1. Write short notes on the following:


a) Kirchoff's current law
b) Kirchoff's voltage law
c) Dependent sources
d) Independent sources. [16]

2.a) Derive an equation of induced EMF in a DC machine.


b) A 6-pole lap wound armature has 840 conductors and flux per pole of 0.018
webers. The generator is run at 1200 rpm. Calculate emf generated. [8+8]

3. A single phase 10 KVA, 2000/200 V, 50 Hz transformer has impedance drop of


10% and resistance drop of 5 %. Find the voltage regulation:
a) at full load at 0.8 power factor lagging.
b) at half the F.L at 0.6 P.f leading. [16]

4. A 3-phase, 4-pole, 50 Hz induction motor supplies a useful torque of 159 N-m.


Calculate at 5 % slip,:
a) the rotor input,
b) the motor input,
c) the motor efficiency if friction and windage losses is 500 W and the stator
losses equal to 1000 W. [16]

5. Explain with neat diagrams the general requirements of indicating instruments.

6.a) Derive an expression for ripple factor in a full-wave rectifier with resistive load.
b) Determine the value of ripple factor in the full-wave rectifier operating at 50 Hz
with a 1000 F capacitor filter and 100 Ω load. [8+8]

7. Draw diagrams indicating the biasing arrangements in P-N-P and N-P-N


transistors working in active region. [16]
8.a) Compare electrostatic deflection with magneto static deflection.
b) In a cathode ray tube having electric deflection system, the deflection plates are
2 cm long and have a uniform spacing of 4 mm between them. The fluorescent
screen is 25 cm away from the centre of the deflection plates. Calculate the
deflection sensitivity, if the potential of the final anode is
a) 1000 V
b) 2000 V and
c) 3500 V [8+8]

1.a) For an inductive circuit the applied voltage is ν (t) =Vm sinwt. Obtain the
expression for instantaneous power.
b) A capacitor of 50 µ F offers a reactance of 50 ohms against an A.C supply of
100V. Find the capacitor current and frequency of the supply. [8+8]

2.a) Write down the similarities and dissimilarities between motors and generators in
principle of operation & applications point of view.
b) The power input to a 230V dc shunt motor is 8477 KW. The field resistance is
230 ohms and armature resistance is 0.28 ohms. Find the input current, armature
current and back EMF. [8+8]

3. In a 25 KVA transformer the iron and full load copper losses are 350 W and
400 W respectively. Calculate the efficiency at:
a) Full load unity power factor.
b) Half-full load, 0.8 power factor lag. Also determine the load for
maximum efficiency. [16]

4. What do you mean by synchronous reactance of an alternator? Explain the factors


responsible for making terminal voltage of an alternator less than induced voltage.
[16]

5. An energy meter whose constant is 1200 rev. /KWH makes 10 revolutions in 20


seconds. Calculate the load in KW. [16]

6.a) Write the equation for the volt-ampere characteristics of a photodiode. Define
each term in the equation.
b) Explain the Volt-Ampere characteristics of a semiconductor photodiode. [8+8]

7.a) Derive the relations between IB, IE and IC in CB configuration?


b) Explain the laboratory setup for obtaining the CC characteristics. [8+8]

8.a) How does the sampling CRO increase the apparent frequency response of an
oscilloscope?
b) Describe the applications of CRO. [8+8]

1.a) What are the different types of energy sources used in electrical circuits? Explain
them with examples.
b) For the Figure find:

i) The current I, and


ii) The voltage across 30 ohms. [16]

2.a) Explain with neat diagram the armature reaction in DC machines.


b) A lap wound, 4-pole dc generator with 480 conductors in the armature supplies 72
amperes. The brushes are given an actual lead of 12 degrees (mechanical).
Calculate the cross-magnetizing ampere turns per pole. [8+8]

3. A 100 KVA transformer has a 94% efficiency at full load and at 50% of full load.
The power factor is unity in both cases:
a) Separate the losses
b) Determine the efficiency of the transformer for unity power factor and 75
percent of full load. [16]

4.a) With help of a neat diagram, explain the working principle of a 3-phase induction
Motor.
b) A 6-pole induction motor is fed by 3-phase, 50 Hz supply and running with a full
load slip of 3%. Find the full load speed of induction motor and also the
frequency of rotor EMF. [8+8]

5. What do you mean by Damping torque and explain the different types of damping
with neat diagrams? [16]
6.a) Explain the drift and diffusion currents for a semiconductor. State and explain
Mass-action law.
b) Compute the conductivity of a silicon semiconductor which is doped with
acceptor impurity to a density of 1022 atoms/m3.
Given that n = 1.4 × 1016/m3, µ n = 0.145 m2/V-s and µ p - 0.05 m2/V-s. [8+8]

7. Draw the two transistor model of an SCR and explain its breakdown operation.

8.a) What is ion spot in a Cathode Ray Tube using magnetic deflection system?
b) Define the “luminous efficiency” of a phosphor used in a Cathode Ray Tube?

1.a) Three equal resistances of value R ohms are connected in delta. If this is to be
replaced by an equivalent star connected resistances R1, R2 and R3. What are the
values of R1, R2 and R3 in terms of R?
b) Distinguish between ideal and practical voltage sources. Give examples of each.

a) Classification of DC generators with examples
b) Internal & External characteristics of DC generators
c) Self excitation mode of DC machine

3. A 200/400V, 50Hz single phase transformer on test gave following readings:


OC (LV): 200 V, 0.7A, 70W
SC (HV): 15V, 10A, 80W.
Find voltage regulation at 0.8 power factor lagging at full load. [16]

4. List the various losses that incur in an alternator. Describe a suitable method of
Determining losses and efficiency of Alternator. [16]

5. A moving coil instrument has a resistance of 10 ohms and gives a full-scale


deflection while carrying a current of 50 mA. Calculate the resistance of the
multiplier to read a voltage of 700 V. [16]

6.a) What is a rectifier? Show that a PN diode works as rectifier.


b) Define the following terms,
i) Ripple factor, ii) Peak inverse voltage,
iii) Efficiency, iv) Transformer utilization factor,
v) Form factor and vi) Peak factor. [8+8]

7.a) A sinusoidal voltage Vi = 200 sin 314ft is applied to an SCR whose forward break
down voltage is 150 V. Determine the time during which SCR remains OFF.
b) What are the advantages of TRANSISTOR over SCR? [8+8]

8. Explain the principle of operation of a digital storage oscilloscope. [16]
