Uxbridge Full Circle Jiu-Jitsu
A practical martial art that is a mix of Judo Throws, Karate Strikes, Aikido Joint Locks &
Pressure points, as well as ground-fighting techniques. Those that are familiar with
watching MMA fights on TV will recognize many of
these moves. Jiu-Jitsu is based on using an attackers
weight and strength against them. Therefore,
a small person, male or female, with Jiu-Jitsu
experience can overcome a much larger attacker
making it a very effective form of self-defense in
what would be a dangerous situation.
This low impact environment allows you to get your heart rate up, burn those excess
calories, and tone and shape your body. Great for core strengthening and no swimming

Patrol is a 3 level (Rookie Patrol, Ranger Patrol, Star Patrol) Pre-Bronze award
progression that delivers work hard/play hard training for skilled swimmers 9 12
yrs of age. Swim Patrol levels form a Pre-Bronze progression of enriched training for
young swimmers who are ready to go beyond lessons. Swim Patrol is designed to
be challenging but achievable with effort. Content is organized in modules (Water
Proficiency; First Aid; Recognition & Rescue) and participants can work on content
appropriate for their abilities, regardless of the level they are enrolled in.
This is the Pre-Bronze Medallion training standard and excellent preparation for
success in Bronze Medallion. Bronze Star is designed to deliver high performance
training for skilled pre-teens. Participants develop problem-solving and decisionmaking skills individually and with partners. They also learn CPR while developing
Water Smart confidence and the lifesaving skills needed to be their own personal
lifesaver. Bronze Star is the first level of our Bronze family and ability is the only
prerequisite! Prior training in our Canadian Swim Patrol program is an advantage
but not a necessity.

Leadership Programs
How do I become a Lifeguard
and Swim Instructor?
Step 1:
Bronze Medallion
Step 2:
Bronze Cross and Standard First Aid with CPR C
This is designed to challenge the lifesaver in a more advanced setting. This course
teaches the difference between lifesaving and life guarding, the principles of
emergency procedures and teamwork. Lifesavers learn how to rescue a spinal
injured victim as well as multiple victim rescues.
Pre-requisite: Bronze Medallion
**Full attendance is mandatory
Step 3 & 4:
Red Cross Instructor
Step 4:
Lifesaving Society Instructor
Step 4 NLS:
The National Lifeguard Service Award
This award builds on the fundamental principles taught in the previous lifesaving
awards. It is recognized as the standard of lifeguard performance in Canada. NLS
education is designed to develop a sound understanding of life guarding principles,
good judgment and a mature and responsible attitude towards the role of a lifeguard.
Candidates should be prepared for new standards of fitness required for this level.
Pre-requisites: Bronze Cross, 16 yrs of age (minimum) and a current
Standard First aid.
**Full attendance is mandatory
Step 5:
Maintenance Recertification Every two years to
maintain active Status.
As of January 1, 2016, the Red Cross is eliminating the AWSI award and combining
the curriculum into a new Instructors Program. To help in this transition, UxPool will
be offering a combined AWSI and WSI during the Fall 2015. All components must be
taken at this time. For those students that already have their AWSI, they will only
need to attend the WSI weekend. This leadership course is designed to reinforce
Swimming skills and knowledge. It introduces the candidate to instructional models
and continues to develop leadership concepts. If you already have your AWSI, this
will be your last chance to do your WSI under the old program. If you cannot, you will
have to do the full instructor program during our spring session.
Pre-requisites: 15 yrs of age and Swim Kids 10. Current Bronze Cross is
recommended.
**Full attendance is mandatory

Admission Standards for Public Pools were developed by the Office of the Coroner
of Ontario to assist Lifeguards and Assistant Lifeguards in maintaining adequate

Heritage Uxbridge
Heritage Uxbridge is a
committee of dedicated volunteers commissioned by the Uxbridge
Council to act as an advocate for the preservation and conservation of heritage
properties in the Township and to advise on matters related to heritage and cultural
aspects. In past years, the Committee has developed and organized guided tours,
and published articles and maps that help promote Uxbridges cultural heritage. The
committee also seeks to identify local structures for potential Ontario Heritage Act
designation.
A few years ago, an award called the Heritage Appreciation Award was established by
the committee to recognize individuals for taking the initiative and action to preserve
our past. This year we will continue to recognize local area Heritage Farms as well
homes of heritage or cultural value through the Pride Plaque Program. Working with
Council, we successfully identified the distinctive heritage district formerly known as
Gouldville by way of specially designed street signs. We have also been instrumental
in providing advice on the potential move of an OHA designated home to enable
development of land recently purchased on Mill Street.
The Heritage Sign Bylaw Guidelines are used as a reference and to help promote a
heritage look in the downtown district; information and ideas on improving building
facades, windows and general landscapes in keeping with a heritage
appearance
can be found at the Township Office. We also
continue to work with local businesses in adding
historic murals to their buildings, including
Vinces Market, Shoppers Drug Mart, Marks Work
Warehouse, A&W and PharmaPlus. We have
asked Council to be included in the redesign and
renovation of the Township Office sign.
Our committee worked with the Trails
Committee to procure funding from Metrolinx to
renovate the train trestle in an effort to restore
foot traffic in preparation for the Trans Canada
Trails 25th anniversary in 2017, which coincides with Canadas 150th anniversary of
Confederation.
If you would like more information about this committee or have any questions about
Heritage Uxbridge, please contact Pam Beach at pbeach@town.uxbridge.on.ca or

General Tax Information
The taxes you pay each year to the Township of Uxbridge support the many services
which the Township provides, and also contribute to the delivery of Regional and
Educational Services. As a result, the Township collects taxes not only for its services,
but also on behalf of the Region of Durham and the local school boards.
Tax Billings and Installment Due Dates
The Township issues two tax bills per year. The Interim bill is mailed in January or
February each year with installments due in February and April. The Interim bill is
based on approximately 50% of the previous years tax rates and is shown as a reduction on the final bill. The final bill is mailed in May or June with the installments due
in June and September. In order to satisfy the taxes for your property for the entire
year the full amounts of both the Interim bill and the Final bill must be paid. The
Township of Uxbridge offers two PAP plans: Pre-Authorized Monthly Payment Plan
11 payments are withdrawn on the first business day of the months January through
to November (no withdrawal in December); OR Pre-Authorized Installment Payment
Plan 4 payments are withdrawn on the prescribed due dates noted on each tax bill.
PAP application forms are available at the Municipal Office and our website www.

Smoke Alarms
Smoke alarm technology has come a long way. Newer models offer smaller
sleeker designs and added functionality. Some of these features include 10 year
tamper proof alarms for landlords, remote control hush, wireless interconnected
and smart technology alarms that can distinguish the difference between burnt
toast and a fast flaming fire. Some newer models can even send you a text
message. If your current smoke alarms need replacing, do some research and
pick a model that suits your needs. Hard wired smoke alarms must be replaced
with hardwired units. Make sure that you have one on every level of your home
including the basement.
56
Now that you have protected your home with the latest technology, what do
you do when the alarm sounds? Businesses and Schools practice smoke alarm
drills several times a year but we see a lot of complacency when it comes to
developing a home escape plan. This includes two ways out and a meeting
place. Practicing gives you the opportunity to customize your plan to suit your
needs. An example would be adding a smoke alarm in the bedroom of a sound
sleeper who cant hear the alarm in the hall.
Burning By-Law
Its that time of year again. Burning yard debris can be a convenient method
of cleaning up your property. It is important to consider wind and weather
conditions. Changing conditions can cause a small fire to quickly become out
of control. In the Township of Uxbridge you must acquire a burn permit and
operate within the rules of the By-Law 2007-209. Burn Permits are available at
the Township Office or Fire Department Monday Friday 8:30AM 4:30PM. The
Burning By-Law is available on the Townships webpage.

If you need help choosing the right alarms for your home or assistance
developing a home escape plan, give us a call.
