1. In the Boys method experiment what is the shape of the liquid lens? Explain how you
can determine the focal length of this liquid lens?

2. What are Lissajous figures? Write down the conditions for which Lissajous figures will
be a circle and a straight line.

3. Explain how a thermocouple can be used to measure an unknown temperature? What do

you mean by the calibration curve for a thermocouple?

4. Show how you determine the value of time base graphically. Let the line frequency of a
supply be 40 Hz. What frequency you have to adjust in frequency generator (function
generator) to get an approximately steady four loops?

5. State the law of pressure of gas, volume remaining constant. Name the apparatus that is
used in the determination of the pressure co-efficient of air. Why it is called a
thermometer?

6. Write down the expression for the time period for a spring-mass system. From this
expression derive a relationship between the effective mass and the mass that is attached
to the spring. Draw the graph and point out the position of effective mass.

7. Draw the optical diagram for determining the focal length of a concave lens. Also
indicate the object distance and image distance for concave lens. What is index
correction?

8. Draw the circuit diagram for the experiment to determine the unknown resistance by P.O.
Box. How do you know that your connection is correct? Write down the laws that you
have verified in your experiment.

9. What is e.m.f.? Draw the circuit diagram for the comparison of the e.m.f. of two cells.
Knowing the e.m.f. of one cell can you determine the potential drop per unit length of the
wire?

10. Draw the circuit diagram for the measurement of mechanical equivalent of heat. Write
down the working formula by mentioning each term. Who does the work in this
experiment?

11. What is photoelectric effect? Show graphically how you determine the threshold
frequency of a photocathode and value of the Planks constant in the photoelectric effect
experiment?

12. State and explain Hookes law. Write down the names of the different types of elastic
modulii. What is the ratio of Youngs modulus of the two wires of same material when
the length of one wire is twice the other?

13. What is the unit of thermal conductivity? Write down the working formula in determining
the thermal conductivity of a bad conductor by Lees method and explain its different
terms.

14. In determining the melting point of a given solid you find that the balance point at room
temperature is 105 cm. The balance point shifts continuously to higher values when you
start heating the hot junction slowly. But at a certain temperature the balance point
becomes steady say at 250 cm. After further heating the balance point begins to shift to
higher values and continues to do so. What happens during the steady state?

15. State Malus law of polarization. What happens when the polarizer and analyzer are (i)
parallel to each other and (ii) perpendicular to each other?

16. In Meldes experiment to determine the unknown frequency of a tunning fork how you
ascertain that resonance has occurred? What happens if the length of the string is halved?
Write down the working formula with all the parameters defined.

17. Draw a neat optical diagram of the Newtons ring experiment. Does the spacing between
all the rings remain same in the field of view? Justify your answer?

18. What is a Nicol prism? How does it polarize a beam of light? What are ordinary and
extraordinary rays?
