Introduction:
TheBeckwithCreekOilDevelopmentProject islocatedinCalcasieuParish,LA,intheheartofthenon
pressured,oilrichHackberryEmbayment,whichextendsfromSoutheastTexastoSouthwestLouisiana.
Enormouscums madetheHackberryFormationanexcitingplayearlyon,butthe incrediblecomplexity
madetheplayverydifficulttodrillpriorto3Dseismic.Itwasoftenremarkedthattheworstthingyou
coulddointheHackberrywasmakeawellbecauseyoullgobroketryingtooffsetit.3Dseismicchanged
allthatbyrevealingthecomplexstructuresaswellasdelineatethereservoirsdirectlythroughDirect
HydrocarbonIndicators(amplitudeanomalies).Post3Dseismic,thesuccessratejumpedtremendously.

TheHackberryEmbayment wascreatedthroughcomplexgeologicalprocesses.TheHackberry,Nonion Struma&Nodosaria


ageformationsoftheMiddleFriowereinitiallylaiddownasfairlyblanket shelfsands.Duringasubsequentlowstand,the
sedimentsbecameunstablecausingtheshelftocollapse(1).TheMiddleFrioslumpedofftheshelfalongdecollement faultsin
theunderlyingVicksburgintoajumbleofrotated,graben,andhorstblocks.Erosioncontinuedforsometime,causingrounding
off atthehighedgesofsomefaultblocksandsomefillinthelow areas(2).Then,duringasubsequenthighstand the
embaymentwasfilledwiththeoverlyingHackberryShale(3),whichprovidesanexcellentsealforhydrocarbons(4).

NearbyHackberryfieldswithin3milesincludeBeckwithCreekandSoutheastLunita,whichhavenumeroussinglewellreservoirs
withoilcums from150MBOto2.2MMBO.Reservoirsoccurbothattheinterfaceofthesandswiththeunconformityaswellasin
structuraltraps(anticlines&faulttraps)belowtheunconformity.Traptypesincludeangularunconformitytraps,horstblocks
(whichmayormaynotinvolvetheunconformity),subunconformitytrapssuchasfaulttrapsandanticlines,andanoccasional
stratigraphic trap.
Thesereservoirsaretypicallysmallinarealextent(5100acres)butoftenhavethickcolumnsofhydrocarbonsaveryshort
distancefromwetwellsduetotheoftenextremedipoftheHackberrySands,oftenover25,intherotatedblocksunderthe
Hackberryunconformity.Thethicknessofthepaysandexcellent porositiesallowexcellentoilrecoveriesofover500BO/ACFTin
manycases.
Angularunconformitytrapsconsistingofthinlyseparatedsandsoftenhaveagascapinwhicheversandsintersectthe
unconformitystructureatthehighestposition.LowersandsontheUnconformitytendtonothavethegascap.Ifcompletely
separated,onewouldexpectasmallgascapatthetopofeachreservoir.Thisleadstotheconclusionthatsomemigrationofthe
gasalongtheunconformitysurfacehasoccurredovergeologictime(millionsofyears),thoughthereservoirsactseparately
throughoutthelifeoftheproduction.
