HISTORY OF WATER TRANSPORTATION IN

EUROPE
The Port of Rotterdam, Netherlands is the largest port in Europe and one of the busiest ports in
the world, handling some 440 million metric tons of cargo in 2013. When the associated
Europoort industrial area is included, Rotterdam is by certain measurements the world's busiest
port. Two thirds of all inland water freight shipping within the E.U., and 40% of containers, pass
through the Netherlands. Other large ports are the Port of Hamburg in Germany and the Port of
Antwerp in Belgium. They are all a part of the so-called "Northern Range".

The English Channel is one of the world's busiest seaways carrying over 400 ships per day
between Europe's North Sea and Baltic Sea ports and the rest of the world.

As well as its role in freight movement, sea transport is an important part of Europe's energy
supply. Europe is one of the world's major oil tanker discharge destinations. Energy is also
supplied to Europe by sea in the form of LNG. The South Hook LNG terminal at Milford Haven,
Wales is Europe's largest LNG terminal.

ANGLO EASTERN
History
Peter Nash established Anglo-Eastern in 1974, initially as a chartering and ship owning
organization - with Anglo-Eastern Ship Management Services being the in-house manager of the
ships. The latter was the start of the present Anglo-Eastern Group.

The process of an MBO (Management Buy Out) in 1998 and a subsequent merger with an
established UK ship manager, Denholm Ship Management in 2001, were the key factors in
establishing the present AE Group as a truly independent, global ship manager.

Currently the Anglo-Eastern Group looks after a varied fleet, crew-based training, technical
services and operating on a worldwide basis.

In May 2012, the company entered a partnership agreement with the Teekay group, assisting
them with crew management and training.

The Company Today

The Anglo-Eastern Group has quietly grown over years, establishing an operation that is known
for its service standards, emphasis on safety and long-standing employee records.

(owned by Dockwisea Dutch company) and a few general cargo and RoRo vessels. The
Company employs more than 20000 sea going crew in their ships and also more than 1000 for
their shore based jobs.

Hong Kong forms the hub of its operations, with company offices occupying more than 3 floors,
in Queens Road, Wanchai. Their other large management offices (more than 50 ships each) are
located in Singapore (tanker division) and Glasgow. Comparatively smaller offices (less than 25

LAWS AND REGULATIONS

European Union (EU) transport policy aims to ensure the smooth, efficient, safe, and free
movement of people and goods throughout the EU by means of integrated networks using all
modes of transport (road, rail, water and air). EU policy also deals with issues as wide-ranging as
climate change, passenger rights, clean fuels, and cutting customs-related red tape at ports.

Governed by Title VI (Articles 90 to 100) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU, transport is
one of the EU's most strategic common policies. Future policy will be largely based on a 2011
White Paper, comprising 40 initiatives designed to generate growth, jobs, reduce dependence on
imported oil, and cut the sector's carbon emissions by 60% by 2050.

The European Commission's objective is to protect Europe with very strict safety rules
preventing sub-standard shipping, reducing the risk of serious maritime accidents and
minimizing the environmental impact maritime transport. The Commission also works actively
against piracy and terrorism threats. Another important activity concerns the social dimension,
looking after working conditions, health and safety issues and professional qualifications of
seafarers. Finally, the Commission works for the protection of citizens as users of maritime
transport services, ensuring safe and secure conditions, looking after their rights as passengers
and examining the adequacy of the public service maritime transport connections proposed by
Member States.
The Commission has recently updated its strategic goals and recommendations for the
EU Maritime Transport Policy until 2018. Action in the area of maritime transport aims at
ensuring the long term performance of the European maritime transport system as a whole to the
benefit of all other economic sectors and of the final consumer. The Commission supports
actively the efforts of the EU Member States and of the European shipping sector offering
quality shipping services in Europe and all over the world.

Directive 2012/33/EU amending Directive 1999/32/EC - was published in the Official

Journal of the European Union on 17 November 2012, and the deadline for bringing
Member States' legislation into compliance was 18 June 2014. These talks about the
binding legal instruments (regulations, directives and decisions), non-binding instruments
(resolutions, opinions), other instruments (EU institutions internal regulations, EU action
programmes, etc.)

Directive 1999/32/EC - the sulphur content of certain liquid fuels was regulated which
placed restrictions on the marketing of diesel fuels used in road vehicles and gas oils used
for off-road transport (but excluding aviation). The provisions on fuels for road vehicles
(compression-ignition) were subsequently repealed and replaced by those in Directive
98/70/EC. The requirements concerning the sulphur content of gas oils now appear in
Directive 1999/32/EC which also addresses the sulphur content of heavy fuel oil, heating
oil and marine fuels following the incorporation into EU law of rules adopted by the
International Maritime Organization.

Europe
Economy and Transportation
Europe is highly industrialized; the largest industrial areas are found in W central Europe, England, N
Italy, Ukraine, and European Russia. Agriculture, forestry (in N Europe), and fishing (along the Atlantic
coast) are also important. Europe has a large variety of minerals; coal, iron ore, and salt are abundant. Oil
and gas are found in E Europe and beneath the North Sea. Coal is used to produce a significant, but
declining amount of Europe's electricity; in Norway and Sweden and in the Alps hydroelectric plants
supply a large percentage of the power. More than 25% of Europe's electricity is generated from nuclear
power.
The transportation system in Europe is highly developed; interconnecting rivers and canals provide
excellent inland water transportation in central and W Europe. The Channel Tunnel connects Great Britain
to France. The countries of Europe engage heavily in foreign trade, and some of the world's greatest
ports are found there. Rotterdam with the huge new Europort complex, London, Le Havre, Hamburg,
Genoa, and Marseilles are the chief ports.
