TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

PAGE TWO

The theme of our readings

today is making choices.
Our lives are a series of daily
choices; we make many decisions, decisions with regard to faith, family life,
relationships, and so on. The decisions we make
determine how we live our lives and whom we will
serve.
In todays first reading Joshua challenges the Israelites who have entered the Promised Land to
make a choice. He invites them to reaffirm their
Covenant relationship with Yahweh by reminding
them of what God had done for them in rescuing
them from slavery in Egypt, providing for their
survival in the desert, and giving them victory
over their enemies. God had been their Deliverer,
Provider and Protector. Joshua's challenge to the
Israelites was to decide, then and there, whom
they would serve, the gods of their fathers, or Yahweh, the God Who had done so much for
them. They had to choose the God of Israel or choose
to reject Him in favor of the idols that their fathers
had worshiped. Then, Joshua set the example for
the rest of Israelites: . . . [As] for me and my household, we will serve the LORD (Joshua 24:15). Joshuas challenge prefigured the choice the apostles
had to make in todays Gospel.

AUGUST

In the second reading, Paul gives us the criteria

for our daily moral choices regarding our families,
our parish community and in civil society. He
urged the Ephesians to use the criteria for a successful marriage in all spheres of Christian life.
The husband should use the authority that society
gives him over his family, not to dominate and
seek his own selfish satisfaction, but rather to aid
in the salvation and spiritual development of his
family. Paul uses the image of a marriage relationship primarily to express the bond that exists between Christ and the Church. In addition, he uses
the image of marriage to describe the relationship
that should exist among believers. Those who enter into the Covenant of Marriage should love and
submit to one another in mutual care and respect,
just as Christ submitted himself to the Church.
In the Gospel we see that the people failed to understand Jesus assertion that He is the Bread of
Life. What He was trying to tell them was that we
must accept Him totally, without any conditions
or reservations. They said to Him, This is a hard
teaching. Who can accept it?" (John 6:60). They were
actually offended by his teaching. Peter, however,
understood what Jesus was saying and said, "Lord,
to whom we shall go? You have the words of

eternal life (John 6:68). Peters statement was totally faith based. He accepted Jesus teachings and
decided to follow him because God was with him,
and Peter was totally committed to God. Faith is
not simply a set of ideas to be held on to. It is a
living relationship with a Person and His vision of
life. It is a relationship that needs to grow and
deepen over time. It is a relationship that has to
be constantly re-appraised in a constantly changing world. We must hear Peters words to Jesus
resounding through the centuries: To whom shall
we go? You have the words of eternal life. Is God
part of your decision making process? When we
invite Godwho deeply cares about us and about
what we dointo the decision-making process, we
find the freedom to make the best choice.

Daily Prayer for Priests

O Jesus,
I pray for your faithful and fervent priests;
For your unfaithful and tepid priests;
For your priests laboring at home or
Abroad in distant mission fields.
For your tempted priests;
For your lonely and desolate priests;
For your young priests;
For your dying priests;
For the souls of your priests
in Purgatory.
But above all, I recommend to you
The priests dearest to me;
The priest who baptized me;
The priests who absolved me from
my sins;
The priests at whose Masses
I assisted and who gave me
Your Body and Blood in
Holy Communion;
The priests who taught and
instructed me;
All the priests to whom I am indebted
in any other way
(especially...)
O Jesus, keep them all close
to your heart,
And bless them abundantly
in time and in Eternity
Amen
