1.0
Scope
1.1
This procedure covers the insulation resistance and continuity testing of all cables installed by Sulzer.
1.2
The tests shall normally be carried out by the electrician installing the cable after it has been glanded and
cores terminated.
2.0
Procedure
2.1
Test equipment used in the tests shall be issued by the Electrical Supervisor.
2.2
2.2.1
Where applicable, the correct type of cable, glands, glanding accessories, cable trays conduit and conduit
accessories have been used, and that all these items are installed exactly in line with the manufacturer's
guidelines applicable to the particular application.
2.2.2
2.2.3
2.2.4
2.2.5
Earthing is correct.
2.2.6
2.3
Continuity checks shall be carried out using a multimeter where two cores at 'one end' of the cable are
shorted directly together (i.e., at the instrument), the loop resistance then checked from the opposite end
of the cable (i.e., at the junction box.) For cables with three or more cores, cores shall be shorted out in
turn as pairs to ensure each core of the cable is tested.
End to end continuity checks shall be carried out for earth/drain wire where instruments have shield or
drain.
2.4
Insulation of cable cores shall be tested using a 500V insulation resistance tester as follows:
2.4.1
Earth continuity check between cable gland metallic body and earth stud on junction box./support frame.
2.4.2
2.4.3
3.0
Record
3.1
Results shall be recorded on the Cable Insulation and Continuity Check Sheet (Doc No: SLM-963) as
each test is done by the person carrying out the tests.
3.2
Any cabling with insulation resistance less than 10M shall be rejected and replaced.
3.3
Any cabling with core continuity resistance more than 0.5 shall be rejected and replaced.
3.4
The test sheet shall include project number, cable number, name of the electrician who performed the
test, their signature and date.
3.5
The complete record sheets are send to the QA department for inclusion in the project Data Dossier.
