Study of Blood Group

The ABO system
There are four main blood groups defined by the ABO system:
blood group A has A antigens on the red blood cells with anti-B
antibodies in the plasma
blood group B has B antigens with anti-A antibodies in the plasma
blood group O has no antigens, but both anti-A and anti-B antibodies
in the plasma
blood group AB has both A and B antigens, but no antibodies
The Rh system
Red blood cells sometimes have another antigen, a protein known as the
RhD antigen. If this is present, your blood group is RhD positive. If it's
absent, your blood group is RhD negative. This means you can be one of
eight blood groups:
A RhD positive (A+)
A RhD negative (A-)
B RhD positive (B+)
B RhD negative (B-)
RhD positive (O+)
RhD negative (O-)
AB RhD positive (AB+)
AB RhD negative (AB-)

Blood Donation
A blood donation occurs when a person voluntarily has blood drawn and
used for transfusions and/or made into biopharmaceutical medications by a
process called fractionation Donation may be of whole blood (WB), or of
specific components directly (the latter called apheresis). Blood banks often
participate in the collection process as well as the procedures that follow it.
Importance of Blood Donation
For you, it's just a few moments out of your day but for patients in
need, it may save their life.
Despite medical and technological advances, blood cannot currently
be made. The only way of getting hold of it is via blood donations
from people who give blood.
Each donation may help up to three different people
Because each blood donation provides three different blood
components, each with its own role in treating patients, it helps up to
three different people.
Blood and its components have a limited life
The Joy of Saving Human Lives
It is such a wonderful feeling being able to help doctors save human lives.
There are no perfect substitutes for human blood. The blood you donate is
divided into various components according to the needs of patients.
Free Health Check-up
You can donate blood only if you are fit enough to do so. Before every blood
donation process, a series of health check-ups are performed on the donor

totally free of cost. This will be of great benefit to you. For example, you
will come to know of any blood pressure abnormalities. That will help
diagnose some of the indolent diseases at the early stage before they get
flared up and present with multiple medical problems.
Reduces Risk of Heart Disease
Regular blood donations help to keep the levels of iron in the body in check,
especially in males. This has shown to reduce heart disease. Though iron is
an essential element for the proper functioning of the body, excessive iron
build up can result in excessive oxidative damage.
Burns Calories
One time blood donation helps you shed 650 Kcal. This can aid you in your
body weight control measures.
Reduces the Risk of Cancer
High levels of iron have been implicated in cancer. Theoretically, donating
blood frequently will reduce the risk of cancers.

Blood Donation Criteria
General
To give blood, you must be healthy, at least 17 years old, and weigh at least 110 pounds.
Donor Information

The most needed blood types are O+, O-, AB- and B-. These blood types are
absolutely critical.

If you have a donor card (i.e., know your blood type and have given before), go to
the blood drives!

If you have one of the critical blood types but do not have a donor card, go to the
blood drives anyway!

If you have given blood in the last 56 days (8 weeks), you cannot give blood
again, even if you have one of the critical blood types.

Role of NGOS

Healthy individuals to become regular voluntary blood donors

Existing voluntary blood donors to continue to donate regularly

Converting family replacement donors to voluntary blood donors by

strengthening the blood donor education, recruitment and retention programs

In spite of the rapid and remarkable advancements in medical science today, no factory
can manufacture blood. It is only in human beings that human blood is made and
circulated. Hence, donation - rather voluntary donation is the only way of accumulating
blood at safe storage to meet emergency requirements for saving lives.
This is the greatest gift one can do for the mankind. Voluntary Blood Donors are saviors
of mankind. If someone really loves oneself and other fellow beings, the only way to
express it is to donate blood voluntarily. Donating blood means giving life to someone
and it is believed that voluntary blood donors command the highest respect for their
sacrifice.
