Textbook (required) Brown & Churchill, Complex Variables and Applications, Ninth Edition
Course overview This course illustrates the basic theory of analytic/holomorphic functions and some its
classical applications. By completing the course the student should possess a good grasp on complex
variable calculus techniques, and get a glimpse of the importance of complex variable theory to other
areas of Mathematics and to applications. We shall cover the first seven chapters of the textbook. For
more details, see the course plan below.
Assessment is based on eleven homework assignments, two midterms, and a final exam (more
information on grading below). Late homework will not be accepted and there will be no make-up
exams, so write down immediately the following dates:
First in-class exam Friday, September 25;
Second in-class exam Friday, October 30;
Final exam Saturday, December 12, 7:00-10:00 pm.
Prerequisites The prerequisite is M427K or M427L with a grade of at least C.
Attendance policy You are strongly suggested to be present to all in-class activities. Attendance is not
used in determining the course grade.
Class code Class lenght is 50 minutes, starting on the hour. In order to make maximum profit on inclass activities, we are all required to arrive in class on time and to wait the end of the class before

lectures or other in-class activities.

Grading policy Homework will count for 20% of the final grade (10 points for each assignment). Each
mid-term will count for 20% of the final grade (110 points for each midterm). The final will count for
40% of the final grade (220 points). Your total score will be expressed in the scale 0-550. Your final
