GenStat for Windows, Twelfth Edition

This document explains what happens during the installation process and
includes suggestions for solving common problems.
GenStat is supplied on CD-ROM as an InstallShield v10.5 package. This makes
use of Microsoft Installer v2. If necessary, InstallShield will offer to
install Microsoft components to update your system.
If either InstallShield or Microsoft Installer fail to run correctly you can
perform a manual installation, as described below.
Having installed GenStat you will need to install a license. Currently there
are two systems in operation, for individual users or for organisational
licenses using a network installation. Whilst you are making arrangements with
VSN or your distributor for the chosen type of license you can run GenStat
under a demo license. Please see the section below for full details.
1. The installation process.
Setup.exe first checks to see what version of Windows you have. It should be
compatible with versions from Windows 2000 through to Windows Vista.
Setup then checks for Microsoft Installer v2. If this is not present on your sys
tem
Setup will offer to install it for you, using files supplied on the GenStat CD-R
OM.
If you do not wish to install Microsoft Installer v2 you can instead perform a m
anual
installation (section 2.).
The GenStat files are then copied into a folder named Gen12ed. By default, this
will
be located in C:\Program Files, but you can override this if required. If necess
ary,
Setup may install or update the following DLLs in WINDOWS\SYSTEM32:
MFC70.DLL
MSVCRT.DLL
MSVCRT71.DLL
MSVCP60.DLL
Finally, a folder named GenStat is added to the Start menu and a GenStat 12th Ed
ition
shortcut is copied to the desktop. These both access the file GenStat.exe in the
Gen12ed\Bin folder.
Some GenStat specific file types will be registered during the installation proc
ess.
These are as follows:
*.GEN, *,GSH, *.GMF, *.GSN, *.GPI, *.GDE, *.GLK, *.GDB, *.GSV, *.BMK, *.GWB
2. Manual Installation.
If any problems arise during the installation of GenStat, in particular errors 1
603,
1607, or 1608 from Microsoft Windows Installer, the easiest solution may be to p
erform
a manual installation. This is quite simple, as follows:

(i) Locate the Gen12ed folder on the GenStat CD. This should be in the folder
"GenStat\Program Files". Copy the Gen12ed folder, and all the files and f
olders contained
within, to a suitable location on your hard drive. "C:\Program Files\Gen1
2ed" is
recommended, but other choices are allowed where more convenient.
(ii) In Windows Explorer, open the Gen12ed\Bin folder and find the file GenSta
t.exe.
You may have to change the options in Explorer so that file extensions ar
e
displayed. GenStat.exe is the main GenStat application - double-clicking
this
file will run GenStat. For convenience you should create a shortcut to Ge
nStat.exe
and move this onto the desktop. Be careful not to move GenStat.exe itself
as it
will only run correctly if it is in the Gen12ed\Bin folder.
(iii) Click the right mouse button on the Windows Start button and select prope
rties. This
should allow you to edit the Start menu, where you can create a GenStat 1
2th Edition
folder and a shortcut to Gen12ed\Bin\GenStat.exe
The only differences now from a standard InstallShield installation is that ther
e are a few file associations missing, e.g. for .gen, and .gsh files. These can
be added manually if it is a problem, using the normal windows dialog that appea
rs when you double-click a file. You need to select GenStat.exe as the applicati
on associated with these files.
3. Licensing.
The use of GenStat for Windows is controlled by a license management system. For
individual
GenStat users licenses are provided on a per-machine basis. License requests can
be generated
directly from GenStat. A license key will be sent by return email that allows us
e of GenStat
on the machine that generated the request. In the meantime, GenStat will run und
er a trial
license that is created automatically.
Other licensing deals are available for multiple users in larger institutions. T
hese
make use of the FLEXnet licensing system. The FLEXnet licensing components are s
upplied
on CD-ROM. For a Windows server (2000,XP) these are supplied as an InstallShield
v10.5 package
and for unix or linux servers these are supplied as a set of files that need to
be installed
following the instructions outlined in the file unix.txt. This file can be found
in the
FLEXnet folder on the CD-ROM.
