This study examined the utility of the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and its factors in screening for anxiety disorders. The BAI and Anxiety Disorders Interview Schedule were administered to 193 adults. The BAI and its four factor scores were compared between individuals diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder, specific or social phobia, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and no diagnosis. Cut scores on the BAI and its factors were calculated for each group to determine the sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values. The results support that the BAI is best at assessing panic symptoms and can distinguish between individuals with and without panic disorder when used as a screening tool.
