Diagnosis & Testing
Description
The control system can show and record operation anomalies which present themselves as DTCs. These DTCs are recorded in the ECM. They
can be read using the fault lamps in the cab panel or a suitably programmed scan tool. Inactive DTCs cannot be blinked out on the two cab
panel lights in the. A suitably programmed scan tool must be used to read DTCs in the ECM.
There are two types of DTCs:

Engine electronic control codes: A fault has been detected with the engine or control system.
Information codes: An event that could provide important information has occurred with the engine or control system.

Operation
All DTCs recorded will either be active (DTC is currently active on the engine) or inactive (DTC was active at some time, but is not currently
active).
Some, but not all, of the DTCs will light a lamp when they are active. There are three possible lamps that can be lit when a fault is active. The
names and colors of these lamps may vary with equipment manufacturer.

"Warning" or "Check Engine" light is yellow and indicated need to repair fault at first available opportunity.
"Stop" or "Stop Engine" light is red and indicates need to stop engine as soon as it can be safely done. Engine should remain
shutdown until fault can be repaired.
"Engine Protection" or "Maintenance" lamp will illuminate when an engine protection DTC is active. Lamp will illuminate some form of
maintenance is required. This lamp could indicate water-in-fuel filter, low crankcase oil level, low coolant level, high coolant
temperature, high intake air temperature or high oil temperature.

Accessing Diagnostic Trouble Codes


Less Diagnostic Scan Tool
If the diagnostic switch is left on or the shorting plug in, the ECM will not log some DTCs.

Turn keyswitch OFF position.


Move diagnostic switch to ON position or connect shorting plug into diagnostic connector.
If no active DTCs are recorded, both lights will come on and stay on.
If active DTCs are recorded, both lights will come on momentarily then begin to flash code of recorded faults.
DTC will flash in following sequence:
a.
Warning (yellow) light will flash.
b.
Then there will be short 1-2 second pause after which number of recorded DTC will flash in STOP (red).
c.
There will be a 1-2 second pause between each number.
d.
When number has finished flashing in red, yellow light will appear, again.
e.
Three digit code will repeat in same sequence.
Lights flash each DTC out three times before advancing to next code.
To skip to next DTC, move Idle Speed Adjust switch (if equipped) momentarily to (+) position. To go back to previous DTC,
momentarily move the Idle Speed Adjust switch (if equipped) to the (-) position.
If only one active DTC is recorded, the control system will continuously display the same DTC when either (+) or (-) switch is
depressed.

With Diagnostic Scan Tool


Turn ignition switch to the ON position and connect the "INSITE," or equivalent, diagnostic scan tool to the datalink connector.

ECM lost communication while calibrating. Proceed as follows:

Turn key OFF.
b.
Disconnect battery cables for two minutes.

Datalink cable is not connected correctly. Inspect cable connections.
INLINE (datalink) adapter is not connected to battery voltage supply. Proceed as follows:
a.
Inspect power light on INLINE adapter.
b.
If light is not illuminated, connect battery voltage to INLINE adapter.
Scan tool cartridge or software is not correct for system. Verify that suitably programmed scan tool cartridge or software is correct for
this system.
ECM is not calibrated. Calibrate ECM.

Moisture in wiring harness connectors. Dry connectors with suitable electronic components cleaner.
Ignition circuit is faulty. Inspect vehicle ignition circuit.
Battery voltage supply to ECM has been lost. Inspect battery connections, then the fuses and unswitched battery supply circuit.
ECM is not grounded correctly. Inspect battery cables and grounds.
Scan tool is faulty. Inspect scan tool.
Monitor devices are connected to datalink. Turn off or disconnect monitor devices while using suitably programmed scan tool.
Datalink circuit is faulty. Inspect datalink circuit.
Datalink is locked up. Proceed as follows:
a.
Turn off ignition switch and scan tool.
b.
Disconnect battery cables for at least two minutes.
c.
Connect battery cables, then turn on ignition switch and suitably programmed scan tool.
ECM is faulty. Replace ECM.

Warning Lamps Do Not Illuminate

Idle shutdown or PTO shutdown features are activated. Inspect time limit on idle and PTO shutdowns with a suitably programmed

Component Tests
Accelerator Position Sensor (APS)

Disconnect accelerator position sensor three-pin connector.


Install three-pin repair connector, part No. 3823255, or equivalent, into sensor.
Connect multimeter positive test lead to wire connected to three-pin repair connector pin A (five-volt supply) and negative lead to pin C
(return).
If resistance is not 2000-3000 ohms when foot pedal is released (low idle position) or depressed (full fuel position) replace APS.
Remove connector pin A multimeter probe and attach to three-pin connector pin B (signal).

When foot pedal is in released (low idle) position, resistance should be 1500-3000 ohms.
Depress foot pedal (full fuel position). Resistance should be 200-500 ohms. This resistance value must be at least 1000 ohms lower
than resistance value of 1500-3000 ohms measured in previous tests.
If resistance values are not within specification, replace APS.

Ambient Air Pressure Sensor

Connect suitably programmed scan tool vehicle datalink.


Turn ignition switch to ON position.
If ambient air pressure is less than or equal to 20.6 inches Hg and vehicle elevation is less than 10,000 feet, replace the ambient air
pressure sensor.

Ambient Air Temperature Sensor

Disconnect connector.
Measure resistance between sensor pins.
If resistance is not 1752-44,000 ohms, replace sensor.

Clutch Switch

Engage clutch and multimeter must show closed circuit.
If switch not closed, adjust clutch switch trip lever.

Depress clutch pedal and ensure witch opens. Minimum resistance: should be 100 Kohms.
Push clutch pedal down several times and ensure switch closes.
If switch remains open or closed, replace clutch switch.

Coolant Temperature Sensor


Cold Engine

Turn ignition switch to ON position.
Compare coolant temperature value with water temperature gauge.
If coolant temperature is more than water temperature or does not increase, replace sensor.

Fuel Shutoff Valve (FSOV)

Ensure shutoff valve coil is correct voltage. Coil voltage and part number are cast into coil terminal connection end.

Measure coil voltage. Measurement must be same as battery voltage.

Remove solenoid wire and measure coil resistance. Resistance on 12-volt solenoids should be 7-8 ohms, and on 24-volt solenoids,
28-32 ohms.
If resistance is not with specifications, replace coil.

Inspect wire No. 9. Foot pedal in idle position.
Measure resistance from wire No. 9 to No. 10. Minimum resistance should be 100 Kohms.
Depress foot pedal assembly and measure resistance. On separate sensor models maximum resistance should be 10 ohms. On
integrated sensor, maximum resistance should be 125 ohms.
If resistance is not with specifications, replace switch.

Injector Solenoid
The resistance value of the injector solenoid circuit is very low. The solenoid resistance is also temperature sensitive. To read an accurate
resistance value, the resistance of the multimeter must be subtracted from the total resistance of the injector solenoid circuit.

Set meter range to lowest ohm scale.
Measure resistance across two test leads to get multimeter resistance value.
