Combining Rules
1.

f g x f x g x

2.

Domain of (f + g) consists of the numbers that are in the domains of

both f and g. So, it will include restrictions that are in both functions.

f g x f x g x

Domain of (f g ) consists of the numbers that are in the domains of

both f and g. So, it will include restrictions that are in both functions.

Lesson 2.8 Algebra of Functions and Composition

Composition of Functions
Given two functions f and g, the composition function f g is defined by

g x f g x

To find this composition, plug the function g(x) into f(x).

The domain of f g is the set of all numbers x in the domain of g such that g(x)
is in the domain of f.
o So, the domain includes restrictions from the simplified f g expression
and restrictions from g(x).

Use f x 5x 3 and g x 3 x to evaluate the expression.
