Evam me sutam
Thus have I heard:
ekam samayam Bhagav
On one occasion the Blessed One,
Svatthiyam viharati Jetavane, Anthapindikassa rme
was living at Anathapindika's monastery at Jeta Grove, near Savatthi.
Tena kho pana samayena, Svatthiyam aataro bhikkh
At that time, at Savatthi, a certain monk
ahin dattho klakato hoti
had died bitten by a snake.
Atho kho sambahul bhikkh
Thereupon many monks
yena Bhavag, ten'upasankamimsu, upasankamitv
approached the Buddha,
Bhagavantam abhivdetv ekamantam nisidimsu
and having paid homage to Him, sat at one side.
Ekamantam nissinn kho te bhikkh
So seated, those monks spoke thus
Bhagavantam etadavocum
to the Blesed One:
Idha bhante Svatthiyam ataro bhikkh
"Venerable Sir, a certain monk at Savatthi
ahin dattho klakato hoti
had died bitten by a snake."
Naha nna so bhikkhave bhikkh
"Assuredly, monks", said the Buddha.
cattri ahirjakulni mettena cittena phari
"That monk has not suffused with thoughts of loving-kindness
Sacehi so bhikkhave bhikkh
to the four royal tribes of snakes.
cattri ahirjakulni, mettena cittena phareyya
Had he done so,
nahi so bhikkhave bhikkh
that monk would not have
ahin dattho klam kareyya
died of snake-bite.
Katamni cattri ahirjakulni
What are the four royal tribes of snakes?
Virpakkham ahirjakulam
The royal tribe of snakes called Virpakkha.
Erpatham ahirjakulam
The royal tribe of snakes called Erpatha.
Chabyputtam ahirjakulam
The royal tribe of snakes called Chabyputta.
Kanh gotamakam ahirjakulam
The royal tribe of snakes called Kanhgotamaka.
naha nna so bhikkhave bhikkh
Monks, that monk did not suffuse
imni cattri ahirjakulni, mettena cittena phari
with thoughts of loving-kindness to these four royal tribes of snakes.
Sace hi so bhikkhave bhikkh, imni cattri ahirjakulni
If indeed, O monks, that monk would have suffused
mettena cittena phareyya, na hi so bhikkhave bhikkh
these four royal tribes of snakes with a loving mind, O monks, that monk
ahin dattho klam kareyya
would not have died being bitten by a snake.
Anujnmi bhikkhave, imni cattri ahirjakulni
Monks, I enjoin you to suffuse with thoughts
