ConsidertwoFeederswiththesamemaximumdemandbutthatoccuratdifferentintervalsoftime.Whensuppliedbythesame
feeder,thedemandonsuchislessthesumofthetwodemands.Inelectricaldesign,thisconditionisknownasdiversity.
Diversityfactorisanextendedversionofdemandfactor.Itdealswithmaximumdemandofdifferentunitsatatime/Maximum
demandoftheentiresystem.
Greaterthediversityfactor,lesseristhecostofgenerationofpower.
Manydesignersprefertouseunityasthediversityfactorincalculationsforplanningconservatismbecauseofplantloadgrowth
uncertainties.Localexperiencecanjustifyusingadiversityfactorlargerthanunity,andsmallerserviceentranceconductorsand
transformerrequirementschosenaccordingly.
Thediversityfactorforallotherinstallationswillbedifferent,andwouldbebaseduponalocalevaluationoftheloadstobe
appliedatdifferentmomentsintime.Assumingittobe1.0may,onsomeoccasions,resultinasupplyfeederandequipment
ratingthatisratherlargerthanthelocalinstallationwarrants,andanoverinvestmentincableandequipmenttohandlethe
ratedloadcurrent.Itisbettertoevaluatethepatternofusageoftheloadsandcalculateanacceptablediversityfactorforeach

Diversityfactorismostlyusedfordistributionfeedersizeandtransformeraswellastodeterminethemaximumpeakloadand
diversityfactorisalwaysbasedonknowingtheprocess.Youhavetounderstandwhatwillbeonoroffatagiventimefor
differentbuildingsandthiswillsizethefeeder.Notefortypicalbuildingsdiversityfactorisalwaysone.Youhavetoestimateor
haveadatarecordstocreate24hoursloadgraphandyoucandeterminethemaximumdemandloadfornodethenyoucan
easilydeterminethefeederandtransformersize.
Thediversityfactorofafeederwouldbethesumofthemaximumdemandsoftheindividualconsumersdividedbythe

WhenusedDiversityandDemandFactorinanelectricaldesignitshouldbeappliedasfollows,thesumoftheconnectedloads
suppliedbyafeedercircuitcanbemultipliedbythedemandfactortodeterminetheloadusedtosizethecomponentsofthe
system.
