Each school has widely celebrated its students college acceptances a number of different
ways, using its websites, videos,
pennants, shirts, tweets and even
ceremonies such as the academic
award night some schools held.
I have to say I am extremely
pleased with our principals and
how they have celebrated their
students college acceptances,
Webb said.
Last school year was also the
best one the district has ever had
in terms of students taking AP
classes and AP tests.
However, academic tests were
not the only thing on which these
students scored highly. Last
years students also scored well
on the harassment, intimidation
and bullying assessment, being
awarded 74 out of 78 potential
points.
Each school has to provide a
self-assessment to the state for review, and once this grade is approved by the state, it has to be
posted on each school's website.

According to the Vital Signs report released by the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention
and the Food and Drug Administration, heroin use is on the rise
across the United States.
While this increase has been
noted among men, women, most
age groups and all income levels,
the greatest increase has been
spotted in those who have not historically been noted for heroin
use women, citizens with private insurance and those with
higher incomes.
Additionally, the report finds
those using heroin are also using
a number of other substances.
And with an increase in heroin
use comes an increase in heroin
overdose. Heroin-involved overdose deaths nearly doubled between 2011 and 2013. More than
8,200 people died in 2013 alone.
Heroin use is increasing at an
alarming rate in many parts of
society, driven by both the pre-
Since the introduction of Narcan kits, responses to calls regarding overdoses have been improved.
Once the officer arrives on
scene, he/she needs to quickly determine what the cause is. When
it is determined that the victim is
suffering from an opioid overdose, then the officer will administer Narcan, Lt. Stephen
Riedener of the Mount Laurel Police said. There is no doubt that
the Narcan kits carried by the police save lives. The police are generally the first emergency responders to arrive on scene, so now
overdose victims are receiving
the medication much more quickly than they did in the past.
Every officer in the Mount
Laurel Police Department received training on how to use the
Narcan kits when they first received them, and it is now part of
the training for new officers.
MLPD has used the kit nine times
since July 2014 when they were
first put in service.

shot by an unknown masked suspect who then ran off. The victim
was transported to Cooper Hospital where his wound was determined to be non-life threatening.
While searching the area, officers located two male suspects on
foot. They were identified as an
18-year-old Mt. Laurel man and a
17-year-old male from Trenton.
Investigators eventually determined that both were with the
victim in his residence. They
were handling a handgun that the
two had brought with them. The
gun discharged, striking the victim in the chest. The two fled the
residence with the gun prior to
police arrival.

I don't think the Narcan kits
cut down on heroin usage. On at
least one occasion, we administered Narcan to the same person
but on different days because
they continued to use heroin.
That person wasn't deterred by
the first overdose, Reidener said.

The district made it a point last
year to focus on communicating
the schedule and finalizing the
details to be ready to roll when
the 2015-2016 year begins on Sept.
8.
We feel there are several benefits to this new schedule, Webb
said.
Increasing instructional time
with longer periods, increasing
staff collaboration, having a common lunch and reducing academic stress are a few advancements
Webb touched on.
The district was also proud to
announce its participation in the
statewide You Got Brains competition. Fifty-nine New Jersey
schools competed in the fifth annual You Got Brains competition
sponsored by the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey.
LDTV won for the third year in
a row and the fourth year in the
last five years of the competition
with its heads up, eyes forward
message.
Distracted driving is one of the
leading causes for brain injuries.
LDTVs message has been displayed on 160 state Department of
Transportation digital message
boards.
The LRHSD is excited about its
new app that will make its debut
this year.
The creation of this app has
been a yearlong process that has
included input from various students. The app includes several
features, such as being able to
customize it to your respective
schools, receiving timely news
from your school, parents being
able to sign up for grade alerts,
parents being able to deposit
money in their childs lunch accounts and parents being able to
view the four-day rotating schedule.
This is just scratching the surface of what this app can do,
Webb said.
As of Aug. 24, there were 4,700
downloads to date, and the board
anticipates that number to rise.
