1.a) Define input and output variables with respect to a stirred tank heater.
b) Derive the transfer function of a mercury thermo-meter. [8+8]

2.a) Define self regulation.


b) Explain self regulating and non-self regulating systems with examples of liquid
level in tanks. [8+8]

3. A PID controller is at steady state with an. Output pressure of a 9 Psig. The set
point and pen point are together. It time t = 0, the set point is moved away from
point at a rate of 0.5 in/min. The notion of the set point is in the direction of

1. A thermo meter is placed in a bath at 450C. After the thermo meter reaches the
equilibrium with bath temperature the bath temperature is subjected to sinusoidal
forcing function about its average temperature 450C/ With an amplitude of 150C.
If the period of oscillatant is 3.0 seconds per cycle and the time constant is 10
seconds determine.
a) Maximum and minimum temp indicated by the thermo meter
b) Amplitude ratio

2.a) Is the thermo meter bulb and thermal well arrangement a non-interacting system?

b) With neat sketches explain the non-interacting interacting dead end and

3. The input (E) to PI controller is shown in the figure3. Plot the output of the

4.a) Explain briefly the principle of operation of a displacement type pneumatic PD


controller. How the derivative time can be adjusted in this controller.
b) Explain the principle of electronic proportional integral controller. [8+8]
5. A servo system for the position control of a ratable mars is stabilized by viscous

1. A mercury thermo meter having a time constant of 0.1 min is placed in a


temperature both at 1000 F and allowed to come to equilibrium with the both. At
time t = 0 temperature of the both begins to vary sinusoidally about its average

per minute. Calculate the response of the thermo meter and phase lag. [16]

2.a) Distinguish between interacting and non-inter-acting systems with examples.

7. Gases A and B are fed continuously to a tank with a volume of 30 ft3. The normal
