Oneofmygraduateschoolprofessors,ErhanCinlar,usedtogivethefollowinganalogyto
explaintheintuitivedifferencebetweentheLebesgueintegralandtheRiemannintegral.
Supposeyouhaveapileofcoinsofdifferentdenominations,andyouwanttoknowhowmuch
moneyyouhave.TheRiemannintegralislikepickingupthecoins,onebyone,andadding
thedenominationofeachtoarunningtotal.TheLebesgueintegralislikesortingthecoinsby
denominationfirst,andthengettingthetotalbymultiplyingeachdenominationbyhowmany
youhaveofthatdenominationandthenaddingupthosenumbers.Themethodsaredifferent,
butyouobtainthesameresultbyeithermethod.
Inthesameway,whenboththeRiemannintegralandtheLebesgueintegralaredefined,they
givethesamevalue.Asothershavesaid,though,therearefunctionsforwhichtheLebesgue
integralisdefinedbuttheRiemannintegralisnot,andsointhatsensetheLebesgueintegralis
