Victor Meldrew moments
I‟ve just had one of those “I don‟t believe it”
moments. A wife and mum has just told me: “You
married me, 20 years ago.” The word „bigamist‟
crossed my mind but, of course, she was referring
to her wedding day ... I took the service! Goodness,
was that 20 years ago? I don‟t believe it, that
means I‟m 20 years older!
A little later, a young couple came to see me about Revd. Bob Politt
getting married. (Marriage in our benefice seems to
be quite popular at the moment) The bride-to-be said, “I can remem-
ber being in the Sunday School and coming to your house to practise
a puppet show for the Songs of Praise on the Green. In the garden
you had a fish drawn with coloured stones, set in concrete.” Good-
ness, my youngest daughter made that, about 12 years ago. I don‟t
believe it!
Our lives are made up of memories which orbit around us like the
moon orbiting the earth; memories of family, friends, lovers, teachers,
special events, experiences and the like. All these memories go to
make up our life, our emotional solar system.
Copernicus, a 16th century mathematician and astronomer, broke with
1500 years of tradition and declared that the earth revolved around
the sun. The Pope wasn‟t best pleased, but Copernicus was right. It
can be hard to accept that we are not the centre of the universe, that
life doesn't revolve around us. Politicians, Toyota, doctors, we don‟t
always get things right because we can‟t. The world is bigger than our
little bit of time, matter and space.
Lent is traditionally a time when Christians do a spiritual „stock take‟
of their relationship with Jesus, acknowledging that we don‟t always
get it right and need God‟s forgiveness and grace in our daily lives.
One point we need to remember is that however small, or insignificant
we may feel, God‟s love for you and me is never in question. Jesus
said, “Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of
them is forgotten by God...Fear not, you are of more value than many
sparrows.” Luke 12:7

EDITORIAL
It‘s my turn to edit the Link for the next
two editions and I look forward to
hearing from you if you have any news
items, anecdotes or articles that you
think would be of interest to our
readers. Just send them to me.

My contact details are on page 46 of this copy of the

Link. I‘m hoping that in next month‘s edition I can
highlight the achievements of the schoolchildren living
in our villages. So if your son/daughter has done some-
thing praiseworthy... please share it with us!
We always have a variety of advertisements to publicise
in the Link, and this edition is no exception! Your Parish
Councils are keeping you informed about activities
undertaken by elected members and the churches have
a very busy lead up to the Easter Festival; it‘s all in this
magazine.
Of course, all of this comes at a cost both in terms of
time and resources. The Link needs a large team of
volunteer helpers and printing costs continue to rise.
It is perhaps appropriate, therefore, to mention that
next month we will be delivering an envelope with
your magazine to ask for a
voluntary donation as a
DONATION TO THE contribution to Link funds; I
LODDON LINK mention this now because it has
been two years since we last
made a similar appeal.
Please do help us continue with this free magazine. I
look forward to hearing from you with interesting news
items.

Our thanks to Mike Abrams, the Conqordia
Choir, our soloists and trumpeter, Steve, for
this opportunity to sing and perform parts of
Handel‘s Messiah.
Thanks to all the ‘scratch‘ singers and to
those who have bought tickets for the
performance. After bills have been paid we
expect to raise another bond of £500 for the extension.

Jelly Beans do the Trick!

Our thanks also to Carol and Sammie
Armstrong for their Jelly Bean project
with has raised at least another bond of
£500 toward the extension fund.

Richard Elphick, who is keeping the

calendar of fund raising ideas will soon be
announcing a Stewardship Scheme.
Participants will be given £10.00 and asked to
use the money to make more ….
e.g. coffee morning, cleaning, taxiing etc.

Tough Questions Evenings at the Four

We had a good evening on the 10th February and,
following suggestions from those attending, will
be developing this opportunity for a meeting of minds.
We hope to organise some evenings of Pizza & Pud

PRAYER AND REFLECTION
Lent, the forty days leading up to Easter, is a
period when Christians traditionally examine
their lives with the intention of addressing
areas of ‗flabbiness‘ in their service of Jesus
Christ and their neighbours.
Paul, the apostle wrote: ―I press on toward the goal to win the
prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.―
Philippians 3:14
Prayer for the month
Dear Lord Jesus, your love comes to us new every morning and,
like the sun, is always shining upon us, even when the clouds
get in the way. It is so easy to take your love for granted so
please help me to be more aware of you in the everyday things
of my life: driving on the roads; standing in the checkout queue;
visiting the Post Office, The Shop, the pub or the garage. Lord,
so often I see things only from my point of view; enable me to
see others in their situation so that I may be a neighbour to all I
meet and so honour your name. Be in all I say, all I think, let me
see you in all I meet and in what others say to me.
Lord Jesus, hear my prayer. Amen.
Prayer points for March. Pray for...
 Those whose lives are affected by the current economic
crisis
 Families who care for children or adults with special needs
 Those who are away from home, friends and family
 Any known to us who are sick, sad of suffering
 For our nation and the leaders of nations - pray for peace
 Any serving in or with the Armed Forces
 Chaplains and visitors in prisons
 Those in caring professions that they may truly care
 Pray for yourself—bring your own needs to God
 Confess to God what burdens you
 Give thanks and praise to God for one thing today

JUST A THOUGHT......
Life is about enduring adversity, it‟s about being true to
ourselves and striving to do the will of our creator;
If we do this we will live in harmony with ourselves and with all
that is the finest in our nature;
The real prizes of life are not health, wealth or happiness -
states that can be destroyed so easily, but instead, faith, hope
and above all love.

Sherfield Park Community Association
As we move into the New Year, 2010 will be an important time
for the Association as we take on the formidable tasks needed
to prepare ourselves for operating and managing the new
Community Centre. Construction of the centre will commence
in the next few weeks with completion expected by the end of
the year. Indeed, the formal start of construction called the
―Sod Turning‖ ceremony will take place on Sherfield Park
towards the end of February.
In January this year we launched our new community web site;
www.sherfieldparkcommunity.co.uk as an important step in
our plans to develop and support the community. The site is
dedicated to provide a way of making information available
about the activities taking place in and around the
development and to allow residents to offer their own input.
The website has a dedicated link to Facebook where residents
and others can express their ideas on the sorts of activities
they would like in and around the Community Centre together
with their views on just about anything affecting life on
Sherfield Park.
The Association will be holding its Annual General Meeting
(AGM) on Saturday 17 April 2010 at the Sherfield School
beginning at 10.30 am. Any questions related to the
Associations activities should be forwarded to Christine Ruddy
or me for inclusion in the agenda not later than Saturday 27th
March.
David Leivesley (Chairman)

JUST A THOUGHT......
Giving love is a fulfilment in itself.
It must not matter to us whether it
is returned or not:
If we have the capacity to give love, any
return we get for it is a special bonus.
If we give love freely and without expectation of return, we will
find ourselves growing spiritually.

Page 19
Update from Sherfield-on-Loddon Parish
Council
Many thanks for all those of you that have sent us information
as a result of the newsletter that went out last month.
Electronic copies are available by emailing the clerk -
clerk@sherfieldonloddon-pc.gov.uk or on the Parish Council
website.
The Parish Council have been successful in getting through the
first round of a grant application for a trim trail, for the second
part of the application we would like to gather opinions from
residents on the need for a trim trail on the Green.
Plans can be seen on the notice board area of the website
http://www.sherfieldonloddon-pc.gov.uk/noticeboard.asp.
Please contact the clerk with your views.
A number of Parish Councillors met with staff from Hampshire
Highways North and Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council
towards the end of January to discuss a number of traffic
calming ideas. These included a pedestrian refuge at the
junction of Bramley Road with Old Reading Road and narrowing
the Old Reading Road from the Southern entrance of the village
up to Horse Pond, signage could then be reduced. These have
been taken away for review and we will update you on the
feasibility of these ideas in futures issues of the Link.
Please log on to the SOLVE website (Save Our Loddon Valley
Environment) to sign their petition against the threat of 10,000
new houses being built in the Loddon Valley
www.solveloddon.org, a link is available from the notice board
on the Parish Council website. 10,000 houses would be approx.
three times the size of Chineham.
All the ditches on and around the Green have now been cleared.
Hampshire County Council have used jets to clear debris and
silt from the pipe running along the Bramley Road and have al-
so used root cutting equipment to clear tree roots that had in-
vaded the pipe. Work to replace sections of broken pipe should
be starting soon.
Draft plans for the layout of the new burial ground and draft

Page 20
regulations have been produced with the help of the Institute of
Cemetery and Crematorium Management. These are currently
being reviewed by councillors.
A Post Box will soon be installed outside the Village Hall where
you can post any correspondence for the attention of the
Parish Council. We would still welcome any views on the Parish
Plan, play schemes, flooding and the proposed trim trail.
The next Sherfield-on-Loddon Parish Council meeting will be held
on 10th March 2010 at 7.30pm in the Liddell Hall. Members of the
public are very welcome to attend. The Annual Parish Meeting
will be held in the Village Hall at 7.30pm on Friday 21st May,
everyone welcome.

LODDON PLAYERS
Just before everyone‘s Christmas celebrations
kicked off, on November 27th, 28th and 29th
the Loddon Players performed their latest
production - Noel Coward‘s ‗Private Lives‘ - and
it was very well received by a packed
audience. Unfortunately, due to our small and very stretched
membership, we are unable to put on our usual April
production. However, we are looking forward to making our
next production a very special one. To mark our fifth
anniversary we are planning a Murder Mystery play with
supper in the interval. We have yet to decide upon the
play. The dates of the production are 30th September,
1st and 2nd October.
We would like to perform more plays but the existing
members are unable to put in more hours. To expand our
membership we will be holding an Open Evening where
prospective members can meet us, see at first hand how a
play is produced from choosing the script, auditioning the
actors, lighting, props and much more. This list is endless.
So, even if you can‘t see yourself ‗treading the boards‘, there
is sure to be a role for you to take up. See our website
(www.loddonplayersatsherfield.co.uk) for details of our
activities or contact me (Chris Horton) direct on 01256

After serving Sherfield Park faithfully on the committee for
several years, Chris Wright has decided to step down. Chris
was responsible for setting up the delivery rounds at Sherfield
Park as well as his duties on the committee, for which we give
him many thanks. The new representative on the committee is
Eileen Leivesley, to whom we give a warm welcome. Her
contact details can be found on page 46. Caroline Rowe, one
of our previous editors, has also stepped down from the
committee but will continue to be active in providing material
for feature articles, for which we are most grateful.

Percy's Plant Sale

Percy's Plant Sale will be held on Saturday 8th May at
the Village Hall with proceed's going to St.
Leonard's Church and Sherfield Village Hall. Now is
the time to plant those seeds and bring them on for
the sale. More details in next month's Link.

Whit Sunday Bluebell Walk

A walk for all villagers is being arranged by Sandy Johnston to
take place on Sunday May 23rd to take in the blue-
bell woods at Hartley Wespall and Rotherwick.
The walk will be departing from Sherfield at
mid-day, and St. Leonard's Church will be providing
refreshments for all walkers at St. Mary's Church,
Hartley Wespall. Anyone is entitled to join the walk
without sponsorship, but St. Leonard's Church is
looking for sponsored walkers to support the
building project for toilets adjacent to the church.
There will be a five mile and an eight mile walk, both to take in
the refreshment stop at Hartley Wespall. Please make a note in
your diary - this will be a fun walk and an excellent opportunity
to see the wonderful bluebells which hopefully will be in full
glory at the time. More details in next month's Link.

All Saints Stratfield Turgis
A history of one of Hampshire‘s hidden gems, by Simon Boase
All Saints Church sits in a peaceful pock-
et of the Loddon tributaries next to the ex
manor house, Turgis Court and forming
the historical centre of old Stratfield Tur-
gis . The actual date of the foundation
can be pin-pointed to within a few years,
for there was no mention of a church in
1291 at the time of Pope Nicholas' taxa-
tion, but by 1309 the first incumbent, Hugonis, had been rec-
orded.
Today's church, deconsecrated in the early 1970‘s when major
items like the font and stained glass windows were moved to
St Mary‘s Hartley Wespall, still contains many traces of the
site's 700 years of history. The 14th century is represented by
two cinquefoil lights in the window at the east end of the nave.
A severe fire in 1792 destroyed most of the church and little
but the bell survived (cast in 1683 by E. Knight and inscribed
"John Cowdrey"). Further activity included the restoration of
the fabric in 1901, a full interior redeco-
ration in 1965 and more recently a new
roof. Two stone memorials to parishion-
ers are of interest – the black stone
under the altar is to commemorate
William Pitt, a son of John Pitt, who died
in 1704 in his 62nd year; and a grave-
stone outside the south door is of John
Mears who was groom to the first Duke of Wellington and led
the Duke's charger at his funeral.
The earliest recorded burial in the churchyard is of Robert
Martine in 1553. The large tree outside the door is a commem-
orative magnolia tree planted in 1902 for King Edward VII coro-
nation. During the 2nd World War a German plane, which sub-
sequently bombed Reading, machine-gunned the north side of
the church itself where the marks can still be seen.
The Church is now owned by Stratfield Saye Estate and plans
are in hand to find a sympathetic new use for this beautiful old
building. It‘s well worth a wander down the lane to see this
hidden gem. Page 25
Beat Officer Mandy Jewell‘s Report
Speed enforcement: myself and a colleague from the Roads
Policing Unit were in Mortimer West End and Silchester on
January 26. The results were:
4 x Fixed Penalty Notices and 6 x referrals for Driver
Awareness Training.
I know speeding is still an issue, please
report any incidents of excess speed (see
telephone number below), giving location
and time of day of the incident.
Anti social behaviour: There was only one
report of anti social behaviour in January.
Public reassurance:
The increase in the number of outbuilding
burglaries has slowed.
A victim pack has been put together giving crime prevention
advice, which we trust will be helpful. Just to let you know the
latest trend seems to be theft of pedal cycles. Unfortunately
there have been no witnesses to the incidents and there is no
pattern at the moment.
Please be vigilant. Please report anything suspicious -

Have HMRC asked you to repay overpayments
they have made you through Tax Credits ?
The Government has acknowledged that there were serious
administrative problems in the two years after the introduc-
tion of Tax Credits. Recovery of the debts resulting from
overpayments made during these years continues to cause
hardship, with many debts still in dispute.
If you have been asked to repay such an overpayment there
may be grounds for you to challenge this overpayment;
 If HMRC made a mistake which led to the overpay-
ment and you did what was required of you to put
this right or
 If repaying the overpayment would cause you
hardship
Basingstoke Citizens Advice Bureau can help you to look into
whether you do have grounds to challenge the overpayment.
If you would like our support we operate a drop-in service 10
-3.30 Monday to Friday (except Thursday which is phone ser-
vice only 9.30-11.30) and Saturday mornings 10-12.

The Advice Line telephone number is 01256 322814.

Major Development with the St Leonard‘s

Extension Project
From Easter Day 2009 the St Leonard‘s Parochial Church
Council set themselves one year to see how fund raising for
the extension project would fair in the current, challenging
economic climate, with the intention of reviewing progress of
the project at the first PCC meeting of 2010.
Following this review the decision has been made to revise
the project to include toilets, a small kitchen, an office for
production of the Link magazine, and a teaching area for
children. The plan to build a hall is no longer part of the
extension project.
The PCC feel that the need for essential facilities, for all users
of the church, must be the main priority for our community.

Sherfield and District
GARDENING CLUB
Reported by Lynne Wheeler
There was a record turnout (44 in total) for the first meeting of
2010 to hear Richard Thornton deliver a talk and slideshow on
‗Wisley throughout the Year‘. Wisley is the name of the Royal
Horticultural Society‘s Gardens in Surrey.
Although Richard doesn‘t work at Wisley, he visits the
extensive gardens 8-10 times a year to experience the
changing landscape and to build up his slide collection.
The original 60 acres were bequeathed to the RHS at the
beginning of the twentieth century but subsequent land
acquisitions mean that the site is now four times this size.
Richard‘s presentation consisted of
over 100 slides and demonstrated
that there is interest at Wisley all year
round. He informed us that Wisley is
undoubtedly one of the great gardens
of the world. Its huge plant collection
is diverse, with a comprehensive fruit
-growing collection, alpines, vegetables, bulbs as well as her-
baceous and woody plants.
One of the more recent additions has been the Glasshouse.
The huge cathedral-like glass structure covers an area equal in
size to 10 tennis courts and rises to 12m (40ft) in height. It has
three climatic zones, recreating tropical, moist temperate and
dry temperate habitats. It showcases Wisley‘s world class plant
collection providing an enhanced horticultural experience for
everyone who visits.
For those members who had never been to Wisley, the
presentation inspired them to visit and for those who had,
it encouraged them to return.

Report by Gill Fearon

Heroes and Villains‘ was the title of our last meeting. Each of us
chose a character who has been alive during the last 50 years
and described that person without divulging the name. The rest
of us then had to guess the identity of the person. Some of us
stuck strictly to the title, whilst others chose people who they
admired and we ended up with quite a diverse selection.
Amongst the heroes we had: Rosa Parks, the black lady in the
USA who refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man;
Christopher Reeve, Superman, who fought to help disabled
people after being paralysed himself; Mother Teresa; Jonas Salk,
who developed the Polio vaccine; Oscar Romero, a Catholic
Archbishop in El Salvador who sacrificed his life in helping the
poor and oppressed; Bill Gates, who, using his success and
wealth, has done an enormous amount to help the poor and
disadvantaged; Christiaan Barnard who performed the first
heart transplant; and the discoverers of DNA, James Watson
and Francis Crick. Amongst the villains we had: Ernest Marples,
a former Minister of Transport who led a life of crime in his later
years; and Mandy Rice-Davies, who I‘m sure needs no
introduction!
Other characters were those we admired for different reasons,
but are not actually heroes in the accepted sense. These
included: Julie Walters, Englebert Humperdink, The Queen, Sam
Wanamaker, Helen Mirren, John McEnroe and Bill Bryson. We
then had a discussion on the definition of a hero and concluded
that it has changed over the years, mainly due to the influence
of the media. It is important to have someone to look up to and
admire, but that person need not be a hero. We decided that
being brave does not necessarily make one a hero, e.g.explorers
like Ranulph Fiennes, but people who have done something for
others beyond the call of duty and possibly without regard for
their own safety. Yet another thought provoking evening!
Our next meeting is a light-hearted one – it‘s called ‗Back to the
60s‘ and we shall be dressing up, eating 60s style food and
trying to answer some questions on the 60s!

THE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
Reported by Ilene Iles

The Annual Lunch took place at BCOT on the 10th February

at 12 noon and was attended by 49 Members who enjoyed
a delicious meal. This was arranged by Helen Rolton in her
usual efficient way, as were the transport arrangements by
Val Denny.
Everyone returned to Sherfield Village Hall at approximately
3 p.m. and the Bring and Buy Sale which should have taken
place at the January Meeting went ahead.
Dee Bulpitt, our President, opened the Business Meeting at
3.30 p.m., and gave thanks to Helen and Val for their hard
work organising the lunch which all who attended had
enjoyed. She then mentioned our Charity Collection in
December for ―Help for Heroes‖ and the families of those
from RAF Odiham serving in Afghanistan via The Salvation
Army; a letter of thanks received from Rody and Bob Politt
for our participation in the Christmas Tree Festival and a
―thank you‖ for the cheque sent to our County office for
ACWW (for a WI internal project).
Jerusalem was sung, the Minutes read and signed,
correspondence dealt with; reports given; our trip to
Salisbury in April discussed and mention of a possible visit
to Millett‘s Farm some time in June. Dee remarked that
there would be a short walk on Thursday, 11th February –
somewhere not too muddy! Those interested to be in
the Car Park at 11 a.m. The Business Meeting closed at
4.15 p.m. and was followed by tea and home-made biscuits
and another opportunity to visit the Bring and Buy tables.
NEXT MEETING - Wednesday, 3rd March 2010.
