1.a) Explain the gyroscopic effect on ships.


b) Find the angle of inclination with respect to the vertical of a two wheeler negotiating a
turn.
Given : Combined mass of the vehicle with its rider 250kg, moment of inertia of the
engine flywheel 0.3 kg m2 & each road wheel is 1 kg m2. Speed of engine flywheel is
five times that of road wheel and in the same direction, height of centre of gravity of rider
with vehicle is 0.6m, two wheeler speed = 90 km/hr wheel radius 300 mm. Radius of
turn 50m. [8+8]

2.a) State & explain the following term.


i) Friction circle
ii) Coefficient of friction.
b) Deduce an expression for the radius of friction circle in terms of the radius of journal and
angle of friction. [8+8]

3. Determine the axial force required to engage a cone clutch transmitting 25 kw of power
at 750 rpm. Average friction diameter of the cone is 350 mm, semi cone angle 100 and
coefficient of friction is 0.25. Find width of the friction cone. [16]

4. Calculate the minimum speed of a proell governor, which has equal arms each 200 mm
and are pivoted on the axis of rotation. The mass of each ball is 4 kg and the central mass
on the sleeve is 20kg. The extension arms pf the lower links are each 60 mm long and
parallel to the axis when the minimum radius of the ball is 100mm. [16]

5. A horizontal cross compound steam engine develops 300 kw at 90 rpm. The coefficient
of fluctuation of energy as found from the turning moment diagram is to be 0.1 and speed
is to be kept with n 0.5% of the man speed. Find the mass of the flywheel require if the
radius of gyration is 16cm. [16]
6. The crankshaft of a high speed pump consists of a parallel shaft 2.5cm diameter and 48
cm long carries three eccentrics, each of diameter 5 cm and a uniform thickness of 1.5cm.
The assembly is symmetrical as shown in figure and the bearings are at A and B. The
angle between the eccentrics is 1200 and the eccentricity of each is 1.25 cm. The material
weights 0.007kg/cm2 & speed of rotation is 1400 rpm. Find dynamic load on each
bearings due to out of balance couple. [16]

7. Prove that maximum secondary unbalanced forces is1/n times maximum primary
primary unbalanced for n cylinders reciprocating engine. [16]

8. A harmonic motion is expressed as x = 12.5 sin (15x t- ) where x is measured in cm, t

in seconds and the angle in radians. Determine
i) The frequency and period of motion
ii) The maximum displacement, velocity and acceleration.
iii) The displacement, velocity and acceleration at t = 0.2 sec and t = 0.3 sec.[16]

1.a) Derive an expression for gyroscopic couple in standard form.


b) A ship is propelled by a turbine rotor which weighs 5 KN and rotates at a speed of 2100
rpm. The rotor has radius of gyration of 50 cm and rotates clockwise when viewed from
stern. Find the gyroscopic effects in each of the following cases.
i) The ship turns to the left at a speed of 8.3m/sec
ii) The ship pitches so that the bow rises from the horizontal plane with an angular
velocity of 1 rad/sec. [8+8]

2. Derive from first principles an expression for the effort required to raise a load with a
screw jack taking friction into consideration. [16]

3. Calculate power lost in overcoming friction and number of collars required for the trust
bearing whose contact surfaces are 20 cms external radius and 15cm internal radius. The
coefficient of friction is 0.08. The total axial load is 30KN. Intensity of pressure is not to
exceed 3.5 bar speed of the shaft is 420 rpm. [16]

4.a) What is the difference between porter and proell governor? Why is the speed range of
proell governor is less than that of a similar porter governor type.
b) In a porter governor the arms and the links are each 25cms long and interact on main
axis. Each ball weighs 3kgf and the central load 27.25kgf. The sleeve is in the lowest
position when the arms are inclined at 270 with the axis. The lift of the sleeve is 5 cm.
What is the force of the friction at the sleeve if the speed at the beginning of ascent at the
lowest position is equal to the speed at the beginning of descent from the highest position.

5. Determine the total percentage of fluctuation of speed and the maximum retardation of
the flywheel when the torque developed by 92 stroke engine is represented by
T = (1000 + 300 sin 2 θ – 500 cos 2θ) Nm.
Where θ is the angle turned by the crank from the IDC. The engine speed is 250 rpm
and the mass of the flywheel is 300 kg and the radius of gyration is 300 mm.

6. A shaft carries five masses m1, m2, m3, m4 & m5 which revolve at the same radius in
plane which are equidistant from each other. The magnitudes of the masses in planes 1,3
and 4 are 40 kg, 40 kg and 80 kg respectively. Determine the masses in planes 2 and 5
and their rotating balance. [16]

7.a) Explain the direct and reverse crank method for determining unbalanced forces in radial
engines.
b) Discuss the balancing of vengines. [8+8]
8. Explain why the frequencies of the applied periodic focus should not coincide with the
natural frequency of a vibration system is forced vibration particularly when the damping
in the system is negligible. [16]

1.a) Explain gyroscopic effects on aircrafts.


b) A gear engine automobile is traveling along a curved track of 120m radius. Each of the
four wheels has a moment of inertia of 2.3 kg m2 and an effective diameter of 600 mm.
The rotating parts of the engine have a moment of inertia of 1.25kg m2 the gear ratio of
the engine to back wheel is 3:2. The engine axis is parallel to the gear axle and the crank
shaft rotates in the same sense as the road wheels. The mass of the vehicle is 2050 kg
and the center of mass is 520 mm above the road level. The width by the track is 1.6m,
what will be the limiting speed of the vehicle if all the four wheels maintain contact with
the road surface. [8+8]

2. Derive an expression for the effort to be applied on a body for moving it down the rough
inclined plane when effort applied is horizontal. [16]

3. A cone clutch is used for transmittals a torque of 3 x 106 N M. The mean diameter is 20
mm and the semi cone angle is 120 30. The coefficient of friction if 0.25 and the normal
pressure at the mean radius must not exceed 1.4 x 105 N/m2. Calculate the necessary with
of the contact surface. Also find the axial force needed to hold the clutch surface
together. [16]

4.a) What are the limitations of a simple watt governor? Why has this type of governor
become obsolete?
b) A porter governor has all from arm 300 mm long. The upper arms are pivoted on the axis
of rotation and the lower arms are attached to the sleeve at a distance of 3.5 mm from the
axis. The mass of each ball is 7 kg and the mass on the sleeve 54 kg. If the extreme
radium of rotation of the balls are 200 mm and 250 mm, find the range of speed of the
governor. [8+8]

5. The equation of a turning moment curve at a three crank engine is 2500 +750 sin 30 N M
where θ is the crank angle is radians. The mean speed of the engine is 240 rpm. The
flywheel and other rotating parts attached to the engine have a mass of 500 kg at a radius
of gyration of 1m calculate
(i) the power of the engine
(ii) total fluctuation of the speed of the flywheel in percentage when the resisting
torque is constant. [16]
6.a) Explain why two balancing weight are required to balance the weights rotating in
different planes, compared to single balanced weight required to balance weights rotating
in one plane.
b) Three masses m1, m2, m3 with masses 10 kg, 9 kg, and 16kg respectively revolve in the
same plane at radium 9cm, 12cm and 6 cm respectively. The angular positions of m2 and
m3 are 600 and 1450 respectively fro m1. Determine the position and the magnitude as
mass m4 at radium 18cm t balance the system. [8+8]

7. Derive an expression for variations in tractive effort for two cylinders uncoupled
locomotive balancing. [16]

8. A machine weighing 180 N is mounted on springs and dash pots. The equivalent
stiffness of the spring is 88 N/cm and the equivalent draping is 1.2 Ns/cm. If the system
is initially at rest and a velocity of 10cm/sec is imparted to the mars, determine,
i) The displacement and velocity of the mass as a function of time
ii) The displacement at time equal to 1 sec. [16]

1.a) State any three useful applications of the gyroscopic action.


b) An aeroplane makes a complete half circle of 60 m radius, to the left when flying at 200
kmph. The rotary engine and the propeller of the aeroplane weighs 4000N with a radius
of gyration 30 cm the engine runs at 2500 rpm clockwise, when viewed from rear. Find
the gyroscopic couple on the aircraft and state its effect on it. [8+8]

2.a) State & explain the following terms.


i) Angle of friction
ii) Angle of repose
b) Derive an expression for the effort to be applied on a body for moving it down the rough
inclined plane when effort is applied is paralled to the plane. [8+8]

3. A square threaded bolt has a root diameter of 28 mm and pitch of 5mm. It is tightened by
screwing in a nut which has a mean diameter of bearing surface of 60 mm. Determine
the force required at the end of spanner which is 60 cm long when the load on the bolt is
10 KN. Assume µ for nut & bolt = 0.1 & for nut and bearing surface = 0.2 [16]

4.a) Discuss the merits and demerits of spring controlled and grainty controlled governor.
b) A governor of the Hartnell type has equal balls of mass 3kg set initially at a radius of
200mm the arms of the bell crank lever are 110 mm vertically and 150 mm horizontally.
Find
i) The initial compressive force on the spring if the speed for an initial ball radius
of 200 mm is 240 mm and
ii) The stiffness of the spring required to permit sleeve movement of 4mm on a
fluctuation of 7.5% in the engine speed. [8+8]

5. A horizontal steam engine has cylinder dia 250 mm and a stroke of 450 mm. The
reciprocating parts have a mass of 200kg. The connecting rod is 3.5 times the crank
radius and the speed is 360 rpm. When the crank has turned through an angle of 450 fro
TDC, the net pressure on the piston is 1.05 N/m2 calculate the effective turning moment
on the crank shaft for this position [16]

6.a) Explain the role of reference plane in balancing masses of rotation in different planes.
b) Differentiate between static and dynamic balancing. [8+8]
7. A rotor has the following properties.

If the shaft is balanced by two counter masses located at 100 mm radii and revolving in
planes midway of plane 1 and 2 and midway of plane 3 and 4, determine the magnitudes
of the masses and then respective angular position. [16]

8. A shaft is simply supported at the ends and is of 20 mm is dia and 600 mm is length. The
shaft carries a load of 19.62 N at its centre. The weight of the shaft per metre length is
250 N. Find the critical speed of the shaft. E = 200 GN / m2. [16]
