1. Executive Summary
Considering the heavy truck traffic coming into the premises, Renaissance
Industrial Park, Bhiwandi, it was already decided that Rigid Pavement Type to
be provided for the entire roadway network inside the industrial park. A
comparison report (Rigid Pavement Comparison, submitted to the client on
13th December 2010) evaluating various types of rigid pavements and a
decision was given that Rigid Pavement with Dowel Bars to be used for this
project. To fine tune the exact sizing of this pavement, a comparison was
requested by the client for various grades of concrete, its relevant thickness
and the same is given in this report. Considering common practices and
availability of materials, following grades were evaluated.
A) M30
B) M35
C) M40
D) M45
Also heat of the hydration will be less for M35 as compared to other higher
grades of concrete. That would reduce the surface cracks and would provide a
sustainable solution in long run.
Transverse cross slopes are provided at 2% to take care of roadway water
drainage. It is provided on the higher side as there are no longitudinal slopes
in certain portions of the roadway network and remaining longitudinal slopes
are also relatively gentle, in addition to heavy rainfall conditions.
2. Design Aspects
Following design aspects are considered while selecting and finalizing the
option for the rigid pavement design.

Contraction joints are provided both in transverse and longitudinal direction.
Transverse joint spacing is selected such that temperature and moisture
stresses do not produce intermediate cracking between joints.

6. Conclusion
Project Road Network has about 20 Km of length having different widths
ranging from 10 m to 37 m i.e. from 2 lanes to 8 Lanes. Keeping in mind cost
of the various options, option with Jointed Plain Concrete Pavement of
concrete Grade M35 & pavement thickness 250 mm is recommended. The
said design works provided the necessary compaction of sub grade and CBR
values are achived.
