2. GLOBAL TRADE - KEY FINDINGS

South Africa dominates in the global ferro-chromium trade. In 2014, South
Africa exported 3,671 thousand tonnes of ferro-chromium totaling 3,232 million
USD, 16% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was China,
where it supplied 34.9% of its total ferro-chromium exports in value terms,
accounting for 54.9% of Chinas total imports.
From 2007 to 2014, South Africa was a net exporter of ferro-chromium. Over
this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. In physical
terms, this difference was even more pronounced.
Kazakhstan and India were among the other main global suppliers of ferrochromium in 2014. The fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were
Sweden (+42.1% per year) and Turkey (+18.4% per year). Still, even with
these inroads made by competing countries, South Africa was able to
effectively strengthen its position in the global export structure.
In 2014, South Africas top 5 trading partners were China, Japan, the U.S., the
Republic of Korea and Italy, with a combined 67.8% share of South Africas
ferro-chromium exports. The share of China increased significantly (+13.9
percentage points), while the share of Japan illustrated negative dynamics (6.9 percentage points).
