Case study questions about WIPRO


1. What were the various green initiatives undertaken by Wipro?
Wipro tries to scale down the energy consumption at its datacenter which was done by
optimized the space at the center due to the increasing number of server. In order to
reduce their cost, they come up with blade servers and virtualization with re-architected
the datacenter. Secondly, e-waste management becomes one of the services for the client.
Company tries to control the pollution from old computer equipment by announcing
e-waste to all clients and collecting dump systems to send to vendors in order to dispose.
Then Wipro becomes the first company that presents eco-friendly by targeting on
reducing e-waste in the environment. They also introduce Green Ware which all new PCs
need to be free of hazard material. Moreover, the company also gets its manufacturing
facilities certified under ISO14001 which concentrate on environmental. The company
also conducted the E-waste management program for its customer by disposing the ewaste at the facility that certified by Pollution Control Board. Lastly, Eco Eye were
introduced for increasing long lasting ecological in operation for advance energy
efficiency for business ecosystems.
2. What were some of the challenges faced by Wipro? What benefits did Wipro reap from green
computing?
There are several challenges for Wipro. First, financial strain, company needs to spend
huge amount on research of new technology in order to reduce pollution to the
environment and re-architected for new datacenter. Second is the restriction of using six
hazardous materials in producing both electronic and electrical equipment. As we know
computer parts are made or contain some chemical that is hardly disposed and also
dangerous to environment.
Benefits that Wipro will get from green computing are;

Save more energy power

Wipro develops carbon accounting tool Wipro Ltd has developed a carbon accounting tool. Called Hara (green in
Hindi), the tool helps companies measure, manage, monitor and monetise their carbon dioxide emissions from global
operations. We are planning to sell the carbon accounting tool as a product, said Mr Brij Sethi, Vice-President and
Evangelist of Eco Eye, Wipros corporate wide green initiative. The company is exploring options to offer the tool on a
SaaS .
