TASK 3 : Reflection

Managing the Primary ESL Classroom (TSL3093) is an interesting course because it

focuses on classroom management besides pedagogy and methodology in teaching and
learning of English Language. This course is slightly close to Learners and Learning
Environment that we learned in last semester. The content of this course not only useful as a
reference for students attending university degree, but it is also beneficial for in-service teachers
like me in order to increase our professional development.
I realized that I have learned and gained a lot after reading and exploring the whole
course content. Basically, this course deals with theories of classroom management which are
democratic teaching, instructional management, congruent communication and assertive
tactics. To complete this course, we also need to deliver a presentation based on theories
related to classroom management. My lecturer, Pn. Kway Chui Kim constantly encourages me
and my friends to do a lot of researches in order to understand more. Her explanation regarding
the theories, approaches and skills learnt are very useful to me. Being a teacher with 18 years
experienced is not enough if I do not know how to manage my classroom well. Through my
reading, I learned that effective classroom management is necessary to produce effective
teaching and learning. There are numerous things that I learn including managing resources
and facilities in a classroom, effective communication skills and how to develop monitor and
maintain pupils behavior.
Being a student again, has given me a great opportunity to learn new knowledge to
implement in the classroom. There are many techniques and approaches that I could apply in
the classroom. I am totally agreed when people say that the way we manage the classroom and
pupils always reflect our credibility as the manager of the classroom.
My pupils always said that I am a fierce and strict teacher. I never compromise with them
if it concerns with their discipline misbehavior or undone homework. Of course, I never have any
problem in class control because none of my pupils make any interruptions or distract their
friends during my lesson. Maybe because I practice authoritarian teaching style in the
classroom. Nevertheless, after learning all these theories, I realize that there are certain areas
of practice that I should change. That is because, I can see a wide boundary between me and
my pupils by being stern all the time. Sometimes I feel very stressful when I am the one who do
the talking in the classroom. I need to force or threaten them to voluntarily answer the
questions. In my opinion, I should agree with Rudolf Dreikurs, when he said that sometimes we
encourage a behavior without knowing it.

In future, I think I should be more democratic rather than autocratic in the classroom so
that my pupils will have more freedom and space to share ideas and point out their view. I am
strongly believe that if the teacher and pupils have a good relationship and mutual trust, learning
and teaching will be more meaningful and enjoyable.
I also notice that my communication skill with my pupils was very harsh. I always yell at
them whenever they make mistakes or did not bring their books. Through my reading, I found
that verbal and non-verbal communication in the classroom is very essential to practice because
it can develop good personal relationship between teachers and pupils. I think I should apply
nonverbal communication in my lesson as it can save a lot of my energy and at the same time
the flow of teaching process will be smooth.
Theory of assertive discipline also quite interesting to implement in the classroom as it
encourages me to act assertively instead of aggressively. Being assertive means that I can build
positive relationship with my pupils speak politely to them and treat them fairly. I can also apply
congruent communication in my teaching style where I can interact appropriately to maintain
positive classroom behavior.
As a conclusion, teachers leadership styles always affect the manner of interaction in
the classroom. Effective classroom interaction depends on the conducive environment and the
effective physical management in the classroom. An interaction should be in diverse ways, so
the teacher needs to apply various teaching approaches , strategies and practice suitable
theories such as democratic leadership or being assertive .By mastering the knowledge in this
course, I am sure I would be able to optimize my teaching and learning session and boast my
pupils achievement. I would try my best to practice the theories learned and come out with an
effective management plan.
