LED LIGHT CHASER

ABSTRACT:
This is the circuit of a simple LED chaser. The LEDs lights one by one for a period of 1
second and the cycle repeats giving the running light appearance. The circuit uses two ICs
(one is 555) to drive the LEDs. This two way LED running lights uses 12 LED lamps,
arranged in 2 rows, each row of 6 LEDs. A green one and a red one, alternatively use a
different colour for this. This circuit have 2 IC, IC1-555 is frequency generator. This IC-555
is a highly stable device for generating accurate time delays or oscillation. Additional
terminals are provided for triggering or resetting if desired. In the time delay mode of
operation, the time is precisely controlled by one external resistor and capacitor. For a stable
operation as an oscillator, the free running frequency and duty cycle are accurately controlled
with two external resistors and one. The 555 IC will operate in astable mode with a frequency
of 14Hz. The 555 IC in the circuit is used as a clock pulse generator to provide input clock
pulses to the counter IC 4017. The IC 555 in the circuit operates at a frequency of 14Hz,
which means that it produces about 14 clock pulses every second to the IC 4017 .The circuit
may be triggered and reset on falling waveforms, and the output circuit can source or sink up
to 200 mA.by this frequency can adjust at 10K-potentiometer output of IC1 through R-100
ohms in to pin 14 of IC-4017. The IC-4017 is Decade counter with 10 decoded outputs IC.
The 4017 is designed to drive higher current loads, so it is OK to connect LEDs with series
resistors directly to its outputs. Which its output glowing will slide down each position, by
begin from output at 1 is pin 3, 2, 4, 7, 10, 1, 5, 6, 9 and 11 in sequence.
Whenever a clock pulse is received at the clock input of IC 4017 counter, the counter
increments the count and activates the corresponding output PIN. When count is zero, PIN-3
is HIGH, which means LED-1 will be ON and all the other LEDS are OFF. After the next
clock pulse, PIN-2 of IC 4017 is HIGH, which means that LED-2 will glow and all the other
LEDs can be turned OFF. This repeats and the LEDs turn ON and OFF successively on each
clock pulse thereby producing a circling effect which I have demonstrated in the animation
above. This circuit can be housed on a general purpose PCB or a strip board and the LEDs in
the circuit are to be arranged in a circular shape. Make sure that you arrange the LEDs in
order with LED-1 first, LED-2 second and so on up to LED-12. Arrange the LEDs in order
and solder it onto a PCB.
