Blue Coat Reporter 9.x Release Notes

Installing/Upgrading to This Release

Reporter 9.x is a new Reporter product that features an architecture that is not
compatible with previous Reporter versions. Therefore, you cannot perform an
upgrade to Reporter 9.x from previous Reporter versions. To view reports that
contain older data, you must reprocess legacy/archived log files into Reporter 9.x
databases. You can, however, run a previous Reporter version on the same server
as Reporter 9.x. This enables you to create new databases for data going forward
and transition legacy data into new databases at your own pace.
The following features and tools associated with previous releases are not
available in Reporter 9.1.1:

IM/Streaming/Chat reports and Risk Groups (to be added in a future 9.x

release; to retain these databases, you can simultaneous run Reporter 8.3.x and
9.1.x).

CIFS log support

CLI administration/report generation

HTML e-mail reports

Custom log formats

Any v7 reports

About Licensing
Reporter 9.x features three available licenses:

Standard (default)Installing and running Reporter requires no license;

however, the default mode (also known as Standard License) limits log
processing to 50 million concurrent log lines. If log processing reach this limit,
Reporter halts processing until lines are removed from databases (or you
install a higher level license).

EnterprisePurchasing and installing an Enterprise License enables Reporter

to process up to 2.5 billion concurrent log lines.

PremiumPurchasing and installing an Enterprise License enables Reporter to

process up to 10 billion log lines.

After purchasing an Enterprise or Premium license, refer to the installation

procedure in the Blue Coat Reporter 9.1.x Initial Configuration Guide.

Blue Coat Reporter 9.x Release Notes

System Compatibilities
Reporter 9.x supports the following 3rd party systems and products.
Note:

Blue Coat Reporter 9.x can run on VMWare systems. To be precise,

Reporter runs on supported Windows or Linux OSes, which might themselves be
running on VMWare systems. Reporter does not require awareness of VMWare.

Servers
General

32-bit operating systems

64-bit operating systems

Important: 64-bit databases are not compatible with 32-bit databases.
Therefore, if you process logs on a 32-bit system and migrate to a 64-bit
system, you must reprocess all of your logs to generate new, compatible
databases.

Windows

XP

2003 Windows Server

2008 Windows Server

Note: For 32-bit servers, Blue Coat recommends Windows 2003 users use the
/3GB switch option to allocate more memory to the Reporter service. For
details of how to accomplish this (with the boot.inifile), see:
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/platform/server/PAE/PAEmem.mspx

Linux

32-bit: Red Hat Enterprise AS/ES 4 and AS/ES 5.

64-bit: Red Hat Enterprise AS release 4 and AS 5 (Nahant Update 4 or 5)

Note:

Reporter only works with Very Secure FTP Daemon (VSFTPD).

Browsers
Blue Coat recommends the following browsers for Reporter access:

Mozilla Firefox 3.x

Internet Explorer 8.x

Other browsers, such as Firefox 2.x and IE 7.x, will work, but Reporter users
might experience slower performance.

Global Reporter Limitations

This section provides known Reporter system operational limits that apply to all

FTP
On some Windows servers, the firewall might prohibit large FTP file transfers.
This causes FTP Log Sources to abort log processing and unload because of the
fatal error. Disabling the FTP firewall, or possibly increasing a restrictive custom
timeout, allows the Log Source to download the entire log file.
For more information, see the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article ID:
931130 "Error message when you use and FTP client to download a large
file from an FTP server: "Connection closed by remote host"

Double-byte Characters
Double-byte characters in access logs are currently not supported in Reporter 9.x.
Note:

The Reporter Management Console supports Chinese/Japanese Operating

Systems and also supports Chinese/Japanese display in the Reporter user
interface, but the required double-byte characters are not stored or processed.

Reporter 9.1.1 Contents

Reporter 9.1.1 is the first release in the Reporter 9.x product line; it features a
redesigned user interface and new log processing architecture.
This section contains the following Reporter 9.1.1 topics:

"New Features" on page 7

"Known Issues" on page 8

"Documentation Errata" on page 9

New Features
Reporter 9.1.1 introduces the following new features:

New User Interface

For Reporter 9.x, Blue Coat redesigned the user interface. The new design features
more intuitive feature placement, provides extensive flexibility, and operates with
faster response times than previous Reporter versions.

Performance Increase
Reporter 9.x provides at least five times (5x) faster report generation over
previous versions (assuming adherence to recommended sizing guidelines).

Role-Based Access and External Authentication (LDAP)

Reporter 9.x provides a new role-based access control (RBAC) system that enables
Reporter administrators to create database and users independently of each other,
define enterprise roles, and assign users to those roles. Furthermore, you can
configure Reporter to communicate with a backend LDAP server and assign role
access based on user group affiliations.

Intuitive Filter Operation

In Reporter 9.x, a user can access a filter panel directly from each report page and
apply filter criteria; Reporter displays valid filter options (static and dynamic
values) based on the database contents.

Online Help System

Reporter 9.x features a topic-based Help System that can be called from help
buttons (?) on each page in the Reporter Management Console. Each topic
provides detailed information and/or procedures and some topics link to other

relevant topics within the system. Furthermore, the Help System varies based on
user access. Users who access Reporter with administrative credentials receive the
entire Help System; users who access Reporter with role-based credentials see
only Help System topics related to report generation tasks and personal settings.

Known Issues
This section lists all issues that Blue Coat is aware of in Reporter 9.1.1.1.

Installation
The README file that displays as part of the installation process states that
Reporter 9.1 supports Internet Explorer 6 and 7 and Firefox 2 and 3. As stated in
"Browsers" on page 5, Blue Coat recommends IE6 and Firefox 3 for the best
performance.

Languages

Reporter 9.1.1 supports English, Japanese, and Chinese; however,

functionality is limited. For example, you cannot export reports to PDF or CSV
formats, not all of the English words in the user interface are translated, and
Online Help System is in English. A subsequent Reporter release will provide
full foreign language support.

Log Sources

If a Windows (NTFS) file system is Samba mounted on Linux, Reporter cannot

see log files in the directory through the file browser. (B#109876)

For logs that are sent over FTP from the log server to the Reporter server,
processing halts after encountering a corrupt log_name.log.gz file. (B#115722)

Reporter on Linux cannot move processed log files (post-processing option)

from the log source directory to another directory that is not on the same file
system. (SR 2-168246582)

Management Console

Some tool tip pop-ups, displayed when rolling the mouse over certain buttons
in the user interface, might not disappear. (B#110091)

Reports scheduled or archived by LDAP users do not display the username in

the Scheduled Tasks area. (B#116427)

During the installation process, if you specify an administration access

password that contains a mix of upper and lower-case characters and enter
the same verification password but with different case mixes, only the second
password is saved. For example: you enter AllowMe in the primary field and
AllowME in the verification field, Reporter saves AllowME as the access
password. If you specify mixed-case passwords, ensure you enter the exact
string twice.

If you attempt to edit a graph (Graph Options) and select to graph more than
one column, only the first column that is graphed exports to PDF. All of the
other columns displayed in graph in the browser do not display in the PDF.
(B#113740)

Web Server

When database creation wizard does not function when the log source
directory contains UTF-8 Encoded characters. (B#104705)
