1.0 Introduction
English is the second language of communication in Malaysia. As
it is treated as the second medium of communication, it is then
one of the compulsory taken subjects in secondary school for
ages. However, the number of failures for this subject is always
in an alarming rate. Thus, schools need to organize activities
which could help those weak students to polish their proficiency
in English.
As one of the rural schools in Sabah, SMK Madai is facing the
same problem on percentage of failures for English SPM
examination (1119). Therefore, a program known as HALUS
(Harapan Lulus) is introduced since 3 years ago to cater those
students with low level of English proficiency yet do have the
potential to pass for their 1119 papers.

2.0

Rational

SPM 1119 consists of two papers. Paper 1 tested students ability

in writing while Paper 2 is meant for testing students capability
in reading comprehension and literature elements. Both papers
carry the total of 175 marks whereby Paper 1; 85 and Paper 2;
70.
As for students to pass SPM 1119, they need to score the
minimum of 75 marks out of 175 as that will bring 42%.
Therefore, we believe that by helping students to get the 75
marks, they will be able to pass their 1119.
Posit on that calculation and believe, selected sections will be
focused as to help students to practice to score 75 marks.

analyzed. By polishing their particular ability, it is not impossible

to help those potential students to pass to get through the 1119
papers.

3.0 Program Details

HALUS is a program advised by the Head of Language
Department. Below are the details on the HALUS Bahasa
Inggeris:

5 Belian is selected as the targeted class to get 80% pass because it

is the 4th class in the rank. Thus, all the students need to pass as
that will help to improve schools achievement on SPM 119.

4.0

Closure

English panel is trying our level best in helping students to be

able to score good results for SPM 1119 papers. Activities,
modules and workshops are carried out to cater students need
throughout their preparation for SPM. However, any actions
taken would not work out if the admin of the school didnt
participate. Thus, we hope that even the school admin couldnt
participate in preparing the students, they will be able to at least
understand the needs of carrying out activities on our way.
Understanding and cooperation given by all is very much
appreciated in helping us to achieve our dreams; below 7 for
GPMP or 80% pass.
