Pacific Northwest Webquest

Source: Mr. G. Thielmann, D.P. Todd Secondary

Goals
To deepen understanding of some interesting topics
related to British Columbia and Canadas Northwest
towards the end of the 19th century, and relate their
importance with purposeful writing.
Tasks
Step One
Get a topic from the list on the following page.
Think about the topic and ask yourself if you
understand what is required.

BCs Mr. Sasquatch John Greens Bigfoot cast

collection
http://www.sasquatchodyssey.com/johngreen.jpg

Step Two
Conduct a thorough internet search for quality sites which relate to your topic. One of the stops might
be Wikipedia, but do not limit your research there or use it for your final reference. Record the url
(website address) of sources used in the References row of the table below.
Step Three
In the space below these instructions, please record your inquiry into the topic in the table entitled
research notes
Step Four
Examine your topic and explain/describe/synthesize in about 200 words. You will inform us about the
topic at a base level (summary), but you should try to relate your topic to BC and Canadian history. For
example, we dont need a lot of facts about Sasquatches, but we do need to know how the Sasquatch
legend relates to BC history: where it originated, how it blends Native and pioneer tales, and how it
affects BC today (tourism, advertising, reputation, etc.).
In other words, tell us about the topic, but also analyze why it is important or of interest to history.
Step Five
Edit your summary (please get someone else to read it and fix any problems with meaning or
grammar). Be sure to include your favorite webpages from your research in the References table below.
The webquest will be assessed as follows:

& Writing Outcome Planning &

Evidence

Developing 0-12

Meets Expectations 13-22

Exceeds Expectations 23-34

Does not understand the instructions

or topic, inquiry is random or
unoriginal, sourcework is poor

Understands the instructions and topic,

inquiry is organized and purposeful,
sourcework and use of lab-time
adequate

Builds on the instructions and topic to

create a guided and thorough inquiry;
multiple sources or perspectives,
good use of lab time

Poor notes or effort result in an

unclear inquiry; blog response is listlike or simplistic and does little to
address the webquest goals

Some clear and well-developed research

and notes result in a clear inquiry; blog
response shows an understanding of the
webquest goals and tells a good story

Clear, masterful collection of research

materials results in a skillful inquiry;
the webquest goals are very clearly
narrated and analyzed on the blog
