WONDER by R.J.

PALACIO
Wonder is a story about a young boy named August
Pullman( Auggie), who truly represents the title of the
book. You see, he is ten years old and already survived
more than any of us will in ten lifetimes. The thing is,
before he was born, the doctors noticed some ''small
anomalies'' on his face but it was much much worse.
Something was wrong with his genes and when he was
born they didn't expect him to look like that. To have a
face like that, which you don't see everyday. The doctors
thought he wouldn't survive the night but after ten
years and many many surgeries here he is, being a
wonder. To get things clear, he isn't a child with special
needs, not at all. ''The universe just wasn't very kind to
him'', as mentioned later in the book.
Now to the basic stuff. He has an older sister named
Olivia (they call her Via) , who always gets more mad
than him when people look at him like they're scared. He
loves him very much and realizes that the
parents( Isabel and Nate) have to take more care of him
than her. Oh yeah, and a dog named Daisy, the best dog
ever who always sleeps with Auggie and licks his face
when he sees him. It's like she doesn't notice at all that
he's different and she's the only one. Auggie was
homeschooled by his mom until now, but now his mother
is insisting on sending him to a real middle school, a
good one too, called Beecher Prep, in which is hard to
get accepted. Of course, he doesn't want to go, because
he's really scared people will laugh at him, and you
know, the usual things he experiences every day,
everywhere he goes. His dad agrees with him, but
eventually they go to an interview with the principal,
Mr.Tushman. There, Auggie meets Julian, Charlotte and
Jack Will, who were asked to show him around the new

school (in the middle of summer) and be friends with

him during the school year, in order for him to feel more
comfortable and to fit in. Julian is not really that good of
a person, and he was immediately rude about his face,
but Charlotte and Jack defended him. When school
started in every single subject Jack was sitting next to
him, and he didn't know if it was a coincidence or did the
teachers say so, but
they became really good friends. In the caffeteria,
Auggie was sitting all by himself, and everyone was
staring at him, so a girl named Summer, sat with him
and they became really good friends, too. So, first day of
school wasn't that bad after all. But still, later on, the
rest of the children were very rude to him and didn't
want to touch him because they would get 'the plague'.
Julian was of course the first in line of all that children.
Later on, things got even more messier with Julian, and
Auggie overheard Jack badmouthing him, and everything
was going downwards. Jack and Auggie weren't talking,
Jack punched Julian because he called Auggie a freak
and almost got expelled, but everything was handled, if
you can call that handled. When they got back to school,
Jack noticed no one was talking to him, then Charlotte
told him about Julian's winter party and how he turned
everyone against Jack, even some parents. So there
were just a few people on Jack's side. Summer and
Auggie were two of them, and these three became really
good friends. Julian and his two followers, Miles and
Henry, continued to bully Jack and Auggie, but they got
used to it, and didn't care at all, and everyone else was
bored of it too, so the number of people on Julian's side
was getting smaller. Also, Daisy died and the family was
of course, crushed, especially Auggie. Then came the
school trip to Broarwood Nature Reserve, and luckily,
Julian wasn't going. They had a great time, but there
was an incident with some seven-graders from another
school. They started to tease Jack and Auggie and threw

them on the ground, but Miles and Henry and Amos (who
weren't nice at all to Auggie) appeared out of nowhere
and defended them, punched the seven-graders, and
they all ran away. To Auggie, that was the scariest and
the best moment of his life because finally someone
stood up for him, and actually was very nice to him.
After that everything changed. People found out about
the fight and everyone was saying hello to Auggie and
called him ''little dude''. Things were getting really good.
At the end of fifth grade, August won an award for being
brave and the person who inspired everyone around him
to be kind. It turns out universe evened it all out.
