BBB
The loading port is AAA
Press Enter
The window is removed and the new container weight is displayed.
Note that the cell has turned light blue to match the destination BBB. Note also that the
weight and height of the stack have changed.
Move a Container
Try to move a container. While the cursor is still pointing on the container just loaded,
press Shift+Delete. Now you have removed the container to the clipboard. Using the
arrow keys you can move the cursor to the cell to the right of the one you worked on
before. Press Shift+Insert, and the container is inserted into that cell.
Remove a Container
It is also easy to remove a container. While the cursor is on the container just moved,
press the Delete key. The container will then be removed. You can also do this with the
mouse, but this is not dealt with here.
Next Step
In order to make the operating of LOADSTAR as quick as possible, there is an easier way
to load containers onto a vessel once you are more familiar with the system. This is done
by using the commands H (horizontal) and V (vertical). Please go to step 5 on the next
page.

torsion moments (TM) to be displayed in the diagram. The values shown next to
the text are the current SF, BM and TM percentages of the actual limits.
Curve Colors
Each curve is easily identified since it matches the color of the curve name. The
red-colored SF name, for example, indicates that the red-colored curve in the
diagram is the shear-force curve.
Switching Curves on/off
To switch off a curve, click on its name and watch the curve disappear from the
diagram. Click once more to switch it on again.
Harbour/Sea Mode
You can also switch between harbour and sea mode by pressing F4 or by clicking
once with the right mouse key. A pop-up menu is displayed, and here you can
select the mode you want.
The Ballast Tanks
The Graphical Tank View is displayed below the Stress Curve View and it shows a
graphical representation of the tanks for each tank group. Here the ballast tanks are
shown. The heading shows the actually shown tank group. When you open the Graphical
Tank View, the ballast tanks are always shown first. In this section we will only refer to
the ballast tanks. Updating other tanks is performed in the same way.
In order to improve the graphical view of the Graphical Tank View the entire width of the
view is used to display the tanks, even though the location of the tanks does not
completely match the Stress Curve View above. To compensate for this, tank marks are
displayed in the Stress Curve View. The two arrow-symbols represent the forward and aft
boundaries of the tank and the up arrow symbol represents the actual centre of gravity for
the tank.
For each tank, the name and current weight are shown. Below the tanks, information is
summed up for all tanks in the group: Weight and centre of gravity for the tank group.
You can switch between the various tank groups by using the Page Up and Page Down
keys. You can also click once with the right mouse button and select the wanted tank
group in the list shown in the pop-up menu.
Editing the Tanks
To start editing a tank, double-click the tank with the mouse. A dialog box opens where
you can fill in information about the tank.
You can also use the keyboard to open the edit dialog. Select the tank by means of the
arrow keys. Press Enter to open the edit dialog or just start typing the new weight and the
edit dialog will open automatically.
Use the Tab key to move around between the fields that can be updated or click the field
that you want to edit with the mouse.
Apart from the name of the tank, the following information is shown in the window:
Weight, Volume Sounding/Ullage, % fill, Density, Last Update, Max. Vol., FSM, LCG,
VCG and TCG. Furthermore two checkboxes are available namely Online and Use
Max FSM.
Only the fields Weight, Volume, Sounding/Ullage, %fill and Density can be updated.
Whenever one of these fields has been changed and the cursor is moved to another field,

LOADSTAR - Introduction
LOADSTAR recalculates the corresponding values of the tank contents including centre
of gravity and FSM. The Use Max FSM checkbox enables you to apply the maximum
possible effect of the free surface moment for the tank to the condition, disregarding the
actually filling of the tank.
Please note that if MAX FSM is selected the color shade used to indicate the % filling of
a tank is different from the color normally used.
The Online checkbox is used to include or exclude a tank from the number of tanks to be
updated by the online interface.
If the online interface is not available or the tank has not been configured in the Online
Options dialog, the checkbox is grayed.
The Last Update indicates the date and time for the last update of the tank and whether
the tank has been updated by the user or by the online interface.
When you have made your changes in a tank, click OK or press Enter to save the new
information. If you regret your changes, click Cancel or press Esc to close the dialog box
without saving your changes.
When the edit dialog has closed, the new tank weight is shown above the tank name.
Furthermore, the percentage filling of the tank is shown graphically with a colour
indication.
Tank Input Settings
This dialog box displays and handle the Tank Input Settings affecting input of data from
the Tank Overview.
Right click in the Graphical Tank View and choose Input Settings from the menu. A
dialog box opens.
How to use this Dialog Box
Enter step value for + / - key.
The step value is used for speedy input of tank weight by means of the + and the key
and can be changed either by typing a new value in the edit field or by clicking the up /
down arrows next to the edit field.
Push buttons
Three push buttons are available to define different ranges of tanks to be affected by data
input.

Input for selected tank only is the standard setting. When pushed, values entered
are applied to the presently selected tank only.

Input for all tanks in group is available to allow changing tank contents of all tanks
in a tank group in one single operation. As long as this button is pushed any change
in weight, volume, % fill, density, online and max fsm will be applied to the entire
tank group.

Input for all tanks is available for changing values for all tanks in one single
operation.

LOADSTAR - Introduction
Note when multiple tank operation is no longer required you must open the Tank Input
Settings dialog and click the "Input for selected tank only" button to return to standard
settings.
You have now tried to ballast the vessel. You can close the views or you can continue
with the views open. When ready to proceed, please go to step 7 on the next page.

Step 7: Saving the Condition

Now you are ready to save the condition you just created. Name the condition by
choosing File - Condition Info from the menu.

Condition Information Dialog Box

A dialog box opens where you can enter title, author, etc. Fill in the title and author
fields. Call the condition: "Departure AAA - BBB" and enter you name or initials in the
author field. Click OK.
Save
You can now save the condition. Choose File - Save As from the menu. A dialog box
opens where you can enter a file name for the condition and choose a directory to place
the condition in. Write GUIDTOUR and click OK. Now LOADSTAR will save the
condition on your hard disk.
The vessel has been loaded according to the condition, which has been tested by the use
of LOADSTAR. It is off to sea, heading for the next port. Please go to step 8 on the next
page.

25

LOADSTAR - Introduction

Step 8: Loading the Condition

As described under step 7, you saved the condition and departed for the next port. We
now assume that the vessel has arrived in port. The containers marked for this destination
are unloaded. Now it is time to start planning the next condition. This is done on the basis
of the condition made in the previous port.
To find the condition you saved before. Choose File - Open from the menu. Now a
dialog box opens, where you can enter the file (in this case a condition) you want to load.
Select the file name GUIDTOUR.CND. Click OK. The saved condition will now be
loaded by LOADSTAR.
You can use the saved condition to plan a new condition for the next voyage. Start by
skipping all the containers that have been unloaded in Port BBB. Choose Container Search Container from the menu.
Below is an example only, and does not show the Container Search Criteria dialog of
your LOADSTAR program.

Search Container Dialog Box

A dialog box opens where you can enter search criteria for the containers. Move the
cursor to the Destination Port field and select Port BBB from the drop down list. Now
click the Search push button. A new dialog box opens where all the containers that fulfil
the search criteria are displayed. Mark all the containers in the list and click the Delete
push button. Now the containers to Port BBB have been skipped.
Now you can want to go back again to the tabular tank view and start updating the tanks
again. This Guided Tour, however, will not take you any further, so feel free to proceed
on your own.
End of Guided Tour
This concludes the Guided Tour of LOADSTAR. You have now been led through the
most frequently used functions of the program. In order to get more information about the

Error and Warning Messages

Errors
Like in any other Windows program you will be notified when an error occurs.
LOADSTAR will show what has caused the error.
Warnings
You can also get warnings. Sometimes you will get a message box, where you can decide
whether to continue or to cancel the operation that has caused the warning. Please be
aware that in some cases you can decide to ignore the warnings, so you should be careful
with this option.
If for instance you import a BAPLIE file, you can choose OK to All or Cancel to All for
some if the warnings that occur.
Some of the warnings are visible in the Status Bar. For instance, any violation of strength
and stability will result in an indication in the Status Bar.

LOADSTAR - Introduction

Annual Program Check

Once a year the LOADSTAR program must be checked to ensure its accuracy. The check
is performed in the following way:
Load the test conditions into the LOADSTAR program one by one.
For each condition you must compare the calculation results of the program with those in
the back of this User's Guide.
If all results correspond with the calculated results, you can fill in the log on the next page
and write "OK" in the "Comments" field.
