1824 i n A l t o n a , died o n 10 M a r c h 1910 i n Leipzig,
is o n e o f t h o s e figures o f G e r m a n r o m a n t i c i s m w h o
l i v e d t h r o u g h several m u s i c h i s t o r i c a l epochs w i t h out being i n any way influenced b y the n e w tendencies. B o r n i n t h e e a r l y r o m a n t i c e r a , h e e x p e r i e n c e d
t h e c r e a t i v e c a r e e r s o f s u c h o p p o s i t e p e r s o n a l i t i e s as
C h o p i n a n d S c h u m a n n , B r a h m s a n d L i s z t , as w e l l as
the d e v e l o p m e n t o f the v i r t u o s o a n d o f middle-class
salon music.
T a u g h t b y his father, C a r i Reinecke w h o never
a t t e n d e d s c h o o l b e g a n b y c o n c e r t i z i n g as a v i o l i nist a n d pianist, before h i s r o v i n g life w a s b r o u g h t
t o a h a l t i n 1 8 6 0 b y h i s a p p o i n t m e n t s as d i r e c t o r o f
Leipzig's G e w a n d h a u s concerts a n d professor at t h e
Conservatoire. Prior to this h e had travelled extensively: i n 1845 h e t o u r e d h a l f o f E u r o p e ; a year later
he became court pianist i n Copenhagen, where he
made friends w i t h Niels W . Gade. F u r t h e r concert
tours w e r e f o l l o w e d b y posts a t t h e C o n s e r v a t o i r e ,
i n B a r m e n a n d i n Breslau. F r o m Leipzig, Reinecke
t r a v e l l e d as s o l o i s t a n d c o n d u c t o r t o D e n m a r k , E n g l a n d a n d Russia, a m o n g o t h e r countries. Reinecke's
r e p u t a t i o n as a t e a c h e r e x t e n d e d f a r b e y o n d G e r m a n speaking countries. H i s pupils included I. Albeniz,
L.Janacek, E . Grieg, C h r . S i n d i n g and J Svendsen.
A d i s t i n g u i s h e d M o z a r t player, C a r i R e i n e c k e was
f a m o u s f o r his p o p u l a r cadenzas t o several o f M o z a r t ' s
p i a n o c o n c e r t i , a n d as a c o m p o s e r o f p i a n o p i e c e s
for teaching purposes. Undeservedly neglected, o u t
o f p r i n t a n d f o r g o t t e n , his i n s t r u m e n t a i w o r k s are at
last e n j o y i n g a r e v i v a l . T h e y i n c l u d e t h e sensitively
romantic Flute Sonata "Undine" op. 167 (Amadeus
B P 7 6 0 ) , n o w a m a i n s t a y o f t h e r e p e r t o i r e , five
warm-blooded, melodious a n d intricately w r o u g h t
s t r i n g quartets ( s p a n n i n g 6 7 years), a T r i o f o r oboe,
h o r n a n d p i a n o o p . 1 8 8 , 3 F a n t a s y Pieces f o r v i o l a
and piano op. 4 3 ( B P 452), a n da Trio op. 2 6 4 for
clarinet, v i o l a a n d p i a n o ( B P 4 5 3 ) . H i s large o u t p u t
as a c o m p o s e r s o m e 2 8 0 w o r k s i s p a i r e d w i t h
b o o k s a n d a r t i c l e s s u c h as " A d v i c e a n d H i n t s f o r
Y o u n g Musicians" or " T h e B e e t h o v e n P i a n o Sonatas:
Letters t o a F r i e n d " , w h i c h i n t r o d u c e d m a n y readers
t o a n u n d e r s t a n d i n g o f classical m u s i c .
C a r i Reinecke's F l u t e C o n c e r t o D - d u r , op. 2 8 3
( B P 3 1 3 ) was w r i t t e n i n 1 9 0 8 , a t t h e age o f 8 4 ! T h e
nostalgie, serene a n d elegiac C o n c e r t o is perfectly
s u i t e d t o t h e expressive possibilities o f t h e i n s t r u m e n t . I t i s as m u c h p a r t o f t h e r e p e r t o i r e as t h e
p r e s e n t Ballade for Flute and orchestra, op. 288,
w h i c h after a n i m m e n s e o u t p u t a n d f o l l o w i n g the
C o n c e r t o - was t h e master's s w a n - s o n g . T h e w o r k ' s
sweep is ravishingly b e a u t i f u l ! T h e sources f o r o u r
n e w e d i t i o n w e r e t h e first p r i n t o f t h e s c o r e a n d t h e
composer's o w n p i a n o reduction.
