THE DUST CHRONICLES TEAM

Giselle

Editor in Chief of Dust Chronicles. Giselle spends most of her time

sorting out the problems that are part of publishing a monthly magazine.

Rosie

As the mechanic and builder of the office team Rosie spends a lot of
her time creating the crazy ideas that the rest of the team come up
with.

Dee Dee

As it is Dee Dee her task to sort out all the pictures that go into Dust
Chronicles, she had a blast this issue. We have got more pictures than
in any of the previous magazines.

Helga

We had to do without Helga for this issue as she had to go back home
for two weeks. She has promised to bring us back some nice gifts.

Bub

Whenever something needs doing and nobody feels like it then the
job is given to Bub. This isnt always a good idea as we found out
when we asked Bub to go and get lunch for everybody. The shop was
evacuated and we had to explain that everything was fine.

BY THE NUMBERS: TURRETED OR TWIN

By FHaugh

ARE WEAPONS MOUNTED IN TURRETS REALLY AS

GOOD AS TWIN WEAPONS WITH A LIMITED ARC?

Ever since the previews of the V2 cards for the

Pounder and the Ludwig, the debate has gone on.
The Pounder should cost less because it only
gets one shot, was the standard Allied players
argument. With your turret, you dont have to
move before you can shoot, was the normal reply. But are the odds of getting a sustained attack really worth giving up one of your attack
dice? For now Im only going to talk about your
chances to hit. We all know that the Pounders
main gun does less damage than the Axis 88s,
but thats a subject for another article.
Unless your opponent is not paying attention, or
has some pressing need elsewhere, theyre not
going to stay in your front arc very often if you
dont have a turret. That means that your chances for sustained fire with your front arc twin guns
are fairly small. Most of the time, youre going
to have to at least pivot to get the shot. In a nutshell, turrets allow more sustained fire.
Most of us already know that our odds of hitting
with one die are 1 in 3 or 33%. Adding a reroll
for sustained fire jumps it up to 5 in 9 or 56%.
So, if you dont have to move to get LOS with
your weapon, you should hit with 56% of your
damage. If you have twin weapons but have to
move things only change a little. You still get
two dice with a decent chance (44%) for one
of them to hit, but you also have
a small chance (11%) for both of
them to hit, doubling your damage.
In the end twin weapons will average 66% damage, just a little higher than the turrets 56%. So twin
weapons are better, right?
Maybe not. V2 also changed the
rules for reactive fire, making turrets more important. If you have
no limit on your field of fire you

only need one success on two dice to get a shot

off. So 44% for one success on the reactive roll
times your 33% to hit with one die leaves you
with 15% damage. If you can get lucky with two
successes on the reactive you get sustained fire.
That gives you 11% times 56% for 6%. Altogether you should average 21% damage with a
turreted weapon and reactive fire.
The front mounted twin weapons are a different
story. The chances of your enemy provoking a
reactive attack in your front arc are usually very
low. Just about the only way youre going to get
that attack in before youre pulverized to roll two
successes. Combine those low odds with your
average damage from a normal attack (11% times
66%) and youve got a measly 7%. Its worth a
try if you know your walker will be slag after the
enemy attacks, but otherwise its a waste.
Of course, reactive attacks and sustained fire are
just two of the benefits to turrets. Being able to
keep your front mounted weapons pointed at a
second target or preventing your large vehicles
from showing their broad side to the other enemy
units can also be very helpful. With turrets it is
easier to bring more weapons to bear on a single
target to eliminate it quickly.
So in the end, are turrets worth giving up the extra weapon? If you like to play hide and seek
with your units, only exposing them to a few
select enemy units at a time, yes. If
you frequently find your units deep in
the enemys territory, or they in yours,
absolutely. If your opponent likes to
make mad dashes to your flanks, forcing you to consider reactive fire, definitely. In other words, if you play to the
turreted units strengths you will find
them worth every point. If you expect
them to function like a dedicated tank
destroyer, youll never be happy with
them.

DUST KNIGHTS CHARITY EVENT

On Sunday 21st June The Dust Knights

U.K took part in a fund raising event at
Telford S.T.A.G.S war games club to raise
money for the U.K Armed forces charity
Help For Heroes. The day was a huge
success with many DUST players turning
up to play games and to help raise monies,
with a great total of 350 being raised for
the fund, BIG well done to all the guys
and girls that took part and made the day
a huge success and fun event.

THE FUTURE FOR DUST

The Operation Babylon Kickstarter has been the

start of a troublesome time for the Dust brand.
What was intended to be an accelerated release
schedule has ended up causing many delays. The
Dust Community is more divided now than ever.
Some want their miniatures and move on, others
want nothing to do with Dust and there are those
who are only interested in causing more friction
by posting personal attacks aimed at other hobbyists, Dust Studio and Battlefront Miniatures on
social media. So what is the latest news regarding the Operation Babylon Kickstarter?

In the first week of June the last Kickstarter update by Battlefront stated that an order list of
product needed and payment had been made.
A few days later the below picture was posted
on Facebook by Paolo Parente. The image shows
the items as ordered by Battlefront packed into a
container, ready for shipment to the Battlefront
Distribution Center.

The ordered items did not include the incentive

items that backers would get for free as part of
their pledges. These incentive items had been the
major issue the entire time and the cause of the
delays and accusations back and forth. There is
to be a third and final order placed by Battlefront

10

when the product that is on its way now has been

shipped to the backers.
Then Paolo Parente posted the following statement on Facebook:.As per today DS CEO William Yau has formerly sent the offer of 50% reduction price on the freebies so that they might be
included in the newly born Wave 3 shipment.
The Wave 3 is not only about freebies, there are
dozen of orders in there. Orders that BF only recently confirmed to DS... I truly hope that they
will accept this very generous offer and deliver
all Backers diligently. I will keep you posted.

Are we seeing the end of the tunnel that is the

Operation Babylon Kickstarter? Yet again, all we
can do is wait and see what this third and final order will contain and if Battlefront take Dust Studio up on the offer regarding the incentive items.
Some people have been saying that the events
from the last year are the end for Dust. We at Dust
Chronicles think otherwise.the following pages
showcase just a selection of new product coming
from Dust Studio, tournaments and events organised around the world in the coming months and
a few other things. All of these clearly show that
Dust is alive and moving forward. Not only that,
there are plenty of people out there who enjoy
Dust Tactics, Dust Battlefield and Dust Warfare.

World War Dust (WWD) is an ongoing international campaign that puts the fate of world
in the hands players and their affiliated Posts.
Each month the results of WWD play will
affect faction control over areas of the
world. This control and decisions made by
each post and each factions central command will affect monthly play conditions.
WWD is the ultimate massively-multiplayer
Dust campaign.
This campaign begins July 1st and runs through
to Dust World Expo 2016, where the intend is to
have a culminating event.

This campaign will be driven by you, the players, and as such your comments and suggestions
are welcome. New scenarios and Post/theatre of
operations-specific scenarios will be forthcoming once the campaign is under-way.
Fronts and Posts, choose your theatre of operations and let loose the dogs of war!

Lets look at the contents of one of the model kits

that Dust Studio will be releasing. The Mickey/
Pounder Light set allows you to construct a single Allied walker.
Maybe the most recognizable walker on the
planet today, the Mickey has given birth to a
huge range of machines build on its rugged chassis. In the Pacific or the Middle-East, the Allies
use a tropical version of the same chassis, whose
main feature is an open top turret. The deadliest arsenal of the Mickey family stays the same.
Please note that this kit includes the two pilots
miniatures that you can see on the pictures on
this page. It also includes a sheet of Allied Walkers decals. This kit allows you to build a tropical
Mickey, or Steel Rain, or Pounder. All cards to
use any of these walkers in Dust Tactics and Dust
Tactics Battlefield are included in the kit.

DUST UNIT SPOTLIGHT: IS-48A & IS-48B

With the ever increasing threat posed by heavier
enemy vehicles on the battlefield, the SSU has
responded with what it knows best: very heavy
tanks. The first army to field such tanks early in
the war, they were a disastrous surprise for the
invaders of the Motherland back in 1941. Now
with this new generation of even more armored
and armed tanks, the SSU hopes to achieve the
same goal as six years ago. Surprise and destroy
their opponents.

The IS-48 A is a specialized close assault version of the new heavy tank chassis. It mounts
the biggest Tesla Gun available in the whole
SSU arsenal, capable of tremendous damage to
any ground target. With this new technology, the
bloc hopes to gain a definitive upper hand on its
enemies. Beams from this weapon can devastate
the battlefield in a few shots.
The tank also has three 12,7 mm machine guns,
one on the top in an antiaircraft role, one in the
chassis and one in the back of the turret, a feature
unique to SSU tanks. This extra machine gun
gives the vehicle an incredible resilience during
combat in an urban environment.
SSU tank commanders love this new tank and all
Generals throughout the bloc try to have some
in their forces. They can always be found at the
very tip of the assault, opening the way for the
red tide to engulf the enemy. Unable to engage
foes at long range, the IS-48 A is often paired
with a Mark B or surrounded by SSU walkers.
With these combinations of arms, nothing can
stand in the way of the Revolution..

22

The IS-48 B is the all-around version of the new

heavy tank chassis. It houses a powerful 152 mm
gun which has proven to be a reliable and deadly
weapon on many others SSU vehicles. The tank
also has two 12,7 mm machine guns, one on the
top in an antiaircraft role and one in the back of
the turret, a feature unique to SSU tanks. This
extra machine gun gives the vehicle an incredible resilience during combat in an urban environment. To clear out strong points and bunkers,
the IS-48 B also has an ATO-45 flamethrower
in the chassis, in place of the regular machine
gun found there on many other tanks. Soviet engineers found that the vehicle had enough long
range firepower, but any vehicle needs a little extra to make it unique: this was it..

CAPTURED VEHICLE CARDS

Operation Babylon introduced rules for

fielding Captured Walkers (and also two
tracked vehicles). These captured machines retain their statistics in terms of
movement and weapons, what changes is
their cost. If you want to field a captured
walker the cost goes up by two points.
Each unit in the Dust Tactics and Dust
Tactics: Battlefield game comes with its
own reference card. This card comes in
the color for the appropriate Bloc (Allies, Axis, SSU) and that means your
nice row of cards will include one ugly
duckling as its color doesnt match the
rest of your cards.
No more, we say. Dust Chronicles has
started creating cards for the captured
walkers featured in the Operation Babylon book. The first card that was finished
is the Lavrentiy Beria captured by the
Axis and we didnt want to wait so decided to publish it this issue. More cards
will follow and will be published both in
Dust Chronicles and our website..

Supplies on the table at the end of turn 8 do not count.

The winner is the player who has gotten the most supplies off the table by moving a unit with any supplies of their
table edge. The unit cannot return to the table afterwards.

When one of your units is on an Objective square they can perform a special action: Search for Supplies.
If a unit performs this action they roll five dice. For each Army Symbol rolled the unit has found some supplies.
Put a token by the units card to indicate how many supplies they have found.
Once the Search for Supplies action has been performed take the objective marker off the table.
These supplies stay with that unit for the rest of the game. If the unit is destroyed the supplies drop onto the
table and any other unit (friend or foe) can spend an action to pick them up.

Objectives:
Starting with the attacker, then alternating with the defender, place two Objectives each on the centre line of
squares. The Objectives cannot be within Range 1 from the edge of the table or another Objective.

Deployment:
Each players force enters the table by the squares along their long table edge

Game Board:
Place the game boards with their long edges touching
