Dr. James Red Duke Elementary

By Lindsay Peyton
Alvin
Independent
School District staff members and pupils recently
gathered with representatives of Memorial Hermann and the University
of Texas Health Science
Center at Houston to honor a man worthy of being
the namesake for a school.
Dr. James Red Duke,
85, however, was still in
shock.
Im of course humbled
that they would choose to
name a school after me,
he said. I dont know
what I did to warrant
this honor. Im deeply
touched.
The official dedication
for Dr. James Red Duke
Elementary, 2900 CR 59
in Manvel, was on Sept. 7.
The campus opened in August at the beginning of the
school year.
A renowned trauma
surgeon at Memorial
Hermann-Texas Medical
Center, Duke has received
numerous honors and
awards and is known for
his instrumental role in introducing Memorial Hermann Life Flight, which

trauma center to Houston.
Throughout his career, Duke has also been
a proponent of education,
whether instructing future surgeons from his
post as professor of surgery at the University of
Texas Health Science Center or carefully communicating details of a diagnosis to a patient.
Duke hosted a nationally syndicated television
program, Dr. Red Dukes
Health Reports, on
health-related topics.
Officials from Alvin
ISD believe that having
Dukes name on the front
of an elementary school is
a tting tribute for a doc-

tor dedicated to imparting

knowledge.
Elementary school is
such an important part of
a childs life, Duke said.
Its when they establish
critical thinking skills.
He still clearly recalls
his school experiences
growing up in Hillsboro
and can name the teachers who inspired him and
kept him in line.
I shall be forever grateful for them, he said. I
can still hear them in the
back of my mind.
After graduating from
Hillsboro High School,
Duke attended Texas
A&M University, where he
was a yell leader. He then

Friendswoods
credit rating boosted
By Allen Jones
The city of Friendswood
recently received a bump
in its credit rating, giving
potential investors more
condence that the city
would be able and more
likely to pay debt it takes
on.
Financial research and
analysis rm Standard
and Poors Ratings Services recently raised the
citys credit rating two
notches from AA- to AA+.

Friendswood has a stable

outlook based on its very
strong budgetary exibility and liquidity, S&Ps
credit analyst Edward McGlade said.
The outlook also reects
the agencys expectation
that the current Houston
metropolitan areas economy will not change signicantly in two years.
The S&P announced the
citys credit rating increase
Aug. 22.

he returned home, Duke
attended seminary in Fort
Worth but soon answered
a calling for a different career.
He obtained his medical degree in 1960 at the
University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in
Dallas.
Duke completed his
residency in general surgery at Dallas Parkland
Memorial Hospital, where
in 1963, he was part of the
trauma team to receive

Texas Gov. John Connally
in their motorcade.

Thousands of tourists are expected to ood

Houston for Super Bowl LI
in 2017, and hotels in northern Brazoria County and
near Friendswood are taking steps now to be ready.
Every hotel wants to
make sure they are refreshed and ready by Super Bowl 2017, said Manny
Patel, general manager of
Comfort Suites in Pearland, which underwent
upgrades to its 73 rooms
last year. This year we are
updating our lighting and
xtures, and next year we
are refreshing our lobby
and commons areas.
The goal, Patel said, is
to ensure the hotel is in
a competitive position to
attract Super Bowl ticket
holders who will be traveling to Houston for the
game at NRG Stadium.
A
quasi-national
holiday in America, the
popular National Football League game draws
crowds by the thousands
to host cities. The most
recent Super Bowl, XLVII in New Orleans, had
a paid attendance of more
than 82,500. Many of those
ticket holders were tourist
who lled New Orleans hotel rooms.
The 2017 game is becoming something of a
deadline for hoteliers, said

Sallie Sargent, executive

director of the Houston
Super Bowl bid committee, a nonprot planning
the NFL event. Pearland,
Alvin and other Houston
suburban communities
have been on the radar of
the Houston Super Bowl
bid committee since 2012
when it was established to
try and bring Super Bowl
LI to Houston. The bids
hotel footprint stretches
from Galveston to north
of The Woodlands. When
the Houston proposal was
drafted, the NFL required
potential host cities to
provide at least 19,000 hotel rooms. The Houston
Super Bowl bid provided
more than 20,000 rooms
when the NFL approved it
last May.
According to the Alvin
Convention and Visitors
Bureau website, eight hotels operate within Alvin.
In Pearland, 11 hotels offer 860 rooms. The city of
Friendswood has no hotels.
Patel, who also is on
the board for the Pearland
Convention and Visitors
Bureau, said he knows hoteliers in the city are working to prepare for the big
game in 2017.
The hotels in Pearland
are fairly new, having been
built within the last ve to
seven years. In addition to

Dr. Duke has also served
on the faculties at UT
Southwestern, Columbia
University in New York
and Nangarhar University
School of Medicine in Afghanistan.
As one of the rst faculty members of the
UTHealth Medical School,
he established the trauma
service at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, the schools primary
teaching hospital.
We started from
scratch and we put it together just one step at a
time, Duke said.
In 1976, he was instrumental in developing the
Life Flight helicopter program, the only hospitalbased air ambulance servicing southeast Texas.

It seemed like a good

idea, he recalled. Why
not use a helicopter to get
people in faster than on the
ground?
It was the second helicopter service in the country and the rst in the state.
Duke has been described by U.S. Rep. Ted
Poe, R-Houston, as John
Wayne in scrubs.
I am a frustrated cowboy, said Duke, who has
three daughters and a son.
I was born a hundred
years too late.
An ardent conservationist, Duke has served
as president of The Wild
Sheep Foundation, The
Boone and Crockett Club
and founder of the Texas
Bighorn Society, which has
been successful in reintroducing bighorn sheep to
West Texas.
In all his endeavors,

Duke said the most rewarding thing has been

caring for his patients.
I love to see them get
well and I hate to see them
suffer, he said.
A committee was
formed last school year to
select a name for the new
school, AISD spokesman
Daniel Combs said.
We had representatives
from the community, two
trustees from our board,
two of our teachers of the
year and two administrators on the committee, he
said.
We opened up to the
community the opportunity to name the campuses we had in the plans to
build.
One of the nominations
was for Duke. The name
went through an approval
process, and the board approved his name for the

make sure plenty of transportation is available for
guests. Patel said guests
would spend money at restaurants and retail outlets.
Everything you need

so, visitors dont have to
go far for shopping, dinning and entertainment.
We have franchise restaurants as well as mom-andpop establishments. Plus,
we are home to Killens

When people stay in

Kim Sinistore, executive

Dr. Duke, who is innovative and has been throughout his whole career, is an
ideal name for the campus.
The school follows an
approach called the engaged learning model,
which allows teachers

instruction techniques in
the way they think best for

Combs believes the

Having a role model

By Corey Roepken
Moving up to Class
6A may have held back
Friendswood so far this
season, but the Lady Mustangs refuse to be knocked
down.
Friendswood, the twotime defending Region III4A champion, has taken
some lumps it is not used
to as a new member of the
UILs largest classication.

That doesnt mean district

play has to be the same
way, rst-year coach Kylie
Kerlin said.
The Lady Mustangs (1114, 0-1) lost their district
opener, but it took Clear
Falls ve games to nish
them off. They faced Brazoswood earlier this week,
but back-to-back matches
against Clear Springs and
Clear Creek Friday and
Tuesday promise to tell

them a lot more about their

chances to make the playoffs.
Non-district matches
against The Woodlands,
Pearland, Plano West, Dallas Bishop Lynch and Coppell have prepared Friendswood for life 24-6A, one of
the states toughest.
We learned a lot of
valuable things that are
really going to help us in
district, Kerlin said. If
we did have any down
moments we learned a lot
from them. Whether we
played well or werent in

So far, so good for Manvels football team. That

might be awful news for
the rest of Texas.
Coach Kirk Martin and
his staff revisited their offseason training program
after being outmuscled
against Katy in last years
playoffs. The Mavericks
appear to be reaping the
benets thanks to a pair
of 25-point triumphs over
traditional powers North
Shore and Westeld.
We did mostly the
same things (during the
summer), but we preached
heavy squats and the
mindset of getting after it,
Martin said. We stayed on
our star players. We were
harder on them than ever
before. If youre harder on
those guys then the rest of
them will follow. We did
not allow any lazy steps.
The coaches, of course,
were not allowed to require the players to show
up. That did not stop the
players from coming. Attendance was higher than
ever, perhaps because the
players saw how much of
a difference strength and
conditioning made in their
blowout loss to Katy.
The offseason momentum has carried over into
the regular season. Manvel
had little trouble winning
its rst two games. With
Katy losing last week, the
Mavericks may even be
viewed as the team to beat
within Region 3.
Like with any team,

there are
things to
work on.
Manvel
committed
too many
penalties
Martin
for Martins
liking in the
rst game but improved
in the second game. The
center-to-quarterback exchange has been an issue,
too.
The Mavericks are
likely to breeze through
much of the District 22-6A
schedule, but that doesnt
mean they can take it easy.
Winning two non-district
games doesnt count for
anything in the long run
if they cant keep the momentum going all the way
into the playoffs.
Manvel faces Dobie at 7
p.m. Friday at Alvin Memorial Stadium.
Galloways encore
Dawson quarterback
Vance Galloway proved
last week he is not going to
be a one-hit wonder. One
week after the most monstrous of games against
Magnolia West, Galloway
threw four touchdown
passes in a 45-7 victory
over Alvin in both teams
district openers. Galloway was 18-of-22 passing
for 345 yards. Three of his
touchdown passes came
in the rst 18 minutes. He
also rushed six times for 57
more yards.
Fridays performance
followed his seven-touchdown showing against
Magnolia West. In which
he passed and rushed for
547 yards. Dawson faces
Sam Rayburn on the road
at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Mustangs see tough road

Kerlin from page 5

sync we learned a lot from

those times on the court.
Having a first-year
coach would be tough for
any program, but the Lady
Mustangs are dealing with
signicant roster turnover
also. Sarah Redding is an
elite player, but she had to
move from middle blocker
to outside hitter this season. Seniors Rachel Barlow and Nadia Posluszny
are playing middle blocker
at the varsity level for the
rst time.
The entire non-district

schedule was all about

getting the new players
comfortable on the varsity
team.
Friendswood started
off with a relative bang at
the Texas Volleyball Invitational in Pearland. It
went 3-3 with two victories
coming against Plano West
and Fort Bend Austin.
The Lady Mustangs even
took one game out of three
against Coppell.
Redding and Kelly Colwell have been the top attackers. Colwell also is one
of the teams top defensive players. Setter Sarah

Thomas has been a contributor on defense, too.

Like with any team
Friendswood has had its
ups and downs, but Kerlin
said this is the part of the
season where the team has
to keep its down moments
to a minimum.
We need to be consistent in district play, Kerlin
said. We have to use the
momentum for as long as
we can. We have to string
some points together. That
makes or breaks you in
those tight games.
Friendswood is used to
winning most of the tight

games but will not nd it

to be as easy now that its in
Class 6A. Matches will be
more competitive and intense. The Lady Mustangs
no longer are the team to
beat. Kerlin said that does
not have to keep them from
winning big matches.
My team does not have
to be the best in district. It
is to be the best team in the
gym for each match, Kerlin said. If we can do that
every night in district well
be all right.

has applied to the Texas Commission on
Environmental Quality (TCEQ) for a renewal of
Texas Pollutant Discharge Elimination System
(TPDES) Permit No. WQ0012332001, which
authorizes the discharge of treated domestic
wastewater at an annual average flow not to
exceed 2,400,000 gallons per day. TCEQ received
this application on March 3, 2014.
The facility is located 0.1 mile east of the Magnolia
Street and Cullen Parkway intersection, accessible
on Magnolia Street, Pearland, in Brazoria County,
Texas 77584. The treated effluent is discharged
to a drainage ditch; thence to North Fork Marys
Creek; thence to Marys Creek; thence to Clear
Creek Above Tidal in Segment No. 1102 of the San
Jacinto-Brazos Coastal Basin. The unclassified
receiving water use is minimal aquatic life use for
the drainage ditch and intermediate aquatic life
for North Fork Marys Creek and Marys Creek.
The designated uses for Segment No. 1102 are high
aquatic life use and primary contact recreation.
The TCEQ Executive Director has completed the
technical review of the application and prepared a
draft permit. The draft permit, if approved, would
establish the conditions under which the facility
must operate. The Executive Director has made
a preliminary decision that this permit, if issued,
meets all statutory and regulatory requirements.
The permit application, Executive Directors
preliminary decision, and draft permit are available
for viewing and copying at Brazoria County Public
Library, Pearland Branch, 3522 Liberty Drive,
Pearland in Brazoria County, Texas. This link to
an electronic map of the site or facilitys general
location is provided as a public courtesy and
