What is Time Management?

The definition of the concept of time has been associated with ambiguities
and even contradictions. For instance, time has been described as time nothing
more than the occurrence of events in sequence, on after another (Olpin and
Hessen, 2012, p.167), and a resource that, when lost or misplaced, is gone forever
(Kerzner, 2009, p.286).
The definition of time management has been offered as the process of
skilfully applying time to finish and perfect a specific activity within time
constraint (Harris, 2008, p.22). However, there is no single definition of time that
fully captures all aspects of the concept.
Becker and Mustric (2008) divide time into two categories: quantitative and
qualitative. It can be specified that quantitative time is seen to represent time as
quantities, that is, time can be measured and counted into seconds, minutes, days,
weeks, months, and years (Wu, 2009, p.5). Qualitative time, on the other hand, is
associated with a meaning of an activity the time is spent on.
Similar to the concept of time, there are varying opinions amongst secondary
data authors regarding the definition and role of time management. For instance, it
has been noted that time management is about taking charge, carefully,
consciously, purposefully not shrinking from difficulties, but engaging them
(Kristan, 2010, p.4). Moreover, some secondary data authors also note that time
management is not an end itself. It is the means to an end. When linked with
setting and meeting goals it provided a way of getting really high achievement out
of individuals and others with whom they come into contact (Pearson and Thomas,
2010, p.49).

1. What is time management according to Harris (2008)?

2. What are the two categories of time? How do the two categories differ?
3. For you, what is time management?
4. What do you usually do to manage your time?

Thought to Ponder!
Each person has the same number of seconds available
in a day. However, it is up to each of us to determine
how we are going to use (or manage) our time.

Try to document how you utilize your time especially when you have no time
constraints and obligations. Think back over the last 24 hours and calculate how
time you have spent on the following activities. After you have taken a minute to
think, pair up with a seatmate and share your response.

Student Worksheet: HOW DO I USE MY TIME? Part I. Blanks are provided for
you to add other categories if needed.

I spent __________ minutes on sleeping. ________ minutes with my

family. __________ minutes eating ________ minutes on TV or video
games. __________ Minutes talking to my friends
_________ minutes on ___________________. __________ minutes
on activities. _________ Minutes on ___________________

First things, first!

Have you ever grasped the idea on how important time
management is? Yes or not at all, try to describe the importance of
time management by completing the task below. Write your
observations and conclusions after having the activity. Enjoy!

Rocks in a Jar Activity

Materials: Empty glass jar, large rocks, Pebbles, and Sand
Empty glass jar: The glass jar in the demonstration is the amount of time available in a
typical week. Now remember that no matter how powerful, famous, rich, or insignificant
any of us are, we all have the same sized jars; hence, we all have the same amount of
time in a given week to get things done. One of the things that we tend to forget is that
we have a finite amount of time to work with. By visualizing our time as an empty
container, it can help us better understand and, more importantly, better fill that container
with the things that matter the most.

Try this activity two ways.

1

First, put in the smallest items (the sand); then try to get the pebbles to fit; finally,
see if you can fit any of the large rocks into the jar (be sure there is not enough
room in the jar when done this way).

2 Put in the biggest items first (most important priorities), then the next biggest, and
finally, the smallest (lowest priorities); in this order, everything should fit in the jar.
Questions to consider:
1

What were your observations while conducting the first activity? What about the

second activity?
When you put the sand first before those big rocks? Did it fit to the jar? What

about when you put rocks and feeble before the sand, did it also fit?
Considering the description of the empty jar, what do you think are the sand,

feeble and rocks symbolizes of?

What is now your conclusion about the activity? Did it give you hints on how to
set priorities? In what way?

5 Is managing time an important thing to consider in your daily living? Why?

Do the following tasks below.

Create questions regarding the problems that you might encounter in setting your

priorities
List the things that you will do to set your priorities using command/request

sentences.
Make your own quotation that you will tell to yourself that you are eager to
accomplish your priorities.

Lesson 2- Barriers to Effective Time Management

Introduction:

Hi! You are now in the second lesson of your module. This is still taken from the
journal written by Stephen Covey, an American educator and author wherein you will be
acquainted with the things that hinders and affects the effectiveness of managing your
time. Now and then, we might be hearing an echoes of these questions Why does it
difficult for me to accomplish assignments? I am having trouble finishing my task, how
can I avoid last- minute stress? These are just a few of the dilemma that we usually
encounter. During your previous lesson you learned about time management now, you
will get to know many things that hampers you in achieving the peak of success.
Compose yourself and get ready!

After completing this lesson, you are expected to:

a. Identify the barriers that hinders you
b. Provide solution to the identified barriers
c. Identify the difference between linking verbs and helping verbs

DIRECTION:

Read the article below. Then, answer the questions

provided.

Barriers to Effective Time Management

Time management is a skill that takes a lot of practice, and there are many things
that can get in the way. Here are some barriers to effective time management.
Anxiety-Anxiety can be a nuisance, but it can also feel completely overwhelming.
Severe anxiety can result in avoiding work or school, or even isolating from friends
and family.
Expectations- College comes with a number of built-in expectations, deadlines, and
examinations. Combine these academic pressures with expectations from parents
and friends and it can be easy to lose sight of what you really want. Managing time
effectively quickly becomes impossible when youre trying to satisfy everyone
elses goals.
Perfectionism- Motivation to manage time effectively decreases when youre trying
to be perfect. Many people give up on what theyre doing rather than finishing it
through and failing by not meeting their perfectionistic standards.
Laziness - Society today is full of distractions. Video games, internet, and friends are
three big examples. Combine these distractions with the newfound freedom that
comes with college life and you have a giant barrier to functioning effectively in
school.
While there are many barriers to time management, one of the common themes
among these barriers is avoidance. Developing good time management skills is like
building a muscleit may be difficult at first but it will get easier the more you
practice.
1. What could be the effect of having too much anxiety? How bad can it get or affect
you?
2. Have you been so pressured before causing you to mess you up in managing
your time?
3. Do you know someone who is such a perfectionist? What was his/her impact to
you?
4. Among all the barriers in managing your time effectively, would you agree that
laziness is the most common barrier to all students? Why or why not?

Take a look at the image below. What does it tells us?

Do we have the same problem as the boy has depicted in his image? This activity will
help you know where time goes and identify the time-wasters. You may be amazed at
what you learn!

Why does it difficult for me to

accomplish assignments?

I am having trouble
finishing my task.

I always have last-minute stress,

how can I avoid this?

A Life Benefits of time

Time management means staying on top of your time, life, and activities. It
shouldnt take extreme effort, but it does require discipline. The main benefit of
effective time management is that it can drastically improve the quality of your
life.

Life Benefits of Time

Learn more

When you control your time and work more efficiently, you're able to learn more and
increase your experience faster. There's a reason some students graduate earlier
than others, so imagine implementing time management throughout your entire
career. You'll not only stand out from the rest, but you'll gain experience must faster
and be able to move up in life a lot sooner.

Reduce stress

One of the main causes of stress is due to people feeling rushed. The phrase "I
have so much to do and so little time to do it" is generally spoken with frustration
which leads to stress. With good time management, you know how much time you
have, how long it will take to get your tasks done, you accomplish more, and have
more free time. This gives you more breathing room, which reduces the feeling of
being rushed, which in turn leads to less frustration and stress.

Higher quality work

We all need some free time to relax and unwind but, unfortunately, many of us don't
get much free time because we're too busy trying to keep up with our daily activities
and work load. By implementing time management skills, you are able to get more
done in a shorter period of time leading to more free time.

Creates discipline

When you practice good time management in your life, you are less likely to
procrastinate. Time management leads to higher productivity and leads to a
disciplined life.

"Hard work is often the easy work you did not do at the proper time."

benefits they can get from time management or all about time
management.
3. The person who gets the ball shall answer the question as fast
as possible, and then s/he passes the ball again to the next to him/her.
4. This process continues as time permits.
Guide Questions: (Example)
A. What result do you get from managing your time properly?
B. What time do you sleep? What benefit you get from this?
Essay Writing!!
Write an essay about everything that you have learned in managing time. You must
start your essay with a question or a statement with that expresses great feeling
about managing time. The essay must contain 3-5 paragraphs only.

Let us talk
about it!!
