These are very exciting tyres!

I drove in a test of AD08R tyres that were under
development. It felt like the tyres were just sucking
tight to the road surface. The tyres gave an easy
ride, and gave me very positive control. Even on
switchbacks, the tyres felt like they had a superb
hold on the road. The current AD08 tyres are great,
dont get me wrong, but these new ones seem
to give me a better feeling of grip and the overall
total sense is one of complete
control. These are just right.

The AD08Rs level of grip tenacity is higher by far.
First, on the straightaway, you can feel the tyres
gripping the road through the steering wheel. And
when youre going into a corner, weight moves
to the rear and the front end gets lighter. But with
a very good grip. I get that secure feeling that
Shell make it through the corner. The biggest
advantage is the tremendous control you have right
at the critical speed. When you go
into a corner at too high a speed,
the car still maintains its posture,

difference in basic performance if the tyres are of

In case you switch from JATMA standard to ETRTO standard reinforced tyres

The load index differs between JATMA standard and

ETRTO reinforced tyres even when the size is the same,
which means the suitable air pressure also differs. In case
you fit tyres of differing standards, it is necessary to fill
the tyres to a suitable pressure in accordance with that
particular standard.

Standards set by the European Tyre and Rim

Technical Organisation (ETRTO) that are being
employed in Europe. There are standards
for two types of tyres: standard tyres and
reinforced tyres.

ETRTO

It is necessary to fill up the tyres to the appropriate air pressure when fitting reinforced tyres (extra load tyres).

ETRTO reinforced tyres are set with higher air pressure and load capacity than ETRTO standard tyres. Air pressure
for ETRTO standard tyres is set at 250kPa when at maximum load capacity, whereas it is set at 290kPa for ETRTO
reinforced tyres. The higher air pressure enables a heavier load. It is necessary to increase the volume inside the
tyre in order to support heavier vehicles. However, with ETRTO reinforced tyres, the load index is large, making it
possible to support a heavier vehicle even when the tyres are the same size by increasing air pressure.

YOKOHAMA has developed self-supporting ZPS (Zero Pressure System) brand

runflat tyres exclusively constructed and contoured to simultaneously realize
reassuring handling, comfort and performance as well as runflat capabilities.
The tyres also provide ample mobility to enable a driver to keep on driving for a
certain distance at a reduced speed after inflation pressure loss.

Inch-up rules
Same tyre diameter

Inch-up is the process of increasing the inner

diameter of the tyre without changing the outer
diameter. By doing so, it is possible to further
enhance the features of driving, turning and stopping.
However, it is important to be knowledgable when
wanting to inch up. We recommend consulting with
your local tyre dealer first.

Same or bigger Load Index (LI)

It is crucial not to change the overall diameter of the tyres, which leads
to false speedometer readings when inch-up modification from the
original tyre size is undertaken. It is generally advised to keep the tyre
diameter within around 3% of the original tyre size.

efficiency when choosing a tyre?

What are the causes of

rolling resistance?

The effect of rolling resistance on fuel efficiency

has been calculated with the data shown at the
right. Assuming tyres have a 10% contribution
ratio to fuel efficiency, a 20% reduction in rolling
resistance will result in a 2% increase in fuel
efficiency.

1. Loss of energy due to tyre distortion

Under the weight of the vehicle, the part of the
tyre touching the road surface as well as the
surrounding parts become distorted. As the
tyre rotates, it experiences repeated cycles
of deformation and recovery, and dissipates
the resulting energy as heat. This accounts for
roughly 90% of total rolling resistance.

When tyres rotate during driving, they

go through a continuous cycle in which
they change shape and return to their
original shape. As a result, kinetic energy is
converted to heat, causing the tyres to get
hot and energy required for movement to
be wasted. This results in energy loss and
lower fuel efficiency.

In general, there is an inverse relationship

between the two elements: as one increases,
the other decreases.
However, technological innovation can improve
basic performance required of tyres while
minimizing rolling resistance.

TIRE TEST CENTER OF ASIA

TIRE TEST CENTER OF ASIA, located
in Rayong Province, Thailand, is
a large-scale proving ground with
peripheral road tracks to recreate
general road conditions that exist
around the world. Testing is mainly aimed at improving quality,
performance evaluation and high-speed driving trials for
passenger car, light truck and truck and bus tyres. Special
test courses and wet test courses are used for multi-faceted
simulations to test handling stability, fuel economy, durability,
noise, vibration, riding comfort and other driving criteria.

T]MARY (Takasu Motoring and Researching Yard) is a test

course for studless and other winter tyres. The expansive site
enables comprehensive testing and evaluation for braking,
maneuverability, cornering, frictional force and hill-climbing on
icy roads.

Shinshiro-Minami Plant

ISO/TS16949 is the quality management system standard required by major automobile industry
which is a prerequisite in order for us to develop our various businesses on a global scale. So
far, our three domestic plants, plus four plants overseas in which tyres for passenger cars,
trucks, and buses have obtained preceding certifications are manufactured; we are about to
expand this on a global stage.
Also, we are proactively facilitating so that our managerial level of supervisors of each division
can obtain qualification as internal auditor; we have newly registered 195 personnel in the fiscal

Our plans call for incorporating environmentally beneficial

features in all of our products by fiscal 2018. We adopted
original quantitative evaluation criteria for that goal in fiscal 2007
that span four categories: preventing global warming, reusing
and recycling resources, reducing the consumption of resources
and ensuring safety and comfort. In developing new products,
we mandate an average improvement for all the criteria of at
least 5% over the predecessor products, and we require that
all new products rank higher than their predecessors in all four
criteria. Environmentally beneficial products accounted for 83%
of our products in fiscal 2010 compared with 75% in fiscal 2009.
All of our new products in each of the past two fiscal years have
incorporated environmentally beneficial features.

The Electric vehicle (EV) racing car equipped with ADVAN A048participating for the first

Our Japanese operations eliminated landfill waste completely by the end of fiscal 2006, and we aim
to eliminate landfill waste at all of our overseas operations by the end of fiscal 2012. In April 2010,
our Chinese tyre plant in Hangzhou became our first overseas plant to eliminate landfill waste. Our
Philippine tyre plant eliminated landfill waste three months later. In Japan, we reuse all waste material
as raw materials or as fuel for energy recovery systems. All our Japanese plants phased out incineration
without effective utilization by the end of fiscal 2010, a year ahead of schedule.

Tyre inflation

Wear limit

Tyre inflation should be done in a safety cage.

Never inflate beyond 275kPa (2.75bar, 40psi) to seat beads.
Tyre performance may decline when foreign objects or water
enter the tyre. Before mounting a tyre, inspect and remove any
foreign objects and water inside of it.
Periodically drain water from the compressor, otherwise the
water may be transferred to the inside of the tyre.
Before inflating air and attaching the valve cap, make sure that
no air is leaking from the valve core, the tyre fits properly on its
rim and no air is leaking from around the valve.

Tyre use should be discontinued once the remaining tread

depth reaches 1.6mm, as shown by the tread wear indicator.
Change to new tyres before this happens.

Tyre damage
Never use a tyre under the following conditions and
replace tyres immediately:
If the tread is worn down to the tread wear indicator
If breaks in the fabric appear
If cords or wires are exposed

Point to note when choosing a tyre

Outer diameter of the wheel should be the same as the inner
diameter of the tyre.

Inspect for foreign objects and damage

Stones, gravel and other foreign objects stuck in the tyre
treads may damage the tyre. Remove foreign objects from the
tyre treads.
Such objects and obstacles in the road as potholes, glass,
metal, rocks, wood debris, and kerbstones which could
damage a tyre should be safely avoided.

Break-in period
Each shop contains tyres suitable for 4WDs, sedans, vans and luxury cars. Professional staff members are always on hand
in an environment befitting the YOKOHAMA brand so customers can feel at ease.

Make sure to break new tyres in by driving under 80km/h for

no less than 100km in the case of summer tyres.

Important points for safe driving

To enhance traffic safety and extend tyre life, YOKOHAMA
recommends driving safely and avoiding unnecessarily hard
acceleration, braking or cornering.
If you feel that the car is unstable or making any unusual noises
or vibrations, stop the car in a safe place and inspect its tyres.
Even if no visible defects are found, drive slowly and ask your
tyre dealer to inspect the tyres as soon as possible.
To enhance traffic safety, YOKOHAMA recommends driving
substantially slower under adverse weather or road conditions.
When inspecting the tyres, also check for degradation and
cracks in the valve. Be sure that the valve cap has been
fastened properly.

Keep your tyres away from direct sunlight and locations with
high temperature, high moisture, heavy electrical machinery,
welders, etc.

Adjust wheel balance to prevent abnormal vibration and

uneven wear.
Mount tyres according to the rotation direction specified on
the sidewall as indicated.
Use a torque wrench to fasten wheel nuts to the specified
torque. When using an impact wrench, do not tighten the nuts
too tightly. Check with a torque wrench.
After attaching the wheels to the vehicle and travelling 50100km, refasten the wheel nuts to the specified torque.
Make sure the tyre is not touching the vehicle body when you
attach it.
Never mount a tyre on a rim that is damaged or which has
been repaired by welding or brazing.
Do not mix different tyre size designations or constructions on
the same axle, except for limited use of temporary spare tyres.
Tyres should be mounted only by professionally trained persons.

Tyres should be stored in a cool, dry, and dark room with a

controlled environment.

Important notes on air pressure

Wheel alignment

Make sure to follow instructions in the car owners manual or

on the vehicle tyre information placard in the car to maintain
proper tyre pressure, particularly for driving on highways and
carrying heavy loads.
Never bleed or reduce air pressure when tyres are hot from
driving.
Over- or under-inflation is dangerous and could lead to
accidents or tyre damage.
Check tyre (including spare tyre) inflation pressure at least
once a month and before every long trip.

In the event of a problem with the suspension system of

a vehicle, driving stability may be compromised and the
tyres may wear abnormally. Please check and adjust wheel
alignment to make sure it is correct.

Direct sunlight or rain may cause a

change in color or cracking, etc.

It is not appropriate to store tyres where they are exposed to

conditions such as direct sunlight, rain, oil and heat. When storing tyres, it is important to remove air from the tyres and keep
them in a dark, cool place. Avoid places where there is direct
sunlight.

Keep tyres under cover to ensure water does not get inside tyres.
Do not keep tyres in places where they are likely to come in
contact with oil or water as well as be damaged or change shape.
Do not keep tyres near generators or batteries.
Do not store tyres over long periods since materials within tyres
become more likely to be discharged and stain the ground.
