the listening and speaking skills.
English is taught as a second language in all Malaysian primary and secondary
schools. The mastery of English is essential for pupils to gain access to information and
knowledge written in English. In line with the governments policy on strengthening
English, the curriculum has been designed to produce pupils who will be proficient in the
language in the language. This curriculum stresses the development of critical literacy.
Teachers will provide opportunities for pupils to question and evaluate texts that they
listen to, read or view.
Overall, the English Language Curriculum for Primary Schools aims to equip
pupils with basic language skills to enable them to communicate effectively in a variety
of contexts thats appropriate to the pupils level of development. There are few
objectives in general, pupils are able:

The aim of the KSSR English syllabus is to specify and highlight the essential
knowledge, skills, understandings and strategies that pupils need to learn. Learning
Standards describe in detail the degree or quality of proficiency that pupils need to
display in relation to the Content Standards for a particular year.

Listening and speaking are seen as core skills of early literacy. Through these skills,
students will able to listen carefully and also speak from the basic level of sound, word,
phrase and structural sentences in various situational contexts. Besides that, students
will master stress, rhythm and intonation patterns and how to use them correctly.
Students with these skills are confident and able to pronounce words and speak
confidently with the correct stress, rhythm and intonation. Another vital reason for
students to dominate these skills is that they can listen and respond appropriately in
formal and informal situations for a variety of purposes.
One of the major differences between KSSR and KBSR is that the way the curriculum
is written. For KSSR, curriculum is written based on content and learning standards
meanwhile for KBSR, the curriculum is written based on learning outcomes. Other than
that, Sound System in KBSR is replaced by a broader and more focused Basic Literacy
with an emphasis on Phonics; focuses on four language skills.

Justification
There are four main language skills that are being highlighted and focused in KSSR
which are listening, speaking, writing and reading. The aim is to produce Students with
good listening and speaking skills that are able to communicate fluently and accurately.
They are able to use the right stress and pronounce a word correctly. In KBSR, listening
and speaking was abandoned and are not given importance, but KSSR is totally vice
versa as it is given importance as an interaction tool. With good listening and speaking
skills, students are able to communicate confidently in public. KSSR is the best way to
produce students who are all-rounder.
