Philosophy of Social Change
Introduction
Social change is considered as a structural transformation of social, political and economic
systems as well as institutions to create an equitable and just society. Besides, it is well thoughtout a universal occurrence because it occurs in every society (Coser 200). Technically, social
change is a modification in the social order of society or a social group. Change is unavoidable,
and it takes place in all spheres. The term Social Change is used to define and explain
variations in or medication of any nature of the social process, social patterns or social
organization. Great thinkers of old times, as well as those of the current age, induce a social
change in different times. This paper will discuss the philosophy of social change (Cushman
211).
Definition of Social Change
Social change is a basic terminology that must be assigned further context so that its meaning
could be understood. It may refer to the concept of socio-cultural evolution or social progress
(Cushman 212). Besides, it is the philosophical idea that the community or the society is
changing forward by evolutionary and dialectical means. It may also refer to a paradigmatic
change is the socio-economic structure; a change away from feudalism to capitalism. On the
other hand, it may refer to a social revolution or civil movement. Therefore, I consider that social
change may be motivated by cultural, religious and scientific forces.

An African Example of Social Change Philosophy
In the African Tradition, it is easy to find discussions and many scholars as we look into the
historical perspective and the diversity of thoughts in literature. Previous and current literature
denotes various concepts for social change (Garonna, Paolo and Umberto 50). There exist
various discussions such as those by Carl Max that supports this respect. But the problem with
these scholars is that they try to drag the society towards their basic aims rather than the one
social change needs (Schatzki 10).
If the African situation is observed, it is easy to find diverse ideologies with different aims and
interest as well as its effects on social security and national integrity (Schatzki 11). Africa has
had many reformers from time in memorial such as the scholastic period to technological
movements that exist presently. Some of the social change ideologies or philosophies have been
from the religious realm and others from an intellectual front, but the reality points out that there
is a need for a political front.
Global example of Philosophy of Social Change
When discussions from political parties about former President Bush of the United States,
Mandela of South Africa, Gandhi of India among others are considered, we get to understand
that social change is valid however, it becomes vain when their practical character is viewed
from day to day disclosures such as newspapers (Coser 205). The current world has become a
global village as a result of information technology (IT). The worlds intellectuals are somehow
infant as they are not using readily available skills to think something better (Schatzki 13). They
feel at ease to get discussions in seminars and workshops yet they produce nothing social
substantial. Therefore, from an African perspective, there is a need for a universal and common

integrated philosophy to guide the entire social change process to suit the one denoted in the
global village arena.
I consider that individual cultures or societies have their doctrine, which cannot be replaced by
another culture or societies thoughts. But when the two interact with that of the international
surface they accept the change or integral practice and theory. How many scholars become
national heroes on social change philosophies for youth and new generation? This is a matter of
thinking.
Previous Literature
In an academic life, students struggle with various questions about their lives. Reports shared by
Higher Education perform its duties well, but the problem lies in the implementation of the same
(Schatzki 14). It's integral philosophy constitutes multiple concerns promoting intellectual and
social values. Based on the above facts, the current social setting or society must be able to cover
the human social condition and the totality of human personality. However, for this to be
possible, theories of social change has to come to play (Garonna, Paolo and Umberto 53).
To clearly explain the philosophy of social change, there is need to define the intersection of the
philosophy of Knowledge of society. It shows how questions are epistemological; this is how
secure knowledge is shared by social science (Cushman 214). In addition, methodological; what
the methods of inquiry as best suited to the study of society and ontological; the assumptions we
need to explain the nature of the social village in order to undertake social research. With respect
to the above three elements about the philosophy of social change, it is clear that philosophers
can contribute to development of theories and perspective that add value to social changes as
well as it process (Coser 201).

Another area in the society whereby social philosophy is relevant is normative social philosophy.
This is the theory of well-being, justice, and liberalism. With this on board, philosophers can
organize values, ethical theories and other facts that add up to human social arrangements
(Garonna, Paolo and Umberto 53). Here, it is evident that social philosophers can illuminate
social questions about the change. It is clear that philosophy can help in the understanding of
social dilemma. I consider that there is a need to undertake further study on the philosophy of
social change.
Conclusion
In addition to the fairly examples that explain the philosophy of social change, there seems to be
another dimension of intersection between philosophy and social systems. This is historical and
empirical informed study of social metaphysics. I can conclude that social change starts with bits
of knowledge concerning aspects of the social world. The philosophy of change is all about the
reality that exist in our mind and can change the current social systems to suit the needs of the
great global village.
