Statistic I Final in-semester Fall 2007

Section A: Attempt any SIX questions. (6X5=30)

1. In a city, traffic police analyzed that out of every 1000 accidents, 700 occur at night and
800 are due to drunk driving. Further, 500 accidents occurring at night are due to drunk
driving. What is the probability that an accident occurred during daytime is due to drunk
driving? (5)
2. From a box containing 4 Red balls and 3 Black balls, 2 balls are drawn and kept aside
without noting the color of the balls. Then one ball is drawn from the same box. What is
the probability that it will be a red ball? (5)
3. Define Bernoulli Process. Describe the main features of Binomial Distribution.(2+3)
4. A certain student takes a multiple options test. There are altogether 15 questions with 4
options each, and only one option is correct. Each question carries one mark and negative
marking is 0.5 per wrong answer. The student correctly answered 7 questions and wildly
guessed remaining 8 questions. What is the probability that she will correctly guess 4
questions? Further, what is her expected mark? (3+2)
5. An entirely self-paced training program is such that the number of days required by a
trainee to complete the program is a random variable distributed normally with mean of 44
days and standard deviation of 12 days. Find out the probability that a trainee will finish
the program in 33 to 42 days (5)

In a normal distribution with mean 375 and standard deviation 48, how large a sample
must be taken so that the probability will be at least 0.95 that the sample mean falls
between 370 and 380? (5)

Section B: Attempt any THREE questions. (3x10=30)

a) Find the arithmetic mean from this data. (3)
b) Construct a frequency distribution taking 5 years width and calculate arithmetic mean from
the grouped data. (4)
c) Explain with reason which answer is more accurate?(3)

9. One of the major measures of the quality of service provided by any organization is the speed
with which it responds to customer complaints. A large family held department store selling
furniture and flooring including carpeting had undergone a major expansion in the past several

years. During a recent year there were 50 complaints concerning carpeting installation. The
following data represent the number of days between the receipt of the complaint and the
resolution of the complaint.

10. The Vice president (VP) for research and development of a large chemical and fiber
manufacturing company believes that the firm's annual profits depend on the amount spent
on R&D. The new chief executive officer (CEO) does not agree and has asked for
evidence. Here are the data for last 6 years:

a) Calculate the regression line. What inference can you get from the regression
coefficient? (5)
b) If the firm is going to spend 8.5 million dollars in the year 2004, what will be the
company's profit? (2)
c) By calculating coefficient of determination, explain who (VP or CEO) is correct? (3)
11. a) In a sample of 20 observations on height of 20 students, the mean height is known to be
160 cms. It is further known that the sum of squares of individual heights was 513230
(cm)2, is it possible to calculate the variance of heights ? If your answer is "YES" ,calculate
the variance. If your answer is "NO" then state what more information you require to
calculate the variance. (5)
b) In the following two datasets, indicate, giving reasons, which dataset would have more
variation. (5)
Dataset 1 : Age of mothers of all BBA students in colleges affiliated of Kathmandu
University.
Dataset 2: Age of fathers of the same.
